If I talk slowly to a dutch person in Afrikaans they understand and vice versa. If you are from Amsterdam and speak that " algemeene begraafste Neiderlands"- (sorry spelling??) then the language is very different, understandable but very different. I met somebody who spoke a dialect from near the Hague area and it was just like Afrikaans.

Agreed, but if the dutch would have had more close contact with SA, this "evolution" wouldn't have happened, (also thanks toe the dutch government didn't see any future in this new land. Unlike the Brits (among many other nations) who saw a great future in the Americas. Not until 1983 was dutch completely replaced by Afrikaans in the SA laws.

What I like about Afrikaans, is that the South Africans managed to created a new language that seems based on dutch. Whereas Americans just change a few letters around............

Agreed, but if the dutch would have had more close contact with SA, this "evolution" wouldn't have happened, (also thanks toe the dutch government didn't see any future in this new land. Unlike the Brits (among many other nations) who saw a great future in the Americas. Not until 1983 was dutch completely replaced by Afrikaans in the SA laws.
