I'm Sad. Snow is scheduled for the next two days, then rain after that. I'll have to go to some large indoor gym or somthing like that to practice... Forever Alone.
1) when i throw a hammer i do all of the instructions you said...and the throw does works
but not too far distance about 20-30 yards maximum..what is the missing element that would let me hit the frisbee X5 times further like those guys at the end of the vid...?? please let me know :S
2) your really good...how long you have been playing this game?
Brodie, I just started throwing the frisbee and I have to say I love it. But it seems like when you throw this the disc is going upside down. Am I just not seeing this correctly or is this how it is supposed to happen?
Hey Brodie, my hammers are really good when i throw them without turning them over, but when i try to turn it over i feel like im trying too hard and i mess up. It's hard for me to turn a frisbee over and make it accurate. Any Tips??? Thanks
thank you brodiesmith but i still need to practice the grip cause when i flick my wrist beetween ng thumb and pointer finger hurts.....but this video helps a lot on how i should throw it right to be accurate and positions and how the frisbee should fly thank you very much....
@brodiesmith21 When I throw my hammer it curves to the right, but after that it curves to the left. I was just wondering if that is a bad thing, if it is what can I do to prevent this.
Everytime I try and do this, the frisbee always flattens out halfway through the throw and doesn't give me the curve that I want. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
so I had the hammer down at about 30 yards accurate consistent than all of a sudden i throw it and it just stays vertical to the ground the whole way and lands on the rim... what can cause this?
hey brodie....whenever i toss a hammer the frisbee scraps my first knuckle on my index finger, slowing the amount of spin on the frisbee...how do i toss the frisbee so it does not rub against my knuckle?
@mwWIInerd314159265 If I were to guess, you're probably using a Wamo or a "frisbee" which have a sharper rim. Discs, by Discraft have a more curved rim which will probably prevent the rubbing. I can always tell when I pick up a wamo... just buy a discraft :)
At my high school practice I ended a scrimmage with a game winning hammer the full length... I didn't want to seem like a douchebag but they were in a zone defense and it was the only way to get it over everyone.
question. I throw overhand with my left hand but i do backhand and forehand with my right hand.. does that matter? seems like if your playing ultimate then this isn't very good
Why don't you want to have your wrist cocked before the top of your motion? I always have it cocked when I start and it seems to work ok. What does not cocking it do to make it better?
@TomatoesNut It all comes down to the mark. If you're only throwing one throw, I'm going to shut that down and make you throw another that you're not so comfortable with. The choice of throw comes down to a number of factors, but the direction of the cut and the force of the defense are most important.
so, I'm starting to get distance on my hammer but I'm having a little problem. as the frisbee is descending, sometimes it turns over and changes direction. what's the reason for this and how can I fix it?
so, I'm starting to get distance on my hammer but I'm having a little problem. as the frisbee is descending, sometimes it turns over the way and changes directions. what's the reason for this and how can I fix it?
@Andrewcunningmusic thats known as the double helix hammer...you have to angle the disc more vertically on release to make sure it doesn't do that...but for long hammers its sometimes ok for a double helix
So, i switch hands for different types of throws..i know its bad but its just more comfortable + they are more accurate and sturdy with the accompanying hand, Backhand Righty / Flick Left / Hammer Left..i figure i should pick a hand i just dont know which one is more important to have, flick or backhand..Also, i notice you dont take a step when you hammer..is there a reason for that?
@ishue i generate all my power from my upper body...no need for me to really use my lower body...but taking a step forward will help you get more distance
Good videos. Easy to understand. But in a game there is going to be called a travel on the last throw for sure. even if it's too close to call, that motion with your leg is enough for alot of players to call it on.
Main problem I have: I always throw the hammer short of my target, even if the target is closer than the farthest distance I know that I can throw it.
Secondary problem: I can't throw it probably more than 40 yards.
@brodiesmith21 Ever have a full rotation into an S when throwing the hammer? I think it's impossible from a physics standpoint but if you have enough velocity it might be able to? I've gotten close in disc golf sometimes.
@aamidjaythreepointoh For long hammers it helps to lean away from the shoulder you are throwing it on, so you can put more arm into it. It also helps you put lower body into it. This will make it have a lower release.
My disk does some weird things when I try to throw a hammer. I'm right-handed, so when I first throw it, the disk breaks from left to right like normal, but then after a little bit it turns over and starts to break from right to left. It's also very wobbly. I know that snapping my wrist more will help with the wobbles. Will that help with making it break correctly also?
@mywomanisbig probably has to do with you not snapping your wrist and forearm enough. Really work on that snap and that will help generate spin you will need to have a great flying disc.
I've been thought to move my other leg (I'm left-handed so my left leg) backward and on the release point my arm and leg should have a somewhat straight line. I find this extremely awkward.
My current technique now is lifting the left leg in the air, bending somewhat to the right and landing the foot over to my right side. It might look a bit like throwing a javelin in terms of the position. Any +/- with those compared to your near "static" position?
@Lerkki To be honest I have seen the most different types of variations when it comes to the the lower body. So I would honestly say do what works best for you. For me thats being kind of static but using a lot of torque in my hips and core. Its an awkward motion to start with because when throwing a ball with your left hand your taught to step forward with your right foot. And in frisbee left handlers right foot is their pivot foot. So just do what comes natural and is comfortable to you.
you should do a video with a set of advanced throws to give people ideas. not as much explain how to do them, but showcase a bunch of advanced throws (e.g. thumber, staker, scoober, etc.)
@brodiesmith21 I believe it's where you grip the rim of the frisbee right-side up with thumb on the inside and index on the outside, and then use your thumb for leverage and throw it from you neck...if that makes sense. Also, a video with basic catches and trick catches would be awesome.
@brodiesmith21 im trying to find a youtube video or something that does it justice but im not having any luck. some people hold the disc like a scooby and others (like myself) hold it different. if you make a fist with your thumb inside your fingers, you put the disc between your pointer and middle finger, with the lip of the disc behind the forepart of your thumb. then to throw it you wanna bring your disc through backhand like your trying to swing a golf club at your feet. The bottom of
@brodiesmith21 of the disc should be facing away from you. aim higher than it seems you should, then release. the disc will have a back spin, and if you throw it hard with a good snap you can get the disc to turn out of it and fly to your right (if your right handed). honestly there may be another term for the throw, but i dont know. i call it a grenade. if i find time a might make a video of it and post it. let me know if you figure out the throw though.
Hey Brodie, is there any pivoting in this throw? In your video it looks like you're getting the power from the shoulder and hip rotation but is there any pivoting or stepping out for this throw? Like when your throwing right hand flick you step out with your right foot and throw it, but do you do anything like this for the hammer? It always seems like I have awkward footing when throwing this.
@AbSoluteZeWoah With the hammer you want to do what comes natural for you. So i wouldn't say there is a right and wrong way of pivoting. Feel it out and do what works best. For me I don't really move my right foot that much but it also depends on the type of hammer
@brodiesmith21 like when i throw my hammer it doesnt go out to my left and curve in, and it turns over sooner and looses alot of speed. so what im asking is how to get the disk to go out to my left and curve back? thanks alot
@Prozakk08 It sounds like when your releasing the disc it isn't vertical enough. By changing that it will help from having the disc turn over. Try that and see if that helps the disc from turning over.
Now with regards to having the disc fly out to the left and curve back. That deals with my arm motion. Too hard to explain just in writing. Would you like a video on that?
@brodiesmith21 hey great vid, watched it about 3 times now, but now when im applying thoses skills my shot doesnt come out to side as much and flips over sooner and travels straight, i was wondering if u had any advice to fix that thx
Do you think it would be possible to make a video explaining how to low release forehand and backhand please! i'm working on my low releases and i'm having trouble releasing it quickly and accurately.
Can you make a video about faking from backhand to forehand? I can fake from forehand to backhand, but the other way is a lot harder. Also how can we get some florida swag?
Like your vids man. But can I look forward to a catching video? I know it sounds elementary, but I have a hard time catching difficult and fast throws. If you know any drills, practices, tips, or techniques you use for catching, it would be awesome to see them in a vid. Esp ones where you sky because I know you can catch one handed fast discs in the air. Thanks!
I know you hit the weights a lot Brodie. What muscles do you suggest strengthening to add distance to hammers, flicks, and backhands once we have our fundamentals of form down?
Hey Brodie, really appreciate all the tips on improving throwing motion. Do you think that picking up your right foot when you are throwing your hammer is a problem that I should try to fix or should I keep doing it the same way?
@havone2 With the hammer I see some people pick up their right foot and some people keep it down. Do whatever comes natural because after playing around with it, for me it didn't change any part of my throw.
do you have notes about preventing the double helix hammer? most of my distance hammers (which i rarely throw because they suck) end up turning over and going the other way...
@gibsonsg0425 One thing you can check to see if your doing properly is the angle of the disc on the release. For big hammers (40 yards plus) you want the disc more vertical on release. So if the disc is double helixing like you say, you may want to tweak the angle a bit and release the disc more vertically.

Like when your throwing right hand flick you step out with your right foot and throw it, but do you do anything like this for the hammer? It always seems like I have awkward footing when throwing this.
AbSoluteZeWoah 9 months ago
@AbSoluteZeWoah With the hammer you want to do what comes natural for you. So i wouldn't say there is a right and wrong way of pivoting. Feel it out and do what works best. For me I don't really move my right foot that much but it also depends on the type of hammer

@brodiesmith21 yeh a video on the disc flying out to the left and curve back would be great! thanks alot, i would appreciate it alot

@Prozakk08 will do
brodiesmith21 9 months ago
@brodiesmith21 like when i throw my hammer it doesnt go out to my left and curve in, and it turns over sooner and looses alot of speed. so what im asking is how to get the disk to go out to my left and curve back? thanks alot
Prozakk08 9 months ago
@Prozakk08 It sounds like when your releasing the disc it isn't vertical enough. By changing that it will help from having the disc turn over. Try that and see if that helps the disc from turning over.
Now with regards to having the disc fly out to the left and curve back. That deals with my arm motion. Too hard to explain just in writing. Would you like a video on that?

Out of curiousity I notice in all your videos you shake your wrist as you get ready to throw. Is there a helpful reason for this?

Do you think it would be possible to make a video explaining how to low release forehand and backhand please! i'm working on my low releases and i'm having trouble releasing it quickly and accurately.
FlawlessPlay 10 months ago
@FlawlessPlay Both great throws in your arsenal. I will add it to the list.
brodiesmith21 10 months ago
Can you make a video about faking from backhand to forehand? I can fake from forehand to backhand, but the other way is a lot harder. Also how can we get some florida swag?
bballdevil545 10 months ago
@bballdevil545 Florida Swag Competition is coming very soon. And A pivoting video is in the process of being editing.

I like the hammer highlights at the end.
mnolanporter 10 months ago
Like your vids man. But can I look forward to a catching video? I know it sounds elementary, but I have a hard time catching difficult and fast throws. If you know any drills, practices, tips, or techniques you use for catching, it would be awesome to see them in a vid. Esp ones where you sky because I know you can catch one handed fast discs in the air. Thanks!

I know you hit the weights a lot Brodie. What muscles do you suggest strengthening to add distance to hammers, flicks, and backhands once we have our fundamentals of form down?
Youknowhubbard 10 months ago
@Youknowhubbard tri's, bi's chest, and back for the upper body. Also having a strong and flexible shoulder is great!

ttufan3554 10 months ago
Hey Brodie, really appreciate all the tips on improving throwing motion. Do you think that picking up your right foot when you are throwing your hammer is a problem that I should try to fix or should I keep doing it the same way?
havone2 10 months ago
@havone2 With the hammer I see some people pick up their right foot and some people keep it down. Do whatever comes natural because after playing around with it, for me it didn't change any part of my throw.
brodiesmith21 10 months ago
do you have notes about preventing the double helix hammer? most of my distance hammers (which i rarely throw because they suck) end up turning over and going the other way...
gibsonsg0425 10 months ago
@gibsonsg0425 One thing you can check to see if your doing properly is the angle of the disc on the release. For big hammers (40 yards plus) you want the disc more vertical on release. So if the disc is double helixing like you say, you may want to tweak the angle a bit and release the disc more vertically.
