  • "...safe in the wide open arms of hell" that's some dark stuff there..but man what a great song.

  • MikaylaOchs....you're full of shit. This song has all the melodic hallmarks of Neil Finn's work. Would you like a doctorate level explanation on why I am right and you're a gullible fool?

  • some of their darker stuff, but man was it great!

  • Hey, my friends dad wrote this song in a contest when he was a teenager. He won the contest and got money for the song, and signed the song off to crowded house

  • Woodface is certainly NOT their best album and IMHO, they have lost the magic of the 80's totally.

  • Every single song on "Woodface" is a masterpiece, but this is the greatest song they ever wrote. Do you have that person in your past you were mad for, loved and lusted for, but still knew deep down she (or he) wasn't good for you? But you couldn't stop?

  • @hostaghost they didnt write this song,

  • Unrequited (sp?) LOVE, that is....

  • THE song of my unrequited (sp?). NM87 you know it's you! LGO967

  • experience is cheap, I should've listened to the warning

  • Neil and Tim Finn-since TeAwamutu days have consistently been prolific and extraordinary songwriter/performers. Their work speaks for itself and is on a par over the decades in quality and originality with the likes of Dylan,Neil Young and Lennon+McCartney.. and still going!

  • its the slow hour of morning...i cant get any sleep....

what else is there to be said?

  • So hard to choose which Crowded House is my favorite, but if I had to; they would be:

    Into Temptation

    Fall at your feet

    Four seasons in one day

Not necessarily in that order, they are all masterpieces..

  • @34cellardoor

you forgot "world where you live"

other than that, you're spot on.

  • @knowthingman How could I forget that one, it's blasphemy, thanks for remind me :)

  • Guilty. But the cradle is soft and warm.

  • A very simple, but beautiful song. An understated classic.

  • Reminds me of all the years I fought to overcome a nasty heroin addiction, I fianally won. But I often went into that temptation.

  • Only goes to show that a song need not make you pump your fist or dance your ass off to be an amazing piece of art!!! The lyrics, arrangement, and everything about this song is pure genius and oozes Beatles to me and could easily be considered as such in craftsmanship. Thank you Neil and Crowded House...one of my faves 4 sure!

  • The best band I've heard to date. Absolutely amazing. I love all of them! America needs to learn more about this New Zealand band and Neil. This song is amazing! Thank you. Thank you Seventh! I love this! My blue dress..I know! :)

  • This song is so beautifull!!!

  • What a song.... Chlls.

  • My favorite part of this video is when he sings, "as I turned to go, you looked at me for half a second..." and looks directly into the camera... Neil Finn is not only a brilliant songwriter but a beautiful man... his wife is one lucky woman. :)

  • Another beautiful Catholics Lament. This song is drenched in Catholic imagery. You can take the boy out of the church but you can't take the guilt out of the boy.

  • These guys have been the best part of the soundtrack of my life. Its like they can see inside my head, spooky, brilliant, unforgettable.

  • best song. best band. brooke frasers a good new zealand songwriter/ singer too.

  • the sadness now is the intro Violin and the missing presence of Paul

  • Great New Zealand-Australian song. Its nice and soft but powerful.

  • They are equivalent to the Beatles, and I have no higher praise. Christ their music is beautiful. Beautiful harmonies. Beautiful chords. One day the whole world will realise just how good they are.

  • great new Zealand band, best ever. sing these guys every week in my garage on karaoke, seriously.

  • surround sound was invented for the man,s voice

  • The Worlds best songwriter.

  • They're my Beatles. Neil is the greatest songwriter in pop history.

  • These guys were fantastic and still are

  • You opened up your door , i couldn't believe my luck....

  • love the flutes, not an instrument often used in pop music :)

  • new zealands best???....he's even more than that

  • @secondsight5

It is a Mellotron, and no flutes.

  • @Tonyp68 i think that was meant to be a reply for me? Wow, have never heard of a Mellotron before, have just looked it up, very interesting! I have studied music a fair bit but never heard of it? How do you know that is a Mellotron though and not flutes? Are the strings on the Mellotron as well? They sound like they are real strings... but then again i thought that was a real flute...

  • @blondiemoo The Beatles! i do know about the Mellotron! Wow it's good the things you can remember when reminded... Thanks Tony!

  • @blondiemoo,

No thanks, yes, i meant you, sorry for the mistake.

No, the strings are real, even though the mellotron even has a stringsection on it. It is in fact a sampleplayer that uses magnetic tape, with a 8 sec length, so that can be mistaken for a real flute, but the decay sounds very artificial, and off course very

    Strawberry Fields.

The fact i know that is a mellotron are my ears, i am an audio engineer, and have a conditioned hearing.

    Grtz T.

  • @Tonyp68 thank you for sharing your knowledge! Now that I know, i can hear what you mean, it is a bit of a different sound. I will continue to listen out for it! I can definately usually catch an auto-tuned voice these days, so this can be my next thing to identify!

  • @Tonyp68 I am no audio engineer, just a simple audiophile... and of course everyone sites Strawberry Fields for use ot the Mellotron... yet it was truly Mike Pinder and the Moody Blues who utilized it to it's most haunting effect on Days of Future Passed. Though preceded by Magical Mystery Tour by almost a year, the Moody's use of the Mellotron continued throughout their "Core Seven" albums. Too often are the Moody Blues dismissed, but often by those who never truly listened... Peace.

  • @MeIancholyMan Thank you,

As you can see, i was born around that time, so my musical awareness starts after those legendary stuff.

You made me curious for the Moody Blues one (from which i only know Whiter shade... pretty well, but that may be the same as i was made from Kiss to you, their popshit!)

I will sure put my ear to it, thank you again for the tip.

(Even though i am an engineer, i am not all knowing)

    Peace.

  • @Tonyp68 I hope you mean Nights in White Satin, as "Whiter side (of pale)" is from Procol Harem.. :) Anyway.. many people would be pleasantly surprised at the music of the seven Core albums of the Moodies if all they know is Nights in White Satin and Tuesday Afternoon... enjoy! As Mike Pinder said, "Sound is the shape we hang memories on."

  • @MeIancholyMan Yep, you see! Never reaching the end...

I know and like both songs very well, but to me it is more the music of my dad's era.

My memories derive from the half seventies (about my seventh i discovered something called Rock! with cool dudes like Marc Bolan, The Sweet and Slade) up to now.

In the 80's i was your local Metalhead, but did appreciate also good quality music like this, but always disliked those producer-type mongrol music (Shit, Aidsken& waterman, and all wham gay-stuff)

  • @Tonyp68

I sat on a flute once, naked. I stood up tall and unashamed, I walked proudly out of the room with my shoulders back and making only a faint, flute, farting sound with each step. I have my pride.

  • @marksj43

    :D ,LOL you naughty Troll!

  • Very Beatle-esque. And that's the best kind of music. Arguably one of the best songs ever made.

  • One of the first songs I ever heard, along with Weather with You. Remind me of being 3 years old again...

  • @HAADOOKEN LOL... now you're making me feel old :) .

  • i can't even express into words what this song evokes in me. From beginning to end, It brings me chills all over. The lyrics are quite optimistic, but the string section gives the song a melancholic feel. It somehow blends together perfectly. I love you Crowed House. Thank you for the deep emotions conveyed in your music.

  • neil finn is one of the greatest lyrical minds ever

  • I love this group ! AWSOME SONG

  • the guilty get no sleep, in the last slow hours of morning......goosebumps..........

  • I think songwriters all over the world will admire his skill to make so many great songs.(who needs Oasis)Neil Finn, the best songwriter of this planet.I think this is his best

  • it's said best, "the guilty get no sleep..in the last slow hours of morning" Been there

  • @shelski72 oh yeah me to still it was nice and she was lovely and she still is .

  • if Neil looked at me for half a second, that's all it would take to be led into temptation! ;-) (happily married, just making some fun!)

  • I kissed the man I married for the first time to this song.

  • This song is beautiful

  • They sang this when i went to see them live! nearly 3 years ago now!, and everyone was so mellow in the audience, these guys are the best thing to come out of New Zealand ever!

  • Are those actually flutes at 3:02 or is it some kind of keyboard? No Doubt's "The Climb" uses the same sounding instrument (at the end of the song) and I've always wondering what the heck it is.

  • @spiderwithahumanhead it sounds like a Mellotron

  • @cdptw You're totally right. Thanks so much!

  • okay 1:40 lol guess i got it off

  • 1:44 "you looked at me for half a second"... why oh why does he look SO innocent when songwise he's singing about being guilty. oh that man! LOL

  • Another classic...beautiful ....very relateable..

  • my parents used to listen to crowded house stoned...lol

Great band though...I like this song

  • My wife bought me the album as a present when our only son was born in 1996. Every song gives me goosebumps as it takes me back that time for good and bad reasons.

  • This is wonderful. Thanks again Tabstarkin. First time I've heard it, finding music like this makes me regret some wasted time in my life, but I appreciate what we have technologically to find it now.

  • ''... into your wide open arms, no way to break this spell. Break this spell... don't tell''.

This song always reminds me of a time in my life that I will never forget. Haunting, brilliant song.

  • "you opened up your door, I couldn't believe my luck, you in your new blue dress, takin away my breath..."

I hear you! That part always reminds me of my girl back then, who's now my wife. One of my favorite groups ever!!!

  • Ausumn from these guys. MORE ´80´s music on my channel!!!!

  • Back in 88 or 89 as an extra project I compiled a soundtrack for the Scarlet Letter for my HS English class. This song was the main one.

  • reminds of a sad lennon song, love these guys

  • i thought he sounded a little like Lennon too, especially on the other track they did, 'Not The Girl You Think You Are'.. utter classics and just perfect easy listening material ;)

  • @t7i7n7y ... havent heard that song... ill have to give it a try now that you've inspired some curiosity!

    Thanks!

  • Neil Finn and Crowded House were the best reason for listening to pop/rock in the 90s, Heavy Lennon/ McCartney influence without being imitative. This is one of the best songs from what I feel is their best album. Temple Of Low Men

  • yes. it was an incredible album. i remember hearing it as a young musician and learning a lot about writing songs from it

  • Strange but just last night, my husband (who likes CH but is not as avid a fan as I am) heard "Something So Strong" on the radio in the car and came home saying that he'd heard a CH song that sounded a lot like John Lennon's voice!! WOW! Neil's voice has always been amazing, and to be compared to Lennon's is freaky cool. Too bad that CH didn't get the airplay in the U.S. that they should have!!

  • I also liked his previous band with his brother,,,,, Split Enz

  • @westpalmscott I agree. I was am a big fan from the Split Enz day and saw the original CH four times. This is still my favorite. When she comes and this one---perfect.

  • I have loved this hauntingly beautiful song for many years. I had never seen the video. Thanks!

  • Hey msred40 , please put some more of your stuff on . please .

  • this song bring tears to my eyes!

  • The flutes @ 3:02 always get me...

  • Notice the soaring and diving violin sounds in this song. Death by pleasure. The closest to this I can find is in 'Lark Ascending' by Ralph Vaughn Williams.

One is death by pleasure, and the other is the ascent into heaven (respectively).

  • beautious

  • you have great taste in music . The more i hear this , the more i love it and i have heard it thousands of times . thanks for listening to my simple version .

  • I wish there was still a "Neil and Tim" Finn band... This is beautiful, still.

  • The Finn Brothers played here, Dublin, about a month ago. Just so you know, keep your fingers crossed.

  • Agreed on The Finn Brothers. Still it breaks my heart seeing Paul Hester in this video. :(

  • I don't know how anyone doesn't like Crowded House.

  • @terusan13 ...It looks like 14 people found a way

  • @terusan13 most of my fellow idiot Americans. But then, you could just chalk it up to that CH was never all that big in US. I sometimes I feel like I discovered a treasure most people were never even looking for or aware of.

  • "Into temptation knowing full well the earth will rebel, Into temptation safe in the wide open arms of hell" What a brilliant lyricist and a great song.

  • there really under rated!! so good

  • perfect song

  • "No way to break this spell.."

  • Good song. Neil Finn is an awesome singer, and he's very handsome especially in black and white *sighs romantically*.

  • excellent stuff...

  • thanx spel didnt mean to be racist but i have always thought of then as aa kiwi mob?!?!

  • Gotta love the kiwis they have produced the most awsome bands in the last 30yrs

  • crowded house were 2 aussies and 1 kiwi ;)

  • Wow... The lyrics that were written in this decade... What a renaissance it was.

  • beautiful song, beautiful voice, haunting lyrics.

  • I feel this man in evert nucleus of every cell of my body. Neil is the undercurrent of every joyful event in mankind. His voice is the sweetest and the saddest thing you have ever heard, simultaneously. God Given Talent! Impossible.

  • I know how you feel...oh wait, no I don't because I'm not crazy. ;)

  • @kerryeffingyoder i totally feel you! Neil's voice has haunted me since i was 11 years old, and it has only gotten better with age (both of us, that is). his lyrics and vocals are most incredible. it's like honey mixed with vinegar, with a whole heap of love of music thrown in for good measure. "don't tell" oy, it makes me shiver to watch/hear this song. i love it!

  • I wish Neil would release a CD of nothing but his torch songs, it would be fantastic.

  • new zealands best songwriter,

  • @Litia23 One of the WORLDs best!!

  • @Litia23 wat about flight of the chonchords?? lol jk they joke too much to be as good as CH :P

  • Beautiful song.

  • And might i add, Neil's not that bad of an actor either, not referring to this video specifically but in general.

  • Holy fuck. Temple of Low Men was once called by critics "One of the biggest critical successes and commercial failures of the 1980's". Brilliant follw up to their already strong debut, Had a much darker overtone but still contained to uptempo pop gems that made them famous, but for some reason DDIO was the only song that ever caught on in the US.

  • It's their best album. And as they've never released a weak album, that is quite the accolade.

My personal favourite track from the album is "Never Be The Same", which I think is one of their most underrated tracks.

  • such a great chord sequence,so haunting.

  • Goodness, I love this song. I'm so glad I watch the Mentalist, because I don't know how else I could have found this band.

  • You are in for a real treat if you explore this bands songs....absolutely fantastic songwriting and performances. I'm truly happy for you !! Oh yeh...The Mentalist: great show. Enjoy it while it lasts because they always seem to cancel all the good ones.

  • Better late than never ;-)

  • My fav Crowded House song as well. My Kiwi hooked me on to them.

  • Hester's brush play is perfect...I heard Neil once say he was the best at Brushes...miss him..Peace.

  • Always my favourite CH song.

  • I like his suss look at 0:40 :D

  • Perfect song...brings back memories

  • Nice romantic song.. :)

  • It's actually not all that romantic lol. It's about a married man who has just cheated on his wife and is regretting doing so and goign through his own personal hell afterwards.

  • i still have a set of hessies autographed drum sticks saying LERV PAUL XXX from the enz with a bang tour final concert at thebarton theatre adelaide. rip hessie u r a legend.

  • always loved this song....

  • this song reminds me of silent hill for some reason...

  • R.I.P. Hessie. I spent some time in Elsternwick Park last week and sat for a while near where you left this world. I also suffer from depression and it terrifies me I'll get to that point. I truly hope you've found peace from those Demonds mate.

  • This song is just perfect! Love it!

  • Love the silent "don't tell" at the end.

  • He sings "don't smell" hehe

  • You in your new blue dress taking away my breath..... perfect :-D xx I love this song so much

  • New couple just found their song

  • i just wish i had neil's songwriting gift

  • i'd already be happy with one tenth of his talent

  • Yeah, but it is still a great song.

  • their music is like a balsam for any soul in pain...

  • MASTERPIECE...PERIOD.

  • Is this not the most haunting beautiful song.

  • "...Safe in the wide open arms of hell..."

Wow..extraordinary song writing skills. What a great song. AMAZING. Perfection.

  • This was my best ever song from this group, still get me thinking deep things.LOVE IT!

  • As close to perfection ever written....

  • omg i though i was the only sucker that loved this band

  • wow! Thanks for taking me back to another time another life.

  • Incredible song. Along the lines of Yesterday. How do they do it..... Chilling.

  • Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh lisin

  • Don't tell.

  • In an interview in the mid '90s, Paul Hester called this song one of the songs that still gives him a chill in his spine. What a great song

  • OMG. The ability these gents had to maintain the feeling long after the song was written. This song haunts. Such carefully crafted words. Rips my heart out of my chest and up into my throat.

  • I know the meaning of these words like I lived it right along side.

  • I have to get Temple...have 4 other albums...not this tho' I have this song on a best of. Heart skips a beat for the tone of just that note....magick. Wish I was born in NZ! Treespirit in Canada. xx

  • gewoon practig

  • Defenitely my favourite tune of them of all Times..

  • There is so many artists I listen and love their music, but Crowded House is very different. I just don't listen to CH music. I feel it inside me. It's so touching.

  • Stunning, magical, haunting, lustful, irresistible, persistant, hypnotic, decadent, theatrical, precious and exquisitly delicate... in other words - Neil Finn at his usual poetic and evocative best! This is like a painting whose power is in the spaces between. -Like a moment borrowed from a romantic classic, it is pure coveting and tension. Repleat with carefully placed breathtaking orchestral embellishments...we are all transported to the 'dream' and willingly seduced by its mystical charm :-)

  • Great song!

  • flukey006 its exactly the same for me!

my dad would play crowded house during road trips when i was realy little then my parents split up and music helped me get through it all especially crowded house this music and others is part of my life, my childhood, and a reminder of my dad who i dont see as often as i used to. there songs ive remembered my entire life even before i formally knew of crowded house ive always had the tune to certain songs stuck in my head, especially 4 seasons in one day

  • Im sorrry to hear about your parents but im happy to know that crowded house has put a part in your life. Music does that to me 2 my dads a big fan of the eagles aswell so he'd listen to them aswell beside fleetwood mac and others.

  • Beautiful song...but eventually you realize it's about adultery.

And it's still a beautiful song.

  • One of the most beautiful songs EVER written...There is just something sooo wonderful about Crowded House, that I feel so good just listening to all of their songs. The lyric content is so deep, and really makes you look into yourself... R.I.P Paul you were such a wonderful percussionist, and such a great personality, that added to the band. 3:41 to the end...BEAUTIFUL...Thank you for a song that I will never forget...

  • sounds like a christmas song bit too soft id say still good band (y)

  • ooo, one of my favorites, this and fall at your feet... but this is so so beautiful.

  • Beautiful indeed. Two great songs.

  • oh, I agree they are two of their best!!

  • my favourite crowded house song :)

  • this is such a great song, I love it:))

    Geri

  • I love crowded house my dad was into them and use to play their cds in the car on holidays and then i grew up and started to get into them. beauitful band and beautiful music
