The upper and lower regions will, as you mention, at different points in the orbit be either further or closer by just a small fraction to that central point the ball is orbiting hence the seasons.

This diagram HAS to be right. The Sun DOES orbit a central point in the galaxy. We know this. Therefore the Earth MUST orbit as shown. The laws of physics would mean the planet would go flying out of orbit into the vast unknown if it didn't.

the video has something wrong with its orbital parameters... Earth's orbit has aphelion at 1.02 AU, perhelion at 0.98 AU, and an eccentricity of 0.0167. This means that although the orbit is indeed elliptical, it is only a very tiny bit elliptical. For all practical purposes, it can be considered circular (unless you are planning a space mission with a duration over which these parameters will change significantly... thousands of years. Any kind of years: tropical, siderial, or calendar).
