nice dude interesting to hear the lead bit on bass i like it good stuff, trying to get a reggae version of this together, dont listen to the haters. scepticism is always the bastard child of progress (even if its your own progress).
It's a nice tune to play bass-solo on in Cmin and Gsharp-pentatonic.above the 12th fret.
When you do the lower basslines as in the second part of your clip don't forget to use the thirds and seventh of the chords from time to time. They sound melodically very good.

@didiklomberg Furthermore... When you do use the seventh/third, make sure it is the correct one. 1:41 - 1:43 is a good example. Yes you can use B as a possible note, but it almost sounds like bluegrass song when you use the major seventh in that context. When playing the bassline, it outlines the chord much better to use minor 7th (Bb). It's almost like a 'safe note' and leaves a good foundation for the soloist. Good Job though other than that :)
Great playing & tone! I just picked up a Jazz 24 V in Very Good condition (mostly surface scratches that can be easily buffed out) at my local Guitar Center's Labor Day sale, and was astounded at the build, hardware & sound quality at the price I scored it at - below $300 USD w/ Gig Bag. I may replace the preamp, but this will easily be my "travel"/"sketchy gig" 5-string (my 4-string version is a MusicMan SUB Sterling) that sounds far better than most at that price range!
@ultimabass usually, to keep your bass sounding its greatest, you would replace them every 6-months and wash the strings (just with some watcher and a cloth) once a week to keep grim out. my strings always have that new sound to them!
Enjoyed your playing. I am learning this tune at the moment and was wondering where you got the Blue Bossa background music you were playing along to. I can't seem to find any good tracks. I would really appreciate your help with this. Cheers Rob.
Most any music program you have such as Band in a Box has a means of looping a progression. You just program the progression in, and it will play, although those kinds of programs aren't free. You can usually find some oldschool track that someone else has already picked up though.
also, i'm so glad to see you're playing the bass with your thumb on the back of the neck. SO many bassists i know play with their thumb over the top like a guitar, which is the wrong way.
True say, but some playing technique methods like that guy mentioned above are better for the long run. It'll be better for your hands and you can play faster runs if you don't have your thumb on the neck.
Hmmm well lets see technically this is not the bass to Blue Bossa its just a bass playing the lead to Blue Bossa so well it sounds nice and all it isnt what the video technically is.
the second part with i think note and 5th combinations were really cool, I rather see more of that. Bass isn't much of a melody instrument. But great job
Bass has one of the most clean tones for melodies dude. And any instrument can be used for anything it is physically possible, nothing says a bass cant play melody or that a sax cant play background. Even drums can play melodies dude, expand your music knowledge :)
Well, can be. It just the way you play it. Main use in populair music is basic rhythem and laying down the basic harmony. But that doesn't mean that the instrument isn't suitable for melody. The melodypart of the instrument just isn't used that much in populair mainstream music.
Please play more styles of ongs with that bass. I have the 4 string version and mine doesnt sound anything like that. Im trying to figure out if I should scrap it or fix it.
Thanks for the post. I'm planning to buy this bass, I'd like to receive your opinion on it, in particular how is the B-string, I mean, if its volume and tone is the same of the rest of the strings or the sound performance goes down when you play the B respect to the rest.
i bought this bass to, it's a real stunner as they promised! i liKe the actieve/passive option.. this bass has so many sound available. these Seymour Duncan picKups are so great, and this bass has the option to put the stings true the body or true the bridge.
2 things that will help: Lay your thumb down on the b and e strings to mute the open string noise. Also you should probably try it at a slower tempo so it sounds more like a bossa and less country.
