Minnie Rippleton to this day has never been surpassed in her talent vocally. To have inspired artist like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston etc, long after her death is nothing short of extraordinary. Few people know she is in the Guinness book of records. There is a common thread in the music industry that, ”You can only guess what you think, the world wants to hear.” I think the fact that she was in an interracial marriage and that being exposed during her last two albums. RIP Minnie
When she was singing "Back Down Memory Lane", my soul was crying! I lost it! You just knew it was the end for her. Her voice was one of kind... Beautiful woman.
@he2tazzy4u I know the feeling i was devistated when she passed.i would take my allowance and on saturday go to this juke joint called ms.lillies, and spend practicallly all my money in the juke box
Wow what a wonderful documentary!! Gonna look up more of her music now!! Thanks Mrs Riperton for making me further respect this life and the little things!!!
MINNIE KNEW MY AUNT ROSALEE THEY USED TO PLAY CARDS TOGETHER ALL THE TIME HER AND MY AUNT WAS REAL GOOD FRIENDS WHEN THEY WERE TEENAGERS LOL.I FEEL GOOD KNOWING THAT MINNIE HUNG OUT WITH MY FAMILY TRUE STORY MINNIE IS FROM THE CHI
@andenisa lol..trust me...Shanice is well-known...at 14 (1987) she had a very nice album...along with other follow-up albums. But then again...I guess not a lot of people know of her...only of Beyonce unfortunately...lol
@shydmples I know who she is, and I agree, she's a very talented artist. But she just didn't get any air-time, so that's why I say no one has heard of her.
@andenisa Chante Moore is another who is pretty close in range to Minnie, but also very underrated (in my opinion), many of my friends who are older than I am didn't even know she could sing in the whistle register.
Way too soon... She will always live through her music and the love of her family and fans like me... She really was a BLESSING, pure beauty and raw talent... That's how I identify her.. As Stevie said: she is a perfect angel... I'm so moved by the eternal love for her in Richard's eyes..
Thanks for this submission. Minnie was one of greatest vocal artist of all time. Her sound was pure. There are few, if any artist that can compare to her vocal range and control. Remember, she did not use studio technology to produce her unique sound....it was genuine. I doubt if we will ever again experience an artist with Minnie's talent while on planet earth. Minnie was the ninth wonder of this world.
I am only 16, and wow, she is the most powerful and beautiful woman I have ever seen and ever WILL see..... her voice, her personality was just lovely, what a gorgeous spirit !
Beautiful woman; beautiful voice. Amazing, but terribly sad tale from a great series, "Unsung". I for one will be delving deeper into her music, beyond "Loving You".
Damn! that's bad for a singer to be recognized as a "Blah!" lmao! Minnie Ripperton was beautiful, a real talent, well known and appreciated in the Chi.....man do I miss her, seems all the PERFECT ANGELS leave too early......R.I.P. Minnie Ripperton
@MyJunior1975 Cheers for the info. I realized this when I went looking to see what other artists the series covered, being from Australia hadn't heard of this series at all. But I did learn about the Clark Sisters & Melba Moore & Miss Ripperton so whoever the original audience, I'm glad I got an opportunity to hear some great music!
@MissTia1680 He asked about why there was so many Black artists that were on "Unsung", and it's primarily due to the fact that the show was on TVOne. Outside of Teena Marie, there were no White artists profiled on the show. You are aware that TVOne is a network that's owned and operated by Black people, right?
@MyJunior1975 actually tv one is owned by comcast which is owned and operated by White people. They have creative control over what is played also. Tv one is suppose to be a channel geared at the minority audience , so aside from what i said prior they are going to showcase more R&B artist.
Why are so many singers who could actually SING [as an artform] UnSUNG??? I'll refrain saying much of today's artists, but they often site these same UnSung artists as inspiration because of their talent; yet they still somehow missed most of the accolades, rewards, notariety that todays 'performers' (I refuse to say singers, because many can't sing) are reaping. Artists like Minnie were known in smaller circles, but couldn't bridge the larger charts - yet today it can be done w/ minimal talent.
and the onnes of today who are artful singers with true voice are not nearly as popular on major charts. You still have to search and 'dig' to find their music and hope they stay around long enough (after enduring lower album sales than lesser talented counterparts who have 'faddish' marketing teams) in order to really enjoy and grasp their music. I so afraid that the great singers of today will be the next UnSung artists of tomorrow....

The evil people live longer and die harder, yet beautiful souls like Minnie whither away so quickly and delicately like beautiful and fragile spring blossoms... but the essence, the scent of your spirit lingers on through time. A legacy...
Thank you Manyek for posting this. I've been looking for Minnie's Unsung for months and it's finally here! She seemed to have a wonderful, joyful spirit. I adored the love between her and her husband and children. She was a beautiful person inside and out with a beautiful voice. She was something special. R.I.P. Minnie

I was a little boy in Chicago when I heard on the radio that Ms. Riperton passed away. I remember my parents being very sad and playing her records throughout the day. I couldn't quite understand it at the time, but as I grew older I realized what a terrible loss it was. In my heart, I light a candle to the memory of an incredible human being.
Maya Rudolph is one of the most talented comics that Saturday Night Live ever had and I believe her mama would be very, very proud of her!...Miss you Minnie!
i remember the summer she died. i had just discovered her, on the radio. they played her music from dawn to dusk and then all over again. in death she lived more than any of us.
