@ashthedragon Oops. I had forgotten to remove the note in the video description. I long ago updated the sheet music with Senoue's name. I hadn't heard that Jackson was confirmed though. Neat.
@MrBobz1998 If you copy the URL in the description and replace "gumballsonic3.pdf" with "gumballsonic.mid" (remove the 3 and change pdf to mid) you'll find a MIDI file of the arrangement (as it appears on the paper -- not as Tom is embellishing it).
@zZLordGirZz I don't understand the question. If you mean a member of the Long family, no, though I think Stan was there earlier that night. Sitting in the stool is ragtime pianist Will Perkins ("wilscool" on YouTube). The other person video recording is Carl Matts ("verybigrifle" on YouTube).
This is one of the few tunes from Sonic 3 I don't recall. Someone that remembers it: Is it the special stage with you bouncing against the walls and something overhead with balls inside with the different shields?
@dbzlotrfan Yeah. It had the different shields, rings, and extra lives. And each time you turned the switch to get a new ball, the device would lower a bit more and there was a layer of springboards at the bottom that vanished when you used it.
@IILarrII I don't understand the question. The video was shot once (by me and by "verybigrifle" from the other side). There's no editing or anything, so nothing to "get right". If you're referring to Tom, he hadn't played a note of this tune before the videos started recording, which is why there are a few muffed notes here and there and why I provide the disclaimer that it's a sight-read in the description.
@Keeper1st Ooh. Well according to your reply, Tom(?) must be a very good piano player if this is his first time, to read and to play at the sime time is very impressive.
As a beginning player I still have to ''learn'' the notes and ''get them right'' in order to play as well as Tom does
@IILarrII Don't we all! Tom has the advantage of having learned to read music at a very young age, so, as he has explained, it's like reading a sentence. He can process music on the page just as quickly as written words. There are several other videos by me and others of Tom sight-reading stuff, as well as, of course, tunes he actually knows (if you think the sight-reads are amazing, watch him play some of his own compositions like Blue Lampshade, Razor Blades, Elephant Tracks, or Spasmodic!).
@jchillerup It's an interesting left-brain/right-brain thing. I can tap syncopated rhythm in my right hand while keeping an even beat with my left -- no problem. However, I absolutely cannot syncopate with my left hand while tapping an even beat with my right. Tom has no problem either way, nor does any of the ragtime pianists I know.
The rare Youtube video so undeniably impressive that with almost 3000 views, not one person has disliked it. I thought this was only a thing of myth...
@Certamaniac There's another one of Tom that has over 21000 views and no dislikes. See vhRBGCS8mlc
Usually someone eventually comes along and dislikes them either because the music isn't played in the boring exact way the game does them, or because they simply don't believe that Tom is really sight-reading these things.
@Keeper1st idk, tom brier, when not brierizing something, and plays it in the exact way it was played and written in notation he is the only person i know of that can still play it better than the original. And I think any dislikes were either ppl hitting thumbs down by mistake or youtube has to manually enter them in to balance their systems because they have only a handful of CPU space to process perpetual "thumbs-upping". If I'm not mistaken one tom brier video had more likes than views...
@vellapo It was after midnight, so the yawn can be forgiven. That's Will Perkins, by the way -- an excellent pianist in his own right (several videos on YouTube of him in action), at just 17 years old.
Tom really enjoyed playing this, didn't he? Something about the way he played it and how he just added so much into it makes me feel that he really did have fun with it.
It's really cool to hear what this guy can do with simple themes. And how he doesn't repeat himself through all those repeats! Normally such a short loop would become tiresome to listen to after around 3 loops but he kept it fresh and probably could have kept going.
If it hasn't been stated before, I'll state it here, this man NEEDS to do a Video Game Ragtime tribute album.
Yes, the suggestion is possible trite, naive, self centered even. But Damnit! This man is an awesome pianist, and the things he does to these songs is AMAZING, and should be put onto a CD for several reason :)
@osmarcenero He has played it. There is no video -- well, nothing postable. It was certainly too complex of a tune for a sight-read (well, actually his sight-read was quite amazing given the complexity of the tune, but it certainly wasn't very clean), but if he does practice it and play it for real someday, I'll be sure to record it. Don't get your hopes up, but you never know; he did like the tune.
My goodness, that was fantastic to watch and listen! I am only an amateur musician and also a retro gamer, and this is - by far - my favorite YouTube piano render of a video game theme. Thank you for posting this! Cheers
Just so you know, Jun Senoue composed this song (he said so himself), not Masato Nakamura (He only worked on Sonic 1 & 2, and had nothing to do with 3).
@wazkatango Are you sure he wrote this tune in particular? All I've been able to find is a list of people who wrote music for the game -- nothing that says who wrote which tune.
@Keeper1st I did a quick search on Sonic Retro, the definitive source of information about Sonic games, and apparently Senoue admitted he composed all the bonus themes in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It's on page "Jun_Senoue_interview_by_LOst_(June_2002)" on the Sonic Retro Wiki (I can't post an url here because youtube is stupid but if you google for Sonic Retro Wiki you will find it).
I already commented on the other version of this video, but this is so awesome, I will comment here as well :)
Seriously, this is officially my new favourite song ever. I printed the sheet and I am trying to learn how to play this... I will never be as good as Tom, but I am practicing every day, thanks Keeper1st :)
I know your always looking for new ideas for music to give him, so while listening to a song from Super Mario Sunshine, I thought of you. It's the music for the level "Pinna Park." It seems like it might be a good candidate for something that Tom could really flesh out. There are you a few places you can find sheet music. First google result for "Pinna Park dark link" has one. "ninsheetmusic Pinna Park" leads to a simpler, possibly more useful version :)
Tom is simply amazing. I've really been missing his video game music performances. Fantastic arrangement, too! I'd love to hear more Sonic songs from you two! :D
Michael jackson as been ocnfirmed to have composed Sonic 3's BSO, but not this theme. This one is from Jun Senoue
