wow that was very good well done... this is one of favorit pieces and you played it amazing! the end could use some slowing down, but WOW your great thank you!!!
A violinist can play the piece with a bell. The piano either sounds a like bell, or audio enhances it. Maybe this is just the way this particular piano and pianist sounded, and there was no audio enhancement. Very nice either way.
Well, this lady won about 20 piano competitions in the last few years - and actually, this is more than enough to make a brilliant career; however, she goes on from one competiton to another -to make money playing the same pieces every time, and she is quite successful in that (except for the last year I guess when she played just as 'well' at the Rubinstein competiton and was thrown out from the first round)...
Its a tough business, there are so many mysteries that go into making a career. Sofya gulyak, certainly deserves a big career-but the "field of concertizing" has the weirdest variables and karma .....
She has enough facility for TEN concert pianists, but there is no variety in her dynamics. It's all the SAME SOUND throughout, and frankly it's just TOO FAST -- especially at the end.
I'm just wondering if you notice how bad the footage is... wait til we have professional quality footage before you make that judgment on the dynamics.
I've spent almost sixty years listening and studying piano literature -- and other forms of serious music as well. I can tell an awful lot, even from the scratchy old acoustic recordings and piano roll restorations of pre-World War One players.
This pianist has GREAT technique -- but so does everyone else performing today. I think by turning players primarily into race horses we've lost a great deal. No one plays anything but the "hard" stuff it seems.
You're quite right. I have spent the last 2 weeks watching the early rounds of the Leeds piano competition 2009. Every one of the 68 entrants has great technique, but there one or two 'artists' among them too. The judges are looking out for these people, and it gets rewarded. Wtach out for Benjamin Moser of Germany. He is superb, a real poet and thinking musician. I am typing this just to prove I said it BEFORE he gets to the final and wins. todays date, 7.9.09. the final is on 12.9.09
@Pischnaholic I agree. Us older guys know now prodigious technique is standard equipment. Seems like everything is playable. Sometimes the soul of music seems to be coated with a veneer of virtuosity. You are not "pompous", just realistic.
she is amazing, altho she is using a little more pedal then i personally feel should be used in this piece considering how it is almost entirely marked staccato .
I saw her during the Kappel Competition which she one.....she was head and shoulders above the rest....it was no contest.......the only problem is that she is not the best looking...if she looked like Olga Kern her albums would be all over Borders.....that's show business folks!
I don't quite like this kind of sound. I would like the feeling reserved a little and the sound to be mellow. She's not careful enough when dealing with some details. Anyway, it's a style.
This womanis mesmerizing. There will be alottatalk. Shed has her own ideas bewitching.she knows how to steal a show.Did she win Busoni?she is so right for Liszt!
this is a great video. Her interpretation is very similar to the one by Alexander Paley. I wonder if there is a connection between them. Timeless piece. Thanks for posting.

Well I didn't say it sounded like wood, did I?

No, something that is less than nothing-does non sequitor ring bells?

"Ever faster -- never better"
That's what contests have done to Art.

Good you are so fair-minded, though.

Murray Perahia won the Leeds about forty years ago.
I'm glad the judges there are looking for sensitivity, insight and character instead of mere virtuosity.
At the rate things have been going in the contest arena the next generation of players will exceed the speed of sound, and THEN where will we be?
I've become a devoted fan of RUPERT EGERTON-SMITH. He has a superb Gaspard here on YT. He just took a First in the Paris Concours. Unlimited talent!
I'll be looking for Moser. Thanks.

I saw her playing during a contest in 2003, she improved incredibly since then (she got the 3rd prize).
She learnt how to use the strenght she has in her hands.
Good job Sofya!
