A rainbow is God's covenant to us that he won't destroy earth with water. The rainbow is a FULL circle shaped like earth, sometimes the earth gets in the way. It's like a LOGO.
Example - If you created a basketball for instance, and you wanted people to see a LOGO wouldn't you make something similar in shape to the basketball?
The fact that a rainbow reminds me of the Earth because of it's shape gives me reason to believe why God put it in the sky! God created all things!
@MsGrantula No it's not. There is no up or down for a rainbow, but we normally only see the top half because the ground is in the way. This video was taken from a tall tower so you can see the whole thing.
If you don't believe rainbows go all the way round, go and play with a sprinkler on a sunny day!
actually all rainbows are circular-the horizon just ususally cuts off the bottom half, but from i high vantage point like a plane or something they can be seen in full (a full rainbow is actually called a glory)
@quincycar Actually a rainbow and a glory are two different things. Glories are most often seen on an airplane looking down onto a nearby cloud and is in a much tighter circle than a rainbow would be.
Rainbows are based on the observer's point of view and the position of the raindrops in question. They are a result of light bending after entering and exiting raindrops in the area we are looking, which is why the sun needs to be behind and the rain in front. On the ground, the 42 degree angle is interrupted by the ground on each side. In the air, it is not, so we see the whole circle. Its like the result of looking through a 42 degree sugar cone. Sweetness :D
@My360Xbox Rainbows are circular. If you get up high enough and the rain is in the right place, you'll see the whole thing. You can test this out with a sprinkler on a sunny day.
@WonderNoobie It's not a reflection. All rainbows are part of a circle, it's just that the ground is normally in the way, so you don't see the full circle.
Yosemitebear would FREAK OUT if he saw this. Ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod!!!!!!! WOOOHOHOOOAAAA! Its full onnnn full circle rainbow...... all the way across the harbor........... What does this mean????
@aleashasharman No it isn't. From a high viewpoint, on a sunny day and with the rain in the right place you'll always see the full circle of a rainbow. The shadow of your head will always be at the centre of the circle
Szivárvány. (Hungarian) This is called in my language "szivárvány". (pronounce of Sivarvan is: i = like word "ink", a = like in word "car", n = is soft "n", just like in word "vineyard") I wish to hear you saying this beautiful Hungarian word.
Hey, let's play, let's collect the word "rainbow" in other language too!
Doesn't count. lalalalala The shadow breaks the circle. lalalalalala
But seriously, aren't all rainbows supposed to be circular? Or was I asleep that day when my 7th grade science teacher was going over light refraction?
I read on a weather web site that all rainbows are full circle, if you see them from above. We see them from the surface, so we only see one half of the rainbow because the other half is flat and over horizon.
The rainbow itself is made by the angle which light reflects on the rear surface of raindrops. the rain acts like millions of tiny lenses which have internal reflections, this bent light is what we see as the colors. It follows that the angle we see the rainbow from is going to be limited by where the sun is and that the sun will have to be on the opposite side of the sky. Thus unless we are pretty high up we are unlikely to see a full circle as our planet will often be in the way.
Sometimes you can see one from a jet. If you can see where the shadow of the jet hits a cloud layer, you may see one around the shadow. I think you're best chance is when the jet gains altitude at takeoff, and banks. That's when I saw one. It's very cool!
Really cool, but notice that it really isn't a complete circle: it doesn't extend through the shadow of the tower the photographer is standing on, though your mind extends the arc. You can only see the bottom of a rainbow if the drops refracting the sunlight are between you and the ground, like mist from a hose. Even then, unless you jump off the ground, your own shadow must break the complete circle. It's simple physics and geometry.
dude you can't go through the edge of a rainbow. it's a refraction of light between you and raindrops. you're either completely making that up, or you just passed through where you saw the rainbow earlier.
That should be impossible. A rainbow doesn't exist as an object in space, it just looks like it does. If you move closer to the apparent location, it will move further away.
Try this with a hose spraying water and you'll see it's true.
I saw one once, on Mar 28, 2005 ~12:50 PM, ~15 miles south of Olympia Washington. I was driving north on I-5. Many people seem to believe they can only be viewed from airplanes, but I know what I saw. Other people have seen them from the ground, too. Apparently it's very rare. I can tell you, it was a life affirming, almost life changing, experience for me.
