Ladies and Gentlemen, the Dynmic Duo of Country Music. Buck did indeed use Don's voice as another insturment. As testament as to how pervasive their music was the Beatles requested copies of all of their albums. John Lennon in most particular loved the Bakersfield sound of this amazing pair. I was barely 3 years old when Don Rich died but I remember both of my parents crying when the found out he had died. Buck, I agree with you it is high time Don was in the Country Music hall of Fame!!
I have a shirt with Buck ond Don on it, and no one in school had a clue who they were. Not a clue. It's a shame. You know what else is a shame? Harlan Howard isnt in the HOF yet. Listen to this song! How is he not there yet?
There will never be another pair like these two, Don Rich is ( not was ) awesome and his perpetual smile makes you smile along with him, a giant in country music.
When Don Rich died in 1974, Buck went into a deep depression and started drinking heavily. It took him several years to recover from that. That could've been part of what led Buck to leave the cast of Hee-Haw in the early 80s.
Right on!Gotta have Mooney and his home made steel. When the steel player on Dwight Sings Buck recorded on the album,He stated, how hard Mooney's style was to copy!'Glad I lived thru the '50's,'60's,and 70's.
This version is seriously lacking without a pedal steel guitar. Piano is nice, but this song had some serious pedal steel playing by Ralph Mooney in it when it first came out. I think this was in Bucks "American Music" period, after JayDee Maness left him, and before Jerry Brightman started. I saw Buck live during this period, and was very disappointed when i showed up and didn't see a pedal steel guitar on stage.
@CrackerKen1 Steel or Piano, anytime Don and Buck sang together it was magical to my ears! What a duo!! I personally would love to hear piano AND Steel!!
@CrackerKen1 Any time Buck and Don played together it was magical. If I had been able to see Buck, Don and the band play live during ANY period, I wouldn't have been disappointed, no matter WHO was on the stage with them!
@CStrangeBlueticks Actually, they preferred to be compared to Mustard & Ketchup. Don hated jelly of any kind, and Buck had a severe allergy to peanuts. When not around fans, they had a routine whereby they would lock arms together and, in unison, tell people to "squirt me on his buns".
It's hard to believe that just about all these guys from the original Buckaroos are almost gone now. Willie Cantu (drummer) is the only one left. It's just sad. These were really talented and fun guys...legends in their own time.
seeing Don with a Les Paul seems so wrong. He's been so known for his telecaster that anything else just seems out of place in his amazingly talented hands.
fender started sponsoring buck don and doyle..after a time when new modles came out the guys are supposed to send back the guitars for the new modles..well they like the ones they had and didnt want to send them back ..so fender dropped them...so gibson pounced on it and sponsored them...it didnt last long don bucl and doyle went back to playing fenders ..but they didnt get new guitars and amps free any more

@silowhore I totally agree. It was one of the first things I noticed about him. It looks like the whole world could be wrong he still so happy and like there is nothing else he would rather be doing. It makes me smile too.
What talent ! Thanks for this trip back to the classics. Timeless music. As fresh today as ever. Excellent lyrics, music & harmonies. There'll never be another band as good at creating the Bakersfield sound as the Buckaroos. You can't beat the originals. Long live Don & Buck. Hope God allows 'em to play together up there.
You know, aside from Hank Williams there's really nobody better than Buck Owens and Don Rich. It broke my heart when Buck died. I've loved him my whole life, and I never got to see him live... and the worst part is I only lived 40 miles away from Bakersfield for 16 months before he died.
after Don's tragic death, I feel that Buck was never the same again, it was like he had lost the ability to play another instrument, He used Don's voice as an instrument, as an extension of himself and of the song, their harmonies were so tight, You will never see such a unselfish partnership like this again.
They were truly a duet that to this day would have remained untouchable.

This is indeed goood country. Country is a singing book, more people need to listen as they listen, there's always a real good story. RIP Don, Buck and the band who have all earned their "wings".
These two guys were the greatest! No comparison then or now. God bless them both - thank God there is so much of their music recorded. Buck and Don - yes, yes, yes!
In 1964, Fender gave Buck Owens an endorsement deal and the band gained instruments. Fender's deal with most of their artists was that they would exchange their instruments for new ones every 7 years or so. Buck refused to return the instruments given to them by Fender, so Fender stopped giving them instruments. Gibson picked up on this and in the early 70's they struck up a deal with Buck. Don received an ES-335 as well as a Les Paul Recording Model.
seosiamhmacsean -I don't think he was plugged in and didn't really bother to remember what key they recorded the song in for that TV performance. Either way he had to have drooped tuned a whole step down to play in the key of G.
Ralph played with Buck in the early years- on the first few records, and notably on the classic recording of Above and Beyond. I don't know the exact years. There is a great record called "Buck Owens sings Harlen Howard that is loaded with great Ralph Mooney steel. When Tom Brumley joined the band later, he adopted some of Mooney's style on some of the signature tunes that featured Ralph.

oh yeah Ralph is an awesome steel player. I have the RM and James Burton LP with some unbelievable pickin. Burton played a different style to Don. But with RM they sounded awesome

Buck was the leader of this band, period. This was just one of those matches made in heaven when Buck found Don Rich. They new each others moves better than they did their own. Very evident by the way their music can not be duplicated to this day. Buck was never the same after the passing of Don Rich. Don was his right hand .
By far, the best country music duo! Being from Bakersfeld, I might be a little biased though, LOL. I wonder how far Don Rich would've went with his career had he not died in that motorcycle accident. Check out the video that Don Rich's high school just recently put together, just type in Don Rich Olympia high school.
@northwindiana Arent' most of them fake, anyway? I mean aren't they city people. And the companies that produce the music, aren't they located in cities? After all, folks in cities and suburbs don't belon in America anyway. When we obey God, then he gets rid of the city people, to protect us.
@northwindiana It's been a while that you'll find nothing but pseudo-country pop and rarely rap on modern country stations. my sister listens to that shit.
They were amazing together... and put serious effort into doing quality work. They make it look easy but in reality they had standards of excellence. I LOVE the tight harmony together!
I know man, those 2 make it look easy. But easy it ain't, those 2 sound like the Lennon McCartney of Country, I cant think of many that sound that good together.
Yes, that is a fact. It happened not long after this video was shot. Friends of Buck Owens said that he never got over Don's death . . . they were great together :)
I must admit, it also took me awhile to get used to this version (without the steel guitar, telecaster, etc.) but now I dig it. Of course, Buck and Don had so much fun, it's hard not to like anything they ever did.
I stand corrected, that is Don Rich. I had forgotten how lame those Hee Haw shows were. I guess I would have have thought that Don wouldn't be part of a rendition of this song without fiddle, steel guitar, or telecaster.
That's absolutely not Don Rich. Looks like an 80s performance when Buck was between steel players. That was definitely in the Hee Haw days (after Don Rich). Don never played with Buck without a steel player. Plus he wouldn't be caught dead playing anything but a Tele.
The man playing the ''Les Paul'' Gibson is the one and only ''Dangerous'' Don Rich. There is no doubt about it. This show was taped shortly before his tragic death.
Short story, PART 1 My best buddy that I play music with, may have been the last to see Don before his accident. My buddy worked in a liquor store in our small town and it was on Highway 41. Don stopped in and bought a Root Beer, and asked how far to Morro Bay (West Coast) . My buddy told him and Don got on his motorcycle and took off. He made the 18 mile trip, but once in Morro Bay where I've read, he got on Highway 1, the accident happened.
I grew up watching Bucks' show. My dad loved his music, and watched the show too, but always said Buck was sure ugly.
I was sure surprised to read a few years ago that Buck taught Don all of that Tele work. I though Ol' Buck could barely play rhythm guitar, boy was I wrong!
It also amazes me that they ever got through a song live, they both always tried to trip the other up. They sure had fun on stage and it showed.
There will never ever ever ever be anything to replace Buck,Don,Doyle,Tom and Willie in country or any other konda music...This was country music at it's very very best..
I hope you enjoy your grandpa's music as much as the rest of the true country lovers do. country music lost a true great the day he passed. Buck never sounded the same after.
Your grandfather Don Rich, was the motivation for me to learn country music style guitar. Can't get enough of hearing him and Buck Owens. What a great partnership.
You should be proud of your grandfather! He's the reason why I'm crazy about country music and why I learned to play the guitar when I was around 10 years old. I'm the proud owner of a Telecaster. I just wish I could play half the way Don could play.
Yeah, this is the best. Apparently Don Rich liked to tune his Gibson down a full step. He's playing A fingering but Buck (and the song) are in G. And Buck actually puts more little turns into his live singing than he did on the record. Fabulous.
Don had one white 50's tele that his wife stated was his favorite. Don also had a 1964 Champagne Telecaster with checkerboard binding and a matching headstock. There was also a Silver Sparkle Telecaster with a matching headstock and plain black binding. Continuing, Don had a Red, White and Blue Tele with white binding. Don also had a Gold Tele with black binding and no matching headstock. Don also had the Les Paul recording model that you see here, along with an ES-335.
It was Bucks sound performed by Don and Buck , I take nothing from Don, I love that guy and Buck was not what he coulda been without Don , But he was not what he coulda been not just because he lost Don , but because he lost heart from losing Don.
I will love them both forever and I thank them both for doin what they did , it made the world a better place for all and Im sure they are being rewarded for that. When Buck died , he had Dons guitar next to him and a note read..."Together Again "
Don Rich was the best ever and still is , I wish he was here still, However , don't underestimate Buck , he once had a contest with Chet Atkins and out picked him by a factor of 4 when they were younger. Also Buck could perform tenor harmonies as well as he is the one who knew what he was looking for in a sound not Don. Buck was definitely the brains of the duo as far as what was to be.
LOL @ 1:36....that camera....no that one.....no maybe this one again...nope...lol. But seriously, this is country music, may Buck Owens and Don Rich both RIP. Thanks for the vid!
You are right, Don Rich was wonderful. These two guys had a special blend of voices and charisma. They are gone now but thank God we have the music forever.
Not only was Don Rich one the best tenor singers to ever draw a breath of air, he had such a wonderful stage presence and had such an entertaining interaction with Buck. You cannot watch Don without smiling. I can't imaging how Buck felt when he lost him.
this is indeed country music. todays country makes me sick, all sounds the same.those old classic bass lines are great, and don rich was an awesome picker. hes one of the reasons i picked up a guitar.my dad had nearly all of bucks albums ,i grew up on them.
Yep, Buck and Don were two of my heroes. I never got to see them together, but I did see Buck at the Crystal Palace just a couple of months before he passed away. That old man could still tear up that Telecaster.
This is REAL country msuic! I hate the way country music is going today! Whatever happened to just standing there with a guitar and singing?!?!?!? Today's country is waayyy too rockish! The only person (in my opinion) today in country music that even sounds country is Josh Turner. I'm glad that Alan Jackson and George Strait are still around! And Martina!
Actually looks like a Gibson L5S...not a les paul at all. Larger body, but thinner as well. You can catch a different version of these being played by Fareed Haque of Garaj Mahal.
Don't think its a L5S, at least not the neck and headstock, the neck has trapezoid inlays, (l5s has blocks) L5s usually have bound headstocks with the flowerpot on it, however, the low impedence pickups that he's playing suggests an early l5s circa 1973- early 1974, toggle switch is in the wrong spot though for an L5s. The body is not an L5s, besides L5s didn't come in black with impedance pickups.
That is a 1969 "Les Paul Professional"-the prototype of the famous Les Paul Recording Model (1973) It was the heaviest guitar Gibson ever made, weighing 13 pounds! (I have one) It could produce a very wide variety of sounds-from a snappy Telecaster sound to "out of phase"--quite advanced for 1969! The pickups are lo-hz stacked humbuckers, and produce a very clean sound. It's a wonderful guitar!
Rest In Peace DON RICH, We Need That Voice In Heaven........

Yes, that is a fact. It happened not long after this video was shot. Friends of Buck Owens said that he never got over Don's death . . . they were great together :)

This is so cool!! I heard this on radio and I absolutely HAD to find this =]

That IS Don Rich. KEEP LOOKING!!!!!!!!!!!!
angeleyes11966 2 years ago
Looking? Hell just close your eyes and listen. Nobody sounded like Don RIch.
grassliker 2 years ago 4
That is "Dangerous" Don Rich.
BuckarooNation 2 years ago
That's absolutely not Don Rich. Looks like an 80s performance when Buck was between steel players. That was definitely in the Hee Haw days (after Don Rich). Don never played with Buck without a steel player. Plus he wouldn't be caught dead playing anything but a Tele.
dantyack 2 years ago
That absolutely IS Don Rich. Don was featured in many Hee Haw episodes from 1974 and earlier.
SatansMama666 2 years ago
The man playing the ''Les Paul'' Gibson is the one and only ''Dangerous'' Don Rich. There is no doubt about it. This show was taped shortly before his tragic death.
vendanges3 2 years ago
Nobody in Nashville today can match Buck and Don's talent and chemistry.

This such a great tune. The only thing I miss is a steel solo. The vocal harmonies are so tight.

PART 2 My buddy called me the next day after he heard the news and to tell me Don was in the store.
The ONE night, I didn't hang out at the store with him! Shoot, I could have met Don.
We still sing some Buck tunes and plan on doing more.
bassflyer 3 years ago

Don Rich is my grandfather! My dad's name is Vance Rich.
yahgirlygirl 3 years ago 3
I hope you enjoy your grandpa's music as much as the rest of the true country lovers do. country music lost a true great the day he passed. Buck never sounded the same after.
texas759 3 years ago 4
Your granddad was one of the greatest musicians of my time. He was instrumental in defining a unique and legendary music sound.
They say Buck was never the same after his passing and I'm sure that's true.
Although I was only 6 years old when he he left this world, I will always be saddened by the circumstances and timing of his departure.
You've inherited some very special genes. Use them to brighten the world in the way that your grandfather did.
aeroshine 3 years ago 2
Your grandfather Don Rich, was the motivation for me to learn country music style guitar. Can't get enough of hearing him and Buck Owens. What a great partnership.
texastwostep 3 years ago 2
You should be proud of your grandfather! He's the reason why I'm crazy about country music and why I learned to play the guitar when I was around 10 years old. I'm the proud owner of a Telecaster. I just wish I could play half the way Don could play.
vendanges3 2 years ago
Your grandfather was fantastic! There will never be another like him, that's for sure. I watched Hee Haw just to see him and only him.
Libby1956 2 years ago 3
wicked tune, I hope somebody posts the song Sam's place!!!!!!!!!
Cashfan84 3 years ago
Yeah, this is the best. Apparently Don Rich liked to tune his Gibson down a full step. He's playing A fingering but Buck (and the song) are in G. And Buck actually puts more little turns into his live singing than he did on the record. Fabulous.

Don had a Strat, 2 teles a Gibson and a few more that i don't remember. Buck and Don were both great... there won't be any more like them.
1navyfly 3 years ago
Don had one white 50's tele that his wife stated was his favorite. Don also had a 1964 Champagne Telecaster with checkerboard binding and a matching headstock. There was also a Silver Sparkle Telecaster with a matching headstock and plain black binding. Continuing, Don had a Red, White and Blue Tele with white binding. Don also had a Gold Tele with black binding and no matching headstock. Don also had the Les Paul recording model that you see here, along with an ES-335.

Their harmonies were so tight. Rank up there with Paul McCartney and John Lennon or the Everly Brothers. They were born to sing together. Great post.

Don needs a Tele, though. :)

Those harmonies still hold up. Don and Buck were the best at those tight vocals, plus they had charisma. Fun to watch man, thanks for posting :)

Buck and Dons' harmonies were beyond beautiful. When they sang together, it was pure joy - A celebration of what music can be.
Great video!

They were both extremely talented and a tragedy to lose Don, but an inpiration to have Buck. RIP to both phenomenal country music legends
scottro72121 3 years ago 5
It was Bucks sound performed by Don and Buck , I take nothing from Don, I love that guy and Buck was not what he coulda been without Don , But he was not what he coulda been not just because he lost Don , but because he lost heart from losing Don.
I will love them both forever and I thank them both for doin what they did , it made the world a better place for all and Im sure they are being rewarded for that. When Buck died , he had Dons guitar next to him and a note read..."Together Again "
Mastahscott 3 years ago 3
Don Rich was the best ever and still is , I wish he was here still, However , don't underestimate Buck , he once had a contest with Chet Atkins and out picked him by a factor of 4 when they were younger. Also Buck could perform tenor harmonies as well as he is the one who knew what he was looking for in a sound not Don. Buck was definitely the brains of the duo as far as what was to be.
Mastahscott 3 years ago
LOL @ 1:36....that camera....no that one.....no maybe this one again...nope...lol. But seriously, this is country music, may Buck Owens and Don Rich both RIP. Thanks for the vid!

You are right, Don Rich was wonderful. These two guys had a special blend of voices and charisma. They are gone now but thank God we have the music forever.
romeodus 3 years ago 5
Not only was Don Rich one the best tenor singers to ever draw a breath of air, he had such a wonderful stage presence and had such an entertaining interaction with Buck. You cannot watch Don without smiling. I can't imaging how Buck felt when he lost him.

this is indeed country music. todays country makes me sick, all sounds the same.those old classic bass lines are great, and don rich was an awesome picker. hes one of the reasons i picked up a guitar.my dad had nearly all of bucks albums ,i grew up on them.
6stringslick 3 years ago 2
I agree! Todays "Country" has become so polluted. There is no longer any pure Country or Rock 'n' Roll for that matter.
BakersfieldBuck 3 years ago
Yep, Buck and Don were two of my heroes. I never got to see them together, but I did see Buck at the Crystal Palace just a couple of months before he passed away. That old man could still tear up that Telecaster.
rkwise 3 years ago
This is REAL country msuic! I hate the way country music is going today! Whatever happened to just standing there with a guitar and singing?!?!?!? Today's country is waayyy too rockish! The only person (in my opinion) today in country music that even sounds country is Josh Turner. I'm glad that Alan Jackson and George Strait are still around! And Martina!
fiddlefreak91 3 years ago
I wasn't born till 91, but how I wish I could have met Don! He's sooo cool! And Handsome too!
fiddlefreak91 3 years ago 3
Awesome video! The very first thing I noticed is Don Rich playing...A GIBSON LES PAUL!!! Where is his famous Fender Telecaster???
guitarpicker29 3 years ago
not real sure, but someone once told me that this was a "les paul studio" model. kinda cool
kennytheworm 3 years ago
Actually looks like a Gibson L5S...not a les paul at all. Larger body, but thinner as well. You can catch a different version of these being played by Fareed Haque of Garaj Mahal.
meestro 3 years ago
Don't think its a L5S, at least not the neck and headstock, the neck has trapezoid inlays, (l5s has blocks) L5s usually have bound headstocks with the flowerpot on it, however, the low impedence pickups that he's playing suggests an early l5s circa 1973- early 1974, toggle switch is in the wrong spot though for an L5s. The body is not an L5s, besides L5s didn't come in black with impedance pickups.
funnyman1022 3 years ago
Perhaps a Les Paul Recording model.
meestro 3 years ago
That is a 1969 "Les Paul Professional"-the prototype of the famous Les Paul Recording Model (1973) It was the heaviest guitar Gibson ever made, weighing 13 pounds! (I have one) It could produce a very wide variety of sounds-from a snappy Telecaster sound to "out of phase"--quite advanced for 1969! The pickups are lo-hz stacked humbuckers, and produce a very clean sound. It's a wonderful guitar!
