They do actually. A great deal of mutations causing evolutionary changes are now blamed on transposons or retroposons. But, that said, that also means they can induce cancers when being transpose into a proto-oncogene, or have other unwanted effects. But that's how natural selection works, only a small portion of the mutations are beneficial.
Off course, there are more simple genetic mutations like thymidine-dimers caused by UV-radiation.
