I love Kelly's vocals here. And he still had that strong voice as he got older. What a loss. At least watching him at 0:01-0:20 will always make me smile.
This is a really cool version. This is the only one I've ever seen/heard where Kelly Groucutt sings the lead. Very good. I like how they segue into Do Ya, too. Guess Jeff didn't decide to add cellos to it till much later. This sounds a lot like the Move version.

@ivanthecuddly - Roy is good in his own right, but I think his departure is what helped make ELO what it became - a stellar pop-rock band. The first album was just weird, and disjointed. Their songs got much better when Lynne had the reins by himself.
Jeff Lynne couldn't even sing his original part on 10538? And the Move version of Do Ya was always the best. Don't know why Roy let Jeff have ELO. Wizzard was great and real classical Rock n Roll.
@Shooby52 - I think Jeff was just sharing the duties. He does sing part of each of the verses, and his notes are the same as Kelly's. It's not that he couldn't do it. I like how they trade off with each other.

WHAT A KILLER TRANSITION! ELO was one of the first bands to get me started on music at 3 years old back in 1980! They've been such a huge part of my musical upbringing. I wish I could've expierenced them live around this time. They just don't make 'em like they used to, and THAT-IS-A-FACT!
This reminds me of the first time I ever saw ELO. On TV somewhere, all I remember from that is the fabulous wall of sound, and the violins and cellos all over the stage, and wild, deep sounds. I am pretty sure it was 10538, but no way of knowing for sure.
Sad news today to hear about Kelly Groucutt's passing. He was a huge part of ELO's success in the 70s and early 80s. This video showcases his talent as a singer in his own right. RIP Kelly...
Richard Tandy really knows his keyboards! To me ELO peaked on the A NEW WORLD RECORD ALBUM and perhaps OUT OF THE BLUE. DISCOVERY and TIME were great but you can tell the band was starting to take a different direction. The orchestra instruments were taking more of a progressively back seat which I didn't like. Still everything they did from the 1st album through TIME was excellent.
People shouldn't equate the lack of another songwriter in ELO with the fact that none of them could write. In fact, Lynne did all the producing and songwriting because he wouldn't allow others to contribute. So, years later, when he complained that he did "everything" in ELO, that was because he insisted it be that way. So now he can't complain about it. The fact remains that ELO was once a formidible touring band, and has only played perhaps 4 gigs in the U.S. since 1981. Hardly alot...
Bevan is very cool and talented just like every ELO musician, but the driving creative force was Lynne. Bevan never even wrote one song for ELO, or produced one, or edited one, or decided what instruments would be best to use. Those were Lynne's ideas. And Lynne wrote great pop-rock music from the beginning to the present of his career.
Bevan is an awesome drummer. Too bad that during ELO's last 6 years of existence his drumming style (not to mention drum machines) became very basic to record pop songs.
in what year did they make this? is a complete recital or just those songs? I only have the concert Out of the Blue and Zoom Tour and I want to get more material live of ELO...
Very good stage performance! First time I saw Groucutt singing lead voice. It would have better for ELOs success if not Jeff was so much in the center of stage and attention. But "It's over!". They won't ever come back in that formation we see here. Jeff get's along well with Tandy. But with the rest of the group,
I don't think so. But IF they do, it would not be like the Beatles in 1994/1995.
ELO would need a really excellent comeback single in the music style from today. Then I
A very formidible live band at one time. Too bad that Jeff Lynne has played maybe 4 shows in the United States since their last US tour ended in 1981. I was fortunate to see them on that tour. If the Time Tour would have been properly advertised as the group's swan song (as it was), they would have filled all the arenas instead of relying on Hall and Oates to do some of that (who had a top 10 album at the time with Private Eyes). Missed opportunities all around for this band.
Not being a huge ELO fan I assumed it was simply Jeff Lynne and a buncha backing musicians(at least that the way I perceived HE wanted it to be). Seeing this I can see that like Tull from 68-80,this was a BAND,a GREAT BAND.
Keep in mind this is the same ELO lineup that had the chance to headline Knebworth in 1979, but Jeff Lynne turned it down. Led Zep got the shot instead. A major blunder in my opinion.
I heard that the song was about a prisoner of war with the number 10538 tattooed on his head. I don't know if this is true but it sort of makes sense of the lyrics and makes quite a sad tale.
According to the inside record cover of the album the 10538 Overture came in, the serial number was of Leonardo da Vinci's model of his flying machine, a crude precursor of a gyrocopter.
actually this brings tears due to the reality of musicians playing real music with real feeling w/o all of the"stuff" that whats called music nowadays is filled with.
it seems that if you can play 2-3 chords and can scream you can call yourself a musician, what a load of crap..
Jr Its great to know some one feels the same way do.These guys are like Led Zep,Deep Purple,ETC..You'll never hear rock and roll Gods like these again....Theres no voilence or gun talk..Just real rock and roll,Oh yeah,RAP SUX,and should be banned!!!
Hell yeah!

Now... THAT'S ELO!
And YES, if they could re-form (transl.: get past whatever bitterness they developed over the years), they'd make a PILE!
(and if they need an extra guy on keys, I'm available!)

Keep in mind this is the same ELO lineup that had the chance to headline Knebworth in 1979, but Jeff Lynne turned it down. Led Zep got the shot instead. A major blunder in my opinion.

What does the serial # have to do with some dude runnin through the streets?
1973JB 3 years ago
I heard that the song was about a prisoner of war with the number 10538 tattooed on his head. I don't know if this is true but it sort of makes sense of the lyrics and makes quite a sad tale.
derrytift2 3 years ago
According to the inside record cover of the album the 10538 Overture came in, the serial number was of Leonardo da Vinci's model of his flying machine, a crude precursor of a gyrocopter.
CalyxAsgard 3 years ago
Because it was the serial number on the mixing desk!
This gig is amazing! Cant wait for someone to clean it up and release it on DVD!!

actually this brings tears due to the reality of musicians playing real music with real feeling w/o all of the"stuff" that whats called music nowadays is filled with.
it seems that if you can play 2-3 chords and can scream you can call yourself a musician, what a load of crap..
revwjh 3 years ago 9
Yeah, that stuff's a bunch of crap...so let's stick with some good ol' ELO and some good ol' rock!!!
Love Jeff's guitar and Richard's keyboard playing in this...when will Jeff rejoin ELO???
