I don't understand why anyone would think there's a perception gap. He was an Ivy League educated albeit well-traveled man who has always been a political animal and lawyer.

Obama pitched his political tent in the middle of the Chicago machine when he could have won an easier district in the Northeast. Every indication was that he would be a center left President who would put the precedent of law over the idealism he may or may not have preached; which is exactly what happened.

My family and friends sighed and shook their heads at me when, during his presidential campaign, I said I didn't trust Obama. He never said anything of substance, anything specific. He seemed deliberately vague--kind of an actor or sales man (or con man?) who had an excellent script writer. Also, the adulation, the worship of Obama as a savior following the evil reign of Bush-Cheney et al was a big clue to who Obama was--and was not.
