I watched the Godfather Trilogy yesterday and at the end of the last one when this song played I seemed to feel the emotion of Michael as he saw for the first time the ways the life he choose can cast a cruel fate upon you. His father had better things for him but they never came, and Michael had a whole different destiny planned, but it failed as well. Great piece of music here.
@CombatArmsMaster2009 SPOILER!!! Dude I haven't even watched the Godfather movies and I wanna watch them ... luckily i didn't read your entire comment
@CombatArmsMaster2009 And THAT is why I wanna watch them with the joy of not knowing what happens beforehand... Because they are good, and spoilers ruin movies for me!!
This might just be one of the most hauntingly eulogic pieces ever written... What Id hear in my head, God forbid, should a lifelong friend of mine pass on.. "Thanks for being here".....
The intermezzo always reaches deep down and drags the emotions out of me. I saw a performance of the opera at London's Royal Albert Hall, with my wife - who is sadly no longer alive - and the memory is always tender ......
I honestly loved all three films. The end of the 3rd one was real sad, but I always had a personal idea for the 4th. Show what happens after Mary dies, like how Vincent runs the family or what Kay does with her son. But, the 3rd film puts a nice cap on the entire trilogy. This song radiates that emotion of loss, and the feeling of failure he has about himself at the end. Like his father said to him before he died, Vito had better things for Michael, and Michael had better things for his kids.
Reminds me of how well this was used in Raging Bull. And how horribly--horribly!--it was used in Godfather III (that stupid montage then cutting away to Pacino dying years later; stupid!; it expects us to care about the death of Sofia Coppola's character, but she's awful in it, and we don't care about her romance with Andy Garcia, because he's also so fucking awful in that film). That sentence ran away from me. Quite a piece of music. Quite indeed.
Mimameior: simply breathtakingly beautiful; gorgeous pictures, and I especially appreciated your information and how it was presented. I lose my sense of self momentarily and it feels like I melt into the universe...like a transcendence of spirit. Makes me wonder about who YOU are. If I think this might be the most beautiful piece of music ever written, can you tell me what else I might search for???...my soul needs rebooting after dabbling in the temporal for way too long.
@LArcheometra Hai ragione ! I nostri "governanti" dobrebbero, attraverso queste poesie, ritrovare quella identificazione di ITALIANITA' che hanno perso da tempo, da tempo, da tempo !!! Un saluto
Fell in love with this song when I was in my 30's. It's still my favorite to this very day, and I'm almost 60. Thank you very much, milli grazzi, Don Pietro Mascagni.
I always think of my Dad when I hear this because oftentimes beautiful music brought tears to his eyes... and I was sitting next to him when this beautiful piece of music - played by a high-school orchestra - did just that......
3 people don't like this video. Three people are idiots!!!! This is beuatiful!!! Made me cry i love it so much i can't even get over it! Bravo! Bravo! Magnificent!!!!
This piece always succeeds in bringing me to tears.
So nostalgic...full of memory and emotion, like a glass of good red wine. Every orchestral swelling is felt in every ounce of one's blood. Passion, energy, and beauty like this is a gem for all generations to appreciate and enjoy.
The BBC used this in a posthumous program about Fred Dibnah's last ever chimney felling. It was played in a scene shortly after the chimney was toppled, and the aging Dibnah, who would die soon after the film was made, sat down on the resulting debris to catch his breath. Heartbreaking stuff.

" it expects us to care about the death of Sofia Coppola's character"
Actually, it expects you to care about a father's loss and wasted life. The daughters death is the culmination of the father's ironic tragedy.
I've never understood people's confusion on this point of the film.
Anyway, it's a wonderful intermezzo.
