THe only reason we still use pilots onboard is for backup and safety and eventually the backup system will be so reliable the chances of them failing will be the same as a technical problem that could cause any aviation crash. The future of pilots may actually be on the ground with a vr headset linked to a hd panoramic camera onboard tthe aircraft. I personally think cargo flights coudl be all unmanned as no life wud bne at risk

Anyone who knows anything about Harrier jump jets or the Osprey rotary tilt aircraft knows that a VTOL aircraft is only as good as it's vertical to horizontal transition stability.
This was obviously a vertical lift and decent test but if it doesn't have quick vertical to horizontal take off that stable it's junk!
frankly I think they should use the concept of a autogyro which would be nothing more than putting a unpowered helicopter rotor on top of the UAV and that would help the design considerably.
I'm sure some people just fell out of their chairs hearing me say autogyro, but with a swivel turbofan (like the back of the Comanche helicopter) instead of that jet it would have the same speed and much greater stability.

Doubleing the size is fine for large operations...but scaling down by half and reducing the munitions size to 1/4 would reduce colatteral damage when enguaging small soft targets. A smaller craft would be easier for the infintery to transport and harder to target/hit. Couple this bird with miniturized/polymerized heat-seeking charge-shaped sub-munitions & the enemy had best stay home. Kudos to your R&D team...war-fighting will never be the same. 400lb weapons + batteries + fuel... you have a reduced loiter time for its size. There are helicopter UAVs that have the same VTOL with I bet a better fuel efficiency per pound. You have limited control surfaces and depend more so on the fans to maneuver. That'll be a big waste of fuel and if one of the flaps under the fans malfunctions the whole system has its work load increased to make once simple now intensive turns.

Anybody can strap a jet engine onto somthing and make it hover.
The problem is that it probly sucks fuel at a prodigious rate and has a limited range.
The UAV concept is tried and tested. Been there they done that.
How about people really start thinking out of the box.

Of course you should be protecting your troops and defending your country. But what people fail to understand is that difficult choices must be made between spending on warfare and spending on education, health etc. I personally think a smarter and a healthier country is more important than a mighty one. Besides, let's face it. Even if the US were to lessen spending on the military you'd still be the most powerful country by far.

Being attacked on 9/11 could be considered an invasion of our boarders. Although the Hawaiian Islands were US Territory at the time, we were invaded in 1941 by the Japanese. The last two may not fully fall under invasion, but pretty dang close.. You just go back to sticking your head in the sand.

400lb weapons + batteries + fuel... you have a reduced loiter time for its size. There are helicopter UAVs that have the same VTOL with I bet a better fuel efficiency per pound. You have limited control surfaces and depend more so on the fans to maneuver. That'll be a big waste of fuel and if one of the flaps under the fans malfunctions the whole system has its work load increased to make once simple now intensive turns.
