Healthcare in the U.S. is governed by the Invisible Hand. Since demand in this market is so inelastic there are wild fluctuations in the price, depending on whether you are referred by a doctor, or whether you are a walk-in in no acute distress. If you present with acute distress, and you are a self-pay, then heaven help you! You will be spending your life savings on a three-day hospital stay. The idea of Single Payer is to not penalize people for their helplessness the way free markets do.
First of all noone wants to force anyone to buy private insurance. Why do you think we want the public option so bad for. And second no one said it's the best solution. The best solution would be single payer, but this is a step closer to that (i hope).
Mandated purchase of private insurance has been featured prominently in the so called debate. The President himself has said that it is a possibility. To suggest that it hasn't even been proposed is dishonest.
I know but we are trying to hold him to his promise of a public option. If he doesn't give us a public option and he passes a law saying we have to buy health insurance from a private company all hell will break lose and I will be the first in line to vote him out of office in 2012. I think he is aware of this now after the pushback he got this weekend (from us liberal).
Noone knows how much exactly it's gonna cost but hopefully it'll be sort of like medicare which i think costs about a hundred bucks a month and it covers everything.
If they mess this up, undoing it will become my number one voting issue. I'm not going to risk my health or the health of my family because of some government screw-up.
The healthcare corporations are terrified by competition. They will not allow a public option because they know they will be destroyed by any efficiently run competition.
Hahaha. Don't worry, I think that Howard Dean has more than sufficient credentials. This was just my mostly joking attempt at answering your question. Every time I hear about Howard Dean in common conversation, that whole incident gets brought up almost instantly. The country WAY overreacted to the "BYAAAAH!!!", and unfortunately, his career has definitely taken a hit for it. Hopefully he'll get his chance soon.
That was one for the record books. Never in my life have I seen such a good politician taken down for such a trivial thing. (And by his OWN PARTY, just to add insult to injury.)
I currently support Democrats because they're BY FAR the lesser of two evils. But seriously, they should be spanked for what they did to Howard Dean and Wesley Clark. Talk about wasting your best assets.
I would rather everyone be made to pay cash for all non emergency doctors visits. Take Medicare Medicaid and private insurance companies out of the picture. Prices will come down when the government and the insurance companies are no longer allowing doctors and drug companies to charge excessive rates.
"Some GOP legislators are saying No." - fishhead06
Well then, we need to say "NO" to them too..
These GOP "legislators" have the top notch health insurance coverage, but they conveniently deny coverage to millions of uninsured and under-insured Americans.
These GOP "legislators" run for public office to get these health insurance benefits & coverage for them and their families with the courtesy of tax payers.
I totally agree with you! How can we start a grassroot movement to make those who want to deny others the right to healthcare to forego theirs! Remember they only need to serve a term and we pay thier healthcare for LIFE!
They claim to value free markets then lets let them participate in these markets with the rest of us.

What we're going to end up with is every citizen being forced to pay for insurance "coverage" that many people can't afford to begin with.
We don't need "coverage". We need health care.
grEzyRyd3r 2 years ago
There will be subsidies for people who really can't afford it.
badmuffy 2 years ago
OK who will pay the co pays and deductibles?
Millions of Americans have insurance and they can afford the premiums but they still can't afford to go to the doctor.
Millions with insurance still go bankrupt so how can you pretend that insurance is the solution when it is the problem?
If you cared one bit about people getting health care, you would not act like forcing private insurance on people is the solution.

I gave up on that a long time ago. Good luck waiting on him to govern on behalf of the working class. IMO, it's a waste of time.

Why did we think that our votes for Dems last November was going to change things. I feel totally backstabbed by this.
I really don't know that it's worth staying with a party that is no different from the GOP.

We need to get this point across. If you pass a bill without a public option.........none of you will be in office after your next elections.

the public option should not JUST be "on the table", it should be non-negotiable. Anyone who disagrees ought NOT to be at "the table".
