Isla St Clair was given her own series by the BBC called 'The Song and The Story'. The award winning series featured the stories behind tradional folk songs. There are some photos from the series on Isla's website.
I don't want to be a fly in the ointment but does anyone remember Isla St Clair had her own show in 1981 in which she would sing old song of long ago?
One song in particular was The Highway man - a Dick Turpin type character?
@BlakeVII I remember. Ive been looking for it on You Tube. Im not sure if its actually part of a poem. LOREENA McKENNITT sings a song with the same title. I remember Isla singing the song you are talking about. It was in a kids tv show as I remember.I must have been about 13/14. Im now 43 & it has always stuck in my head!
@stevobath That's exactly right! We would have been the same age, sitting down watching the same show at the same time. I'm glad there is someone out there that remembers.
@BlakeVII The songs a famous folk tune. Its called SOVAY. Its actually about a female highway woman, who holds up her lover! The song is available on I tunes. Islas version , sung in 'The Song & The Story' is a fantastic version. The one available by her, is a re recorded version. Thanks for the reply! :)
I'm an american by birth. Catholic by choice. Scottish by the grace of god.
There must be pipes in heaven. My soul is so tied to that land and her most spiritual people. The pipes do tie a scot to all scots who have ever or ever will live. I had a magnificant piper as my father's funeral recently. He deserved the honor.
Does anyone have the bagpipe sheet music for this tune? I am a funeral director/piper and I think that with the lyrics and real live piper it could be an amazing recessional. If anyone knows it, please help me out. Thanks....
From Malta :) I will be visiting Scotland Military tattoo this year, I will be waving a massive Maltese flag in respect of the fantastic Diplomacy between Malta and Scotland...+ cheering the Maltese Military force which will be playing :D yeeeeeeey
I remember Isla StClair on the Generation Game and was amazed when I saw her singing at a folk festival in Scarborough some years ago. She has a lovely voice.
What a beautiful song -- beautifully sung. It certainly hits the spot! I've been trying to work out the tune on my whistle, but can't quite get it. Is it know by any other name?
isla was born in grangemouth but spent most of her childhood in the north east of scotland. ( a buckie quine ) as we say locally. would love it if someone posted her singing tatties an herrin
The chorus of the song is based on an eighteenth century tune called Waly Waly, the verses were written specially. Water is Wide was also based on Waly Waly.
Whenever I get emotional, for some reason, I try to get this song played in my head. It always lifts up my spirits. Same with the song "Scottish Soldier."
My late dad was in the Kings Own Scottish Borderers during WWII and took part in the D-Day Landings.
He says that the sound of the KOSB pipers gave him and his mates heart and their fear left them. The pipes were seen by many nations, the Germans and English among them, as weapons of war.
I had goose bumps the whole song <3
