thanks for the vid man. I have a 90 integra Im planning to do sometime later this week. B18 shouldnt differ that much so thanks for saving me a couple hundred dollars. I do everything myself but sadly to say, I know more hands on with my subaru then with my daily driver. Damn shame, hondas are the easiest car to work on...period
did, My alternator went yesturday... So searching around on You Tube I came to your Vid.. man you made swapping my Alternator in my 92 civic EASY! BIG BIG Thumbs up bro! You rule really appreciate your help!
easy way to test of alternator is bad, is you start your car, then remove the negative terminal and if your car stop running that means your alternator is bad, because the battery is there just to give your car a jump start. and if your car is running without the battery, then its good.
Yo, thanks for the great video. I'm heading out right now to work on my '95 Civic DX, and you just walked me through everything I need to do. Nicely done, dude.
Thanks for the video. Did a 96 civic this morning and you must remove the bottom bracket to remove the dead alternator (or you'd need to remove the master cylinder to get it out the top on top of messing with a bunch of wires). We also had to force the bushing toward the wheel to put the new alternator in place.
Thanks for info. FYI the alternator in a 1998 civic has to be removed after you remove the lower bracket. It will not come out from the top, so no need to remove wire brackets, power steering hose etc.
great work my friend, did the same on my 95 civic ex, yea takin it to a shop the labor cost are outrageous espically if you get a brand new alternator, went to salvage yard and got one from a civic jus like mine and installed in myself, only cost 53 bucks for alternator and maybe a 40oz or two, keep it up man! Gonna rebuild this Honda of mine cause I will never get rid of it.
The Honda Dealership told me another customer had replaced their Honda cars alt 4 times with Auto Zone Alts each had failed in a short time. He said they finally paid about $350 for a new OEM Honda alt plus the labor to put it in. I thought this guy was pulling my leg with this story. After reading about your experience and now I too have to replace my Alt a second time with yet another Auto Zone alt because of the lifetime warranty I wonder if there is some truth to the story.
@JJRealife Alternator for a 2000 Civic from the dealership online is about $630. You go to the dealership in person and it's gonna be much higher. Probably $750 judging by how much more they charge at the dealer. Bunch of BS.
Great video, my son's alt just failed and we're getting readin to take it off, this will help a lot, thanks, Man!
One thing though.. I know it may sound obvious, but knowing my son who's a greenhorn at these things, you may want to warn people to DISCONNECT THE BATTERY WIRES before disconnecting the alternator connectors, there's live power there, I was surprised I didn't see sparks flying when you removed the battery wire and it touched the alternator ;)
@VieuxMalcommode OOOPS... I should have listen better instead of wrting WHILE watching... SORRY!!! You DID start saying the battery cable needed to be removed... Man, I feel so dumb... Thanks again for the video!!!
how difficult was it to get that bottom bolt out by hitting it the first time? cause mine is giving me allot of trouble... to the point where i had to hit the alternator with a hammer to just to get it to slide back enough to get the belt off...
this is going to be very helpful im taking my alternator out tomorrow and taking it to autozone, it just went out yesterday and i have been push starting it lol.
Do you HAVE to go under neath to get the alternator moving back and forth? Because I unscrewed a bunch of shit.. couldnt make it budge. I don't have power steering so nothing is really in the way.. any tips?
thx for this video i tried this morning take it of but i didn't see the screw at the bottom ...anyway i had the light of the battery lighting on when i press brake then one time when i will start the car just one minute and all the car start to go down like the battery has no charge ....then when i turn it off for 20 minutes and i try to start it again it works very good for one minute ...so i think its the alternator but im not sure
For anyone whos having trouble getting the alt. out the top because of the master cylinder. DONT remove the cylinder. A little more removal than may be wanted but its a hell of a lot easier taking it out the bottom. Remove your tire, the mud flap, and then the bracket. I took one bolt out and swung the bracket. Then slip out the alt that way. The master cylinder method is just way too much work. I have a 95 civic ex and my method was just fine.
your video video saved my life. well. my wallet. the only thing that was super hard was dealing with all the rust on a 16 year old car in canada. very hard hahaha. Thanks man!
i need help, for the love of god i can not get my alternator out, it is a 1997 honda civix ex with a d16y7 motor and it just wont get out, from the top or the sides, do i actually have to take out the bracket and the axle? if so then :(
Thanks for the video, but I ran into an issue with the "strange" bot setup on the bottom. The nut started to loosen but due to rust when it got near the end it got harder and the hole bolt started to spin. I couldn't get it to stop and I was wondering if you had any suggestions. Its the bolt with a hex nut on one end a square head on the other end.
hello Drew thankyou for this video ,it helped me a loot ,but i think you mised few steeps ,i dont know about you car but for my honda civic lx 1998 i had to remove main brake cylinder in orde to have more space ,and i dont know wy but power steering fluid was coming from the main pump when i removed Power Steering Pressure Line Hose
Nice instructional video. I've done the install before so I know how to do it, however I just watched it to see what tools I needed. You should include the socket sizes and other tools in the video description for people like me :)
I really like your humor while doing this alternator change on that civic, I recall changing one on a 96 and shit I cursed a lot on how to remove that sucker out of there. nice DIY tutorial
The alternator being a month old tells me one of two things. Something is causing the alternator to fail, such as a bad battery or it really was a bad alternator. I was a rebuilder so I can tell you that if it lasted a month, it should have kept on working. I suspect you have put another one on since. Keep trying to inform the public but be informed yourself before you pass on this knowledge. This is where mechanics and technicians get a bad rap. Good luck to you.
@DrewsGarage Auto Zone remanufactured parts are INFAMOUS for failure. The shop I work for won't put one in even if you buy it and bring it to us. No way, Jose.
Drew, I applaud anyone who tries to inform or teach the public on "how to" do things but where I have a problem is when people pass on bad knowledge and other people follow. The light on as you mentioned could mean several things. Disconnecting the battery at the positive post is a no-no. The large cable at the alternator is direct from the battery and connects to the insulated B+ terminal (Brown O-ring thing). The grounding points on the alternator were not clean nor was the mounting.
i could not fit it through the top opening i got a 93 i pulled iut through the bottom with some twisting ,,ur video was agreat help ,,the top was just too tight ,,
i got a 93 ex i actually got it out through the bottom with out removing the bottom bracket or the axle ,i just had to move two cables over but it took some twisting and turning to get the other back in the same opening ,nut thank you drew u were a great help
