Sounds fine to me. All good singers decide which voice to sing in to best present their music. Listen to very early Sinatra, amazingly he sings with an English accent, which was in vogue at that time. Only later did he adopt his laconic casual American style.
I appreciate your point, if you listen to someone like Tom waits late70's, he's often accused of being a parody of himself or louie armstrong. Was great none the less, its a great thing he's put together and I saw him in manchester and its about more than just music, if a guy with a mohecan was playing punk and he was only 18 you wouldnt bat an eyelid, guess its just its sticks out alot more with this genre
@aridal68 no I'm not saying it's odd that he performs the part well, and had he been an actor in a film about delta blues in the 30s, there would have been nothing to say on the topic other than amazing job. It's had to articulate exactly the point I want to make, but I suppose it's all about the question of how much of oneself a singer needs to put into the performance. There's no doubt this music is what he loves and he's doing it out of his passion for the genre and not to impress-cont below
@marinahcl I agree, accent is essential to a persons essences, obviously some songs are hard to be sung without the accention which is incorporated into the songs foundations but by the by as it is sung and flows graceful its beauty either way.
(cont. from above) However he is singing in a style which came out of a specific place and time and while we are all influenced by the past, I find it odd to stick to the original style of delivery rather than evolve it into something else. None of this is a criticism of him; I'm just voicing my thoughts on the nature of influence and vintage style.
Don't we all pretend we are something that we are actually not.!? His sarcasm is way too subtle for anything ever heard! Master! And don't forget, he really likes this kind of music . Read his biography..and just enjoy the music! :)
This is great music and I love the style, but doesn't anyone find it odd the singer putting on this old crackled voice and basically pretending to be someone totally other than he is? Sure all singing is a performance, but this feels like a bit of a sham (even though he does it brilliantly). Just wondering what others' views are on this?
@IngtogBas@IngtogBas The French channel Arte tv had an interview with him a few days ago and you're right, he does actually talk that way (although with a broad Aussie accent).
I think this may be the finest song I have heard over at the old officers club. On a lazy afternoon in parody. That gal o mine she sure moves fine. Down in dat old dark Africa those natives gone all restless. It sure aint no paro - die for dems people. Not since them put up that old officers club.
i went to see C.W a few months ago and made it my mission to ask him if i could play harmonica for him, he said yes and after he finished his set he invited me to a little room backstage where we played grey goose by leadbelly. One of the best experiences of my life and he is such a nice guy
Nice song (lullaby song) from this adventurous singer.

I saw him live in the Barbican about a year ago, and he tells the funniest stories in between songs. He's really worth seeing live.
