yeah he always could play at least basic cords- may be not as well as he does now- he would not be able to right the lyrics he did without being able to play at lease a little. Mind you the first three tracks he wrote Alive, once and Footsteps had the music recorded before he but lyrics to them (whilst surfing- try and find info on the massman triology cause all these songs are related (alive then once then footsteps i think)
