Would it be a good idea for a mallet percussionist such as myself to jump into soprano sax? I love mallet percussion and my viola, but I think its time to move on deeper.
@legodesighnerperson Since you already know a great deal about music you will find this very helpful in learning how to play a similar, but different, instrument. I think you can do it. Best wishes.
I've been playing for several years. The tenor and soprano are quite different, but I see no problem in trying to learn both. I play them both and I love them both. I was playing either a Belmonte or Barrington sax in this video. I have a lot of mouthpieces and reeds and switch around. I have no brand or type preference--just the one that I like at that particular time. Best wishes.
How long have you been playing? I'm just starting out on tenor and I was wondering if I bought a soprano sax and played it also if it would hinder my progress. What's your set up, by the way?
parece um clarinete, sem contar essas desafinadas, principalmente aos 2:10, fico horrível cara...faz umas aulas ae depois posta um video no youtube !!!!!
THE SOPRANO SAXOPHONE AND CLARINET ARE NOTHING ALIKE... One has a "straight" bore while the other has a conical/flared out bore... They have significantly different properties of sound (NODES/ANTINODES).. Furthermore, they require different types of air/ resistance/ and philosophy...
The soprano sax has always been my favorite sax. This may be an ignorant question...but is it similar to a clarinet? I've heard it rumored for years that if you can play one, a clarinet or a sax, than you can automatically play the other. True or false?
Not automatically, but you can adapt with practice. I play alto, tenor, and soprano. I have found the alto easier to play, then the tenor, then the soprano. Best wishes.
the only difficult thing is to switch between the clarinet and a saxophone is remembering the fingerings for the notes that are in the staff because they differ a LOT and also the embouchre is a little bit more flat on a soprano saxophone than a clarinet. Otherwise, they are quite similar.
i'd suggest to change your reed. it sounds really old. also try to start with a little more tension in your lips after a couple of rests. But, your vibrato is absolutely per-fect. So keep working on your embouchure, and everything will be fine;) And purchase a new reed.
i dont know how long you have been playing, but judging by your tone and technique not too long. i dont mean to offend. you are holding the sax too much like a clarinet, hold it further out to where the mouthpiece is at a comfortable angle in your mouth.(about a foot from where it is at right now) the two most important things with soprano is that you keep your corners very firm and push fast air with your stomach...so tight stomach!
I play alto sax but also want to play other different types of saxophones too. Will it be harder to learn a smaller instrument or the bigger instrument?and how much did your soprano cost?
yo man, i play alto, soprano, and baritone. In my opinion, the two hardest to learn are the soprano and the baritone, by far. The alto and the tenor are much easier to get a good quality sound.
How easy it is to learn one of those two really depends on the person. Try both and see which one you feel more comfortable with.
i play the bari right now.. but started off playing alto. i have also played tenor and several different occassions. I wouldnt say certain ones are harder to play... they are just different
I play the baritone saxophone but want to play the soprano. I also play alto. Now i just need to know how to play tenor or soprano but I heard there was much music for soprano though. Well anyway, nice sound. Do you play anything faster though?
(Sorry comment was too big to fint in one box 1 of 2 pages) Sir i dont know if it's the recording equipment or the sax but the sound is not as smooth as it could be in the higher range it has a better tone but in the lower( which i know is harder being a fellow sax player myself) is a bit rough but in consideration that you've only been playing for 1 year you are progressing
Thank you for the suggestions. As you know, the sound comes from a multitude of interrelated conditions. My teachers are persons like you, and I appreciate any and all help. Thanks, again.
well. If you aren't already use a vandoren reed. I've been using vandorens for quite sometime now and haven't found a better reed. I believe I've had the best luck with traditionals. Continue to play, as I'm sure you've found out it's a joy to play any sax in good condition. Nothing else can touch the beautiful sound(in my humble opinion, and i play a wide variety of instruments).
i play an alto and might switch to a tenor in a couple years. it great that if you can play one saxophone, you can play all of them. the soprano has a more of a singing sound. it would be funny if, because of tony soprano, they renamed this and named the contrabass the soprano.
AWESOME job! I can't say much about that; Hey, could you guys check out my sax improv solos and leave me some critique so i can improve for the future? Thanks a bunch!
Thank you. You can do better, and I am trying to improve also. I've been playing the soprano sax for less than a year. Just love it, and do your best.
Pretty good tone, your use of vibrato could use some work, intonation on soprano is pretty hard but it sounds actually pretty dang good in this clip. I'm not sure how long you've been playing but it sounds good. I do hear some high notes you're choking on, but those are hard on soprano too. Nice job!
i like your music.
thank you.

sounds like to much reed. try using less mouth piece and cover bottom teeth with your bottom lip.

and maybe a new mouthpice, that makes a world of difference trust me

Thank You Godgunscountry!
I also have to say that the two instruments are NOTHING ALIKE! Except for the fact that they both have a wood reed!
You use a colder airstream to play clarinet while a soprano saxophone requires a warmer airstream.

this sound is not good at all, it seems like a very bad soprano

your reed sounds a bit too weak for you, try to buy harder reed, the "squeaks" will probably disapear

There's nothing wrong with people giving advice and it's good, helpful advice they aren't being nasty or vindictive.
