I remember both accidents, live right outside DC. But I just have to point out that the driver of the train that crashed into the other train was..... a women.
Maj. Gen. David F. Wherley Jr., who died along with his wife and seven others in Monday's tragic crash of two Metrorail trains in Washington, D.C., was the one who ordered fighter jets over the Capitol during the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.
I guess the General will never be called to the Witness Stand if Obama had the Balls to investigate 911 and what really happened. We all know the generals GPS on cell could never let somebody in Virginia see where he was for a convieniant "accident".
esquirePIs, Scum? like the filth around my toilet that represents the truth of buildup like that in DC that starts to stink until its removed? Since you didn't/can't cairify what you don't like, how about you bite me?
Yikes, I take the Red Line every day. This accident happened about an hour before I was going to board (although I think the train was heading in the opposite direction).
My mom's friend was chilling in DC that day, &took the metro that came an hour before. She was so close to being in that crash& said the metro was running funny.
I can,t believe metro claims that they didn,t have enough money saved up to purchase new rail cars in my opinion thats BS I ride metro alot and they have way more than enough money to purchase new rail cars this story is getting fishy in my opion maybe something else happend that they are covering up that they don,t want the public to know what really happend.
I don,t buy that I live in metropolitan area and I ride metro 4 to 5 times a week metro makes ton of money daily im sure metro makes almost a million a year or close to it so this could have been prevented.
If metro makes 1 million a yr and they need Three Billion Dollars to fix it, then that means that they need 3,000 times what they make each year. That's like saying that you make $20,000 a yr in salary & you need 60 million
johnied $ 2 Most transit systems in this country have dedicated tax revenue to run their bus and rail operations. Some sort of regional tax for Washington and its suburbs is proposed periodically, but Maryland and Virginia have traditionally seen such concepts as a sneaky way for the District of Columbia to impose a commuter tax. The idea never gains traction.
Many politicians (& constituents) firmly believe that transit services (& Amtrak) should pay for themselves through fares. con't
johnie #3 It won't happen. It doesn't happen anywhere. The French and Japanese bullet trains that we all admire are heavily subsidized. So are Europe's transit systems, which serve its cities uncommonly well. On May 5, the D.C. Council passed legislation that matched language already enacted by Maryland and Virginia. That action meets conditions set by Congress last year when it authorized spending as much as $1.5 billion over 10 years to help maintain the Metro system.
P.S so since Metro did not have the money to fix it & no one gave it to them, then it could not have been prevented.
If on the other hand, Congress & D.C., VA & MD, all chips in, then it could have been repaired, thus prevented. But Metro on their own did not have the financial resources to do it. That's a fact.
Once in a lifetime? LOL! Not if the lazy drivers have their way. I just saw a video some kid took of a sleeping driver. Of course, since it is the DC area and the sleeping driver is blac "commenting has been disabled". LOL! Surprise surprise
As much as Im not wanting to entertain this comment. You must didn't read my comment.
The driver had "no" control over the train. It's set to "automatic." In automatic mode, the train is supposed to stop. Just imagine you are heading towards another train towards high speeds. You assume since it's in automatic that it's not going to collide. When you realize it gets to close, you press the emergency brake and it doesn't work. That's what happened.
If you use the word "prevented." Technically, there's a million ways of it being prevented. One is if she hadn't come to work. Some things just can't be prevented. Not in a situation like this. Most things can't be prevented until they happen. That way you diagnose exactly why it happened.
This has never happen before. Now they say, "okay, what can we do to prevent the computers from malfunctioning. Maybe when can test them monthly." Then they research on what they can do in the future.
this is so sad, also scary. i am sopossed to take a train to DC soon. i wish more details will come out---my heart goes out to family and friends effected by this
I was already down when I heard the news, but I was even sadder when I saw that one of the victims was someone I went to elementary and middle school with. R.I.P. LaVonda King. :(
No, it was a mechanical system failure. The evidence shows the driver repeatedly tried to break. The system would not switch out of "automatic." control. Virtually every accident experience on DC Metro Rail occurred with cars purchased during the 1970's. Although Metro is working to replace these cars, I say they need to reduce operations and take these old cars out of service. It is reported that the driver of this train was highly experience and an excellent employee. She was not texting.
On the contrary; she was relatively inexperienced. She only became an operator in March '09. But yes, Debbie Hersman said it appeared that the emergency break button was pressed and it appeared that way from observing the rotors on the striking train. The operator did what she could. The Rohr cars need to be phased out, but Metro can't afford it. The new Alstom 7000 series won't go into service until 2011-2012.
Metro keeps saying what they can't afford. Can they afford all the lawsuit payments they're going to have to make? I understand transportation costs as I'm a recent retired transportation manager. However, Metro is in a unique situation where they can claim hardship and request "government funding" and support for the additional security needed within this system based on the 9/11 occurance. Tell Fenty to use his friendship with Obama for something other then chili dog dates & basketball games
I jumped for joy at news of the crash air france flight 447. I love watching the plane sink to its watery grave. I enjoy hearing the passengers screaming for help. The sound of drowning passengers gasping for air is music to my ear. The bottom of atlantic ocean is an awesome place to sleep on. The moment the jet broke up in midair must have been a kodak moment. I'm disappointed that the death toll is so low. A bunch of bodies floating on the atlantic ocean would've been an awesome sight.
I used to ride the Red Line to work everyday too, but I retired May ist. However I only rode to Rhode Island Ave. I was so saddened to hear about this accident. Metro needs to remove all of those old cars purchased in the 70's out of service period. It's my understand that this train was 2 months passed due on it's maintainence. Heads will roll, and they need to as it's my understanding this is not the first time safety mechanisms failed to stop a car in motion. My prayers are with the families
I got off at the fort totten station just a hour before all this happend I ride metro atleast twice a week cause I live in maryland this is some scary stuff.
One train was stopped at a station when the second train hit the stopped train. The operator of the moving train was killed according to the fox 5 news.
My father lives in Washington D.C. and he rides the red line, but today he left early and just missed he accident. I thank my lucky star that he wasn't on this train when this happened. I feel so bad for the families that lost their loved ones because of a faulty system, which should have been overlooked. My father said that there is always a train every 15 minutes and that one time he was riding a train that had to stop because of a train ahead of them broke down. : | hmm...
Well, they don't know if the accident was a result of human error or mechanical error. I'm leaning towards mechanical. How could the driver not see an idle train? Why didn't ATC kick in to stop the train from continuing? Metro's on shit street right now.
Do you people understand that at less 4 people have dead that they will not be going home to be with thier LOVED ones These trains needs on the East coast of the USA needs a Major up-dated over Hual in 33 yrs FROM Bettaford, ME. to Miami, FL. It is the greed of four companies in the southern part of the Rail system that will not up grade the system because the cargo freight would have to close down for a week to 10 days that was told to me in the 1980s
Get real, how was Obama supposed to know that these trains were going to collide? Obama seriously has a lot on his plate and is trying his best. Give him a break.
To Geeeeky: now I never blamed anyone for natural causes such as Katrina, however this accident whether an accident, or someone that just wasn't doing their job, was just horrible. To zeroskater1080: Yes Obama does need to start worrying about our problems and fix them instead of what's going on in Iran, North Korea or other countries. We have many issues in our own countries that should have filled "his" plate up. No offense to anyone who is reading this. Its just that we really need to change.
Notice how the death toll was at 9 then backed down to 7? maybe they wanted to hide the deaths of the General and His Wife "for NATIONAL SECURITY" but it was too late, it already got out. Nothing worse than covering up for a cover up of a cover up of 911. Just what "Covert Ops" happens everyday in the U.S. thanks to the spy agencies covering their Butts?

This is a once in a lifetime type occurence.
Nothing in this world - NOTHING in this world can be prevented 100% of the time.
The cause was "COMPUTER." Even a computer is not pefect.
Money has nothing to do with this incident. Sometimes it's hard to diagnose a situation of prevent it from happening until it has actually happened.

Okay. Im confused.
1. You said "Lazy Driver." When you sleep at night for 8 hours, that means you're lazy?
I didn't know lazy + sleepy was the same thing.
If people could control sleep, they wouldn't fall alseep behind the wheel.
I didn't know that meant LAZY. While being lazy you're also resting. Being sleepy is the lack or rest.
