  • Hey Scotty,

Would this :oil all over the spark plugs" have anything to do with why my car wont crank or click when i turn the key in my ignition? I replaced my starter brand new but my car still doesn't do anything when i turn the key. I can hear something like a my wind shield wiper engine turns on or something but thats about it. Will you please help me with any ideas why my car is acting this way.

Daewoo Lanos 99 4 cylinder of course. Thanks in advance!

  • @maxazillion83 yes, it can,. ALWAYS fix things that are obvious to the eye first, then pray that's the only problem.

  • Hi again Scotty, that looks like a camry 97-2002 engine? i had one of those, when you screwed the valve cover back on, do you need to torque it or can i just do what you did ie use abreaker bar and get it as tight as i can? (i think thats what you did?) thanks!

  • @mohtashim78 yes, I just get em nice and snug by feel. haven't broken one yet, and they don't leak when I'm done.

  • u help alot

  • i heard that oil on the spark plugs could lead to smoking out of the exhaust. true?

  • @zachcooley yes, if the oil is on the burning end.

  • so if you have oil on your sparkplugs, could it be why your car isn't starting? because mine turns over but it won't start, there's oil on the sparkplugs but i reallt don't know if that's the only problem? i really need help! i live in a small town and i don't know much people, my family lives far away...

  • @sweetcheekslovee yes, it can short out the ignition system.

  • Can you reuse those plugs ??? if they were recently changed ?

    thanks

  • @fazzal11 sure, just clean the oil off em with carb cleaner spray and let em dry 10 minutes.

  • Also I didn't have enough room in the last post,

but I wanted to say, Thanks for the great videos.

Keep up the good work !!

  • I've found a trick to get the plug tubes out on these

"S" engines. I take to of the nuts that hold the valve cover down, and put one

upside down on the tube, and the other right side up on the tube.

next I use my 30mm socket on the top, and an adjustable wrench on the bottom one,

and lock them together. Then I use my 30 mm socket to back them out.

I then reinstall with new rtv, and take the nuts off in the same manner.

Works everytime, and a great alernative to crushing them with a pipe wrench.

  • What about removing the plug tubes, and adding fresh rtv to the bottom of the threads of the plug tubes, where these 5S-FE's always leak from ?

  • @justinsvidz IF you can get em out, many times they won't budge.

  • don't freak out...thats a good one....already did freak out---great video!!!

  • teanks men you ar super

  • how wats wrong if your spark plugs dont have oil all on them but only on the part that have threads what type of problem is that please let me know thanks .....

  • @YungStar490 that means the engine is wearing out inside, either valve seals or piston rings.

  • Haha your funny! :)

Question, not sure if you know this one

I have 97 Yamaha yz 125 an I keep fouling plugs, they are wet and black? Filter is clean, carb is clean... So what do I do??? My gas:oil ratio is good, gas is good, do I have a too rich fuel: air mixture?

  • @ShortyzProductionz Yes, carburetor is messed up, try a complete tear down and clean, soaking overnight in cleaner

  • @ShortyzProductionz try riding a little harder, 2-strokes will foul out the plugs if you dont run them hard enough

  • hi scotty i enjoy watching your videos ive used them in the past.my question is i have a 1975 monte carlo that continues to get gas on the spark plugs and, i've ran out of ideas to fix my problem so if u know could you tell me thanks

  • @moxxccc1 it's flooding out, often leaking fuel injectors or leaking fuel pressure regulator, check that first.

  • My 97 ranger has what seems like gasoline on the spark plug for cylinder 1, but only on the threaded side. What would be the cause of that?

  • @camaroXpharaoh leaking fuel injectors or blowing head gasket on that cylinder are the two main reasons

  • have scotty i have a 2000 jeep the headlights went out. both of the low beams at the same time. i change the bulbs, the light switch on das and the high low switch on colunm. the fuses are good. do you think i might have got a bad new switch or something else is wrong? the parking lights come on and high beams work just no low beams and im tired of driving around with my high beams lol

  • Excelent Video! One of the wires of my Lancer melt around the spark plug, is it a bad thing? I thinking about to replace the engine cos i have a bad feeling about mine right now! Only two of the spark plugs were totaly covered on oil, in one of those the piece of plastic that snaps on the spark was melted. Any advice? I will apreciate... Thanks!

  • @pacmanlatino replace the valve cover gasket, the spark plug tube seals, and all spark plug wires, that might fix it all

  • I have a Nissan Sentra with a GA16DE that's done close to about 220k miles. If I pull the spark plugs they are coated with oil on the threaded side only. I am thinking the piston rings are worn(not unlikely on a car this old) and was wondering if that is most likely the case and what it would cost to have them replaced? (Dis-assembly of the entire engine block and what not)

  • @Elementlmage yep, total engine rebuild would be needed in most cases, but if it runs, live with it. And if you want to keep it, get one of those used japanese engines to replace it with, as I show in my vid" How to replace an engine in your car"

  • hi scotty great videos i have a saturn ls2 v6 took the spark plug out but i had lots of oil on the thread side of the spark plug did i blow my engine some one said i should put an adapter on it what do you think

  • @dianemarie909 go ahead and do that, just realize the engine is wearing out inside and will only last so much longer.

  • @scottykilmer also i found that my timing belt is bad

  • @scottykilmer ty i also have a bad timing belt

  • Scottie, I wish I could meet you. Your a genius , you have helped me fix my Camry for years and I want to say thanks and Merry Christmas- go team USA

  • When this happens will the engine burn oil?

  • @richu27 no, just leak oil.

  • @scottykilmer My vehicle is kinda drinking oil. but it has only covered 80,000KMs (50,000Miles). It has sat without running for long time. Is there anything I should? Can carbon build up cause drinking of oil?

  • @richu27 it can a small amount, but normally it's worn piston rings from not changing the oil enough, or just a bad pcv valve, change that, it's cheap

  • @scottykilmer Thanks. :)

  • @richu27 wont burn oil, but ive seen on some cars that it might cause a cylinder misfire if its not fixed soon. the oil will cause the plug boot to soften

  • @sonylover27 Thanks for that info buddy. That vehicles does have misfire problem at times but was fixed after the highway run it made recently. I might be having it for few weeks probably next month. So, will check it out. :)

  • Is it customary to change that gasket for the spark plugs when you have your valve cover gasket replaced. I just had mine done but never thought to ask to have this done.

  • @tigergreg8 no, often they will not change the seals, cheap kits only come with the valve gasket itself.

  • Hey Scotty why do you clean everything with the break cleaner?

  • @djmussy18 because hes Scotty...lol..nah im sure he uses it cause it works very well breaking down tough oil deposits, grim, etc

  • @jlagraba ohh ok, thanks, because i thought they sell different products for the outside of the engine and the breaks, i guess i'll just use the break cleaners...

  • @djmussy18 cause it leaves no residue.

  • is the headgasket not a rubber piec that goes under the valve cover ps i dont now much bout this kind of stuff lol

  • @unboxingguru1 no, that's the valve cover gasket. Head gasket is lower down, VERY expensive to replace.

  • Hey scotty would you have to change the spark plugs as well, or can you just clean them off?

  • @LenHernandez1 clean em

  • hey scotty i did this on my 88 civic and the engine definitely sounds a lot nicer, except my idle speeds around 2000 rpm. how can you adjust this?

  • @elementality2431 Sounds like you may have left a vacuum line off or got some of them mixed up.

  • i have a 1996 toyota 4runner and I have changed the plugs several times. I recently changed the wires but i am now finding oil covered plugs. I spoke with a mechanic and he told me the piston ring seals were leaking causing this problem. Would you have any ideas on what would cause this?

  • @jstory25 depends where the oil is, if the whole plugs are wet, the spark plug tube gaskets just need changing as in this video. If only the firing ends are worn, yes, the engine has internal wear like valve seals being bad or worn piston rings. BIG money there. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer that is what i hear. I ran a oil additive that is suppose to help seal those leaks, do you know if that stuff actually works or not?

  • @jstory25 rarely does any sealer fix oil plug seals, just remove the valve cover and put new seals on. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer thanks

  • @scottykilmer and i have also recently purchased like plug extenders that set the plugs higher hopefully keeping oil off them. Will they work and run exactly the way it did before when the plugs set down further in the engine?

  • I have a 94 Toyota Camry 4 cyl and I lost a lot of power and fells like it was one using 3 cyls so changed the spark plugs and noticed the spark plug tube was full of oil after changing the spark plugs nothing changed still lack of power and white smoke when it starts idles real ruff and ideas ?

  • How far do you torque the grommets in?

    Thanks.

  • @MogTrader just hand tighten, then 30 degrees further using a wrench. Scotty

  • hi scottykilmer i got a honda accord ex 1995 ,2.2 engine standard .the spark plug is covered with engine oil is it the same way to change like this video or should go to a mecanic ,write to me please ,thank you your video are very helpfull ,keep it going .

  • @TheShaailesh do the same as this video to fix it. Scotty

  • Ausome helmat scotty

  • was filled oil. I don't get it. Cylinder #1 had oil in it too. Why isn't this car starting? It is cold outside today and yesterday it was kind of warm, then it rained (if it helps). Is it worth fixing or selling?

  • @trevockeys if they're filled with oil, the engine is just wearing out, period. it would need rebuilding, more than that thing's worth really. When they fill with oil, they will not spark and start up. Scotty

  • Hello Scotty, I currently own a 1997 Mercury Mystique. As of today, it will not start, again. Yesterday I had a guy look at it (because it wasn't starting), so he cleaned the spark plugs because they had oil on them. After using starting fluid and cleaning the plugs, the car started. A lot of exhaust came out of the car. Power did come back to the car after cleaning the plugs. Now today, the car wont start again. When I looked at the distributor, cylinder#3 was off its place, also the plug

  • it seems hard to believe that oil can seep around the top of the tube where the seal is. is it possible that it is leaking from the other end of the tube?

  • @scottgb2 No, they leak from the top, most cars the bottom is sealed permanently with no seal but metal and sealer contact. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer HI Scotty I think in my case the oil is coming from the bottom where the cylinder are and coiming up through the spark plug. that may be head gasket ???? let me know if this is possible thanks

  • @samvid74 could be blown head gasket, could be worn valve seals or worn piston rings. But something inside the engine has gone amiss. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer 5th generation Honda Civics have a separate set of gaskets on the bottoms of the spark plug tubes that can also leak. You have to remove the valve assembly to get to them.

  • Mr.Kilmer ,my #4 spark plug had sludgy threads? #s 1,2,and 3 were fine(clean). whats that a sign of?

  • @EncinitasLokal often a sign of oil burning inside that cylinder, meaning the engine is wearing. But if it runs fine, just leave it. Engine rebuilds are expensive. Scotty

  • Dang Dude You're Awesome! I also ride btw.

  • Hey Scotty I have a 91 accord ex and I'm having trouble starting it. I just recently changed my battery spark plugs and wire and the starter. It would start at times but now it only cranks. I was wondering can having oil on the spark plug cause this. I noice when I changed my spark plugs it was the same as your video so I plan on buying a valve cover gasket set. So could the oil cause this to not start? I know I have fuel and I recently cleaned the fuel injector also cleaned the iacv if that ma

  • @imFAMOUSxD certainly replace the gasket set, but normally those old things need new distributors when they do that. If you have no spark when it doesn't start, replace the dist. Scotty

  • i heard it could also be head gasket? Is it true?

  • @racer7007 Only if the oil is just on the bottom of the plug and not the top. scotty

  • Hey man for a v6, do u need 2 valve gasket kits?

  • @kipper2me the kits come with both gaskets. Scotty

  • what happens if I put the valve cover back on, but the spark plug wires wont meet up with the plugs, i checked and there is nothing in the way... ??? SUper confused!!

  • @antmannwins717 probably don't have the gasket all the way in, or they sold you a too thick gasket. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer do you think it could be that there was too much gasket sealer used? guy @ Auto Zone told me to use it on the whole thing, but I notice that you only used on the corners here..

  • @antmannwins717 yes, could have too much sealer, I only use it on edges. and just a little. Scotty

  • it's time for Scotty Kilmar dot com

  • Hey Scotty. I have a 1999 Dodge Stratus, and for the last few months it seems that every time I hit 45, 50, or 60mph, the car jerks when I give it a little bit of throttle. Whenever I coast or give it more throttle, the jerk goes away. Do you think this is problem with the ignition system or the transmission and if so, how should I go about repairing it? Thanks again!

  • @pittsburgh9109 It could be either, best thing to do is pay a mechanic with a dealer level scan tool to analyze it, things are THAT complex these days, even if I rode in the car, I couldn't tell without scanning it. Scotyt

  • Hey Scotty, Quick question, I Have oil about half way up in my spark plug chamber when i took the tube off. Is my spark plug spoiled now? and can I fix it with a new gasket? Or do I have a bigger problem? I Have a 1997 Saturn SC2

  • @Donmega884 plugs can be cleaned and reused. Put new gaskets on em all, cause they will all be worn.Scotty

  • haha i have this same engine(5sfe) with the identical problem!!! this vid really helped me out since im going to school to be a mechanic. thanks scotty.

  • 2nd try to explain... the car shifts perfectly and smoothly..once in a while (usually 2/10 times) ONLY when i fully open the throttle, it will have sluggish aceleration that quickly picks up speed and shifts into 2nd with no problems...

i worked hard to pay this car off, so i really apprecient your help.

    joey 4m SD,CA

  • @EncinitasLokal weak fuel pumps or dirty fuel injectors can do that, pressure test the pump and watch my video "how to clean fuel injectors in your car" to see how they are cleaned. Scotty

  • @13fravelj... I have before>deppends on how many miles are on em>but if you replace one, you have to replace the rest of them> look out for corrosion.

simple advice, take it or leave it ")

  • my last comment... i have a feeling its the tranny slipping>like i said before, at a red light 3/10 times, when i open the throttle, it doesnt go anywhere(the rpms stay at 3000s)...MAYBE>i.a.c.valve is clogged... whats ur take?

    (2of2)

  • @EncinitasLokal time for a new tranny or a new car. Scotty

  • Doesn't brake cleaner corrode rubber?

  • @zeboink No, if it did the brake callipers would then leak as they use rubber seals. Scotty

  • hey scotty, can you clean off the spark plugs and reuse them or is it a good Idea to buy new ones?

  • now hear this , while stopped at a red light.. once the ligh turns green and i open the throttle (celica gt automatic) the car has "sluggish acceleration" not all the time however.

youve been such a great help!!!

  • did the job with a buddy of mine.. the valve gasket comes with the spark plug seals all in one piece...

  • Hey Scotty great video. My dodge caravan 2000 has all of a sudden started running rough, so I thought I should change the spark plugs.. While changing the spark plugs, I noticed there was alot of oil. Once

I changed the spark plugs my van still runs rough--Any sugguestions on how to fix my van?

  • Thanks alot love your videos!

  • can i use any silicone for gaskets or does it have to be gasket sealer? I know you were using that black stuff. Iam sorry for the questions just trying to learn lol!

  • @nico27004 I don't use silicone sealer, it can mess up the oxygen sensors and cats. Stick to the 3M weatherstripping I use. Scotty

  • whats the name of that sealer you put on the gaskets or glue?

  • @nico27004 It's 3M weatherstripping glue, the black one. Scotty

  • I clean then plugs put them back in and smoke came out the pip for a few mins and now its fine ,, so do you think if i do wat you do in this video it will fix it thanks jo

  • I have the same in my scenic 1.4 would you get blue smoke from this its just now and agen not all the time ,, i have oil all over my plugs

  • @joeyandrews100 blue smoke is a combo of burning oil and burning metal, the blue tint is metal, the smoke is oil. Scotty

  • how much should it be to do that repair(at a shop) your information is verry usefull, im watching all ur videos =)

  • @EncinitasLokal depends where you go, a hundred bucks at an honest shop. Scotty

  • Thanks A bunch!!! i hope its not anything too bad.. i drive on the freeway daily (75-80mph on average)

  • Nice vid, you dont see too many like this anymore..keep em comin!

2002 toy. celica gt>spark plugs had oil> chamber wasnt filled, just oil on all 4 plugs when pulled> what should i tell my mechanic?-thanks a million!! -joey 4m SD,CA-

  • @EncinitasLokal change the valve cover gasket and the spark plug tube seals. Scotty

  • Same problem, but on a 1996 dodge avenger base model 4 cylinder 2.0 mfi dohc 16 valve 1 is covered with oil.

  • Scotty,

I have a 02' Nissan Maxima and I found the Spark plug and coil full of oil, how the heck am I going to clean that out, and how well do I have to clean it?

  • my spark pluggs are covered with oil. my car burns oil alot. 90 acura integra. what could it be?

  • @Meze2Official worn out valve seals and or piston rings. Scotty

  • no torquing?

  • @caseman2294 I know what I'm doing, I rarely use torque wrenches. If you dont' know what you're doing, look it up in a book and use a torque wrench. Scotty

  • Hi Scotty, how do I know if is a worn out engine with bad valve seals or pistons?

my car is running well, I was changing my spark plugs and when i put the extension wrench to untied my spark plug the container was full of oil. Actually the cylinder were all the spark plugs goes are full of oil.

    thanks

  • @peruanox you do a compression test of the engine, and then a cylinder leak down test. If you don't have the tools, see a mechanic to do it for you.Scotty

  • Wow Scotty, you explain clearly, quickly, and enthusiastically this is a great tutorial video! Right to the heart of the matter, thanks!

  • Scotty, I have oil in 2 and 4 cylinders. The spark plug was burned out in one. Could changing the gaskets help or is this a worst problem. The other two plugs were dry. Help

  • we have a bad rear main seal in our truck, does that gasket sealer stuff work?

  • my spark plugs were covered with oil. i have VW Jetta MK2 (1985).

    what should i do ?

  • @paroleirparole change the gaskets like in this video and pray it's not a worn out engine with bad valve seals or pistons. Scotty

  • Don't forget this is the perfect time to check and adjust your valve lash on OHV engines, too!

  • jfranklin19919 i had them do exactly how it was shown on the video and it doesnt do it anymore. i appreciate it tho thanks for ur help both u and scotty

  • Hey Scotty can an engine stall because of oil soaked spark plugs? My Nisan Quest 96 has been stalling frequently the last two weeks. I thought it was because of worn out s-plugs. When I removed the old ones for replacement, I found that the ones in the engine were oil soaked.

  • @simenyasikhulu yes, that can easily short them out, fix it like in this video. Scotty

  • my sparkplugs are soaked on the firing end i meah pure saoked what can i do and why is it happening

  • @A1Curt that means the engine is burning oil, time for a new engine in most cases. BUT, if you change the gaskets as I show here, it may be that the oil just gets on their ends because you remove them and the tubes are full of oil so they leak on the ends too. Scotty

  • my sparkplugs are soaked on the firing end i meah pure saoked

  • ive had my valve cover gasket and spark plug tubes changed twice already because i found a bit of oil down the sockets before, and today i found a whole lot of oil down one of them. any idea what is causing this? I called pepboys and they said it could be the head gasket but my car isnt smoking

  • @JBWDC3 Head gasket leaks will not get oil on the whole plugs, only on the firing end. If it's on the whole plug, someone did a crappy job last time. Scotty

  • @JBWDC3 another easy way to see if u have a bad head gasket is to check the oil dipstick to see if your fluids are mixing together, another example is checking your antifreeze in the radiator to see if it has a strong gasoline odor or oil mixing in with it, it would probably be floating on the top. The car would smoke something AWFUL if u indeed had a bad head gasket. Just some examples.

  • @JBWDC3 its the bottom gasket theres some of the bottom of the valve cover than theres more under the cam cage or your rocker arm assembly whatever u want to call it i know because mine was doing the same thing and i replaced the valve cover gaskets and it still done it so i replaced them and it dosent do it any more

  • Scotty-couldnt it also be possibly be a bad ignition module or bad coil pack causing the spark plugs to oil foul? i have a 90 buick lesabre limited 3.8-that sat for a year in indiana while i was waiting for parts money to fix a bad heater core- my #3 and #6 plugs have been oil fouled ever since starting it after the heater core fix-runs awful and EXTREME loss of power-you have to floor it to even get it to go-mechanic says replace MAF and ign. module and coil packs due to gel leak-Any advice?

  • @Not with oil on the top of the plug, only the firing end would be wet. You could try a MAF and module, they do go bad a lot in those cars. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer it is indeed the firing end of the 2 plugs that are oil fouled, so do you mean the first answer is still correct?

  • @ULTRADREW1 If the firing ends are oil fouled, the engine has serious internal damage, like worn valve guides or piston rings. Scotty

  • It is also important to mention some 90s Hondas have two seals one on top on the underside of the valve cover and one on the bottom between the rocker assembly and the cylinder head.

These are annoying to do because you have to pull the rocker assembly to get to the lower seals which sadly are usually the culprits for the leak. The job will require a torque wrench reinstall the rocker properly.

Later Hondas luckily use the Toyota tube design which is more reliable.

  • thanyou berry muchs!!!! i own a 2001 ford crown vic and i had oil on my #1 and #7 sparck plug holes!!! i was getting worried.....now i know whats wrong with ir..

  • scotty what about the seals under the rocker they cause it to leak too

  • what the size of the nuts on the top of the valve cover?

    have a toyota camry 97

  • wow you just saved me so much money i thought head gasket was causing this so i called many shops that said it was the headgasket too so ive been looking around for a head gasket omg thank god for this vid. what are the seals called btw?

  • Hey Scotty, just wondering what type of stores stock leather oil seals... We're restoring a 1923 Fiat 501 and need to replace several of them in the diff... Can they be cut to size and made to fit from a large piece? (I'm in Australia if that helps) cheers

  • p.s., i think i disliked this video on accident. sorry.

  • Hey scotty, I have a miss-fire in my oldsmobile v6 motor. I know that the number 1 solenoid on the coil pack is not sparking like it suppose to. What i've done so far is replace number 1 coil pack with a brand new, and also replaced all plugs and wires. I have noticed a very big increase in overall performance of the vehicle. So my question is this, do you think it would be worthy of replacing the remaining two coil packs? car has 205,000mile. & i just want to do small things to help it last.

  • Scotty you know what i would love to see, is a video on how to fix a Jeeps Plenum Gasket that is leaking oil. Do you make these video's as you get customers with problems ? Or do you like borrow cars to just fix them and make video's on em ?

  • @1ownjoo2 I make videos as I fix em. I'd be insane to be borrowing peoples' cars to make them. One has to make a living in this capitalist society of ours. Scotty

  • A quick Q there are only two of my spark plugs that were covered in oil is there something different wrong with my car or do i just follow your video?

  • @LITOD4MM Just follow the video and replace all the spark plug tube seals. Scotty

  • So how can you tell the different between when you need to replace the seals and when you have a broken/cracked piston ring(s)? My 2003 Dodge Neon has been leaking oil into 2 of my spark plugs and a mechanic friend of mine seems to strongly believe that I have a cracked piston ring.

  • @corkyh The firing end of the spark plug would be oil covered if it were rings. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Hi Scott, How you remove valve cover on stratus 2000?

bolts in the back are hard to reach.

  • So do you even have to take the valve cover off to replace the seals? It seems like you could just undo the nuts and replace the seals.

  • @fanuvgod1 some cars you can do from the top, some you can't. Depends on the engine design. Scotty

  • Scotty,

Thank You !!! You saved me several hundreds dollars on 97 Camry V6. I finally replaced my valve covers' gasket, spark plug tube seals, egr, intake chamber, and throttle body gaskets. I also cleaned the egr, intake chamber and throttle body. It took 3 exhausted days but I am happy with the result. Since there are no more leaks on the valve covers, the engine has more power !!!

  • THANK YOU SCOT!

  • Scotty,

On what things do you use like using weatherstrip adhesive as opposed to a sealer? I've always liked Permatex's "Right Stuff" sealer myself but I've noticed you using 3M weatherstrip adhesive in some of your videos like this one.

Also on joints with paper gaskets such as some water pumps (SBC) and thermostat housings do you prefer to install those paper gaskets dry or do you add sealant on the paper gaskets for good measure?
