I know you're new to this game, but COME ON! This is basic stuff, dude! FPS games replace your weapon with the one you just grabbed, most RPGs replace your weapon with better ones, this is BOTH so your guns will be auto-replaced quite often.

Actually, he was holding it 2 seconds earlier, when he "checked" if his weapons were switched. But that's semantics. He really should have known he had a new gun by it looking completely different and him having gotten it and ammo from a gun stash, that being part of the quest, which he never really read in the first place.
