  • After listening to many versions of "Erie Canal" last night on You Tube, I have found that most are the Thomas Allen version and the other versions are just about gone. I found only one "The Weavers" version that is the same as the Burl Ives version that I would say were the most well known in the 50s. I would also say that the Village Stomper's "Washington Square" is so well done and set such an novel mood when heard that it should be considered an original song ( as does Sam's song).

  • The Village Stompers removed the "Low Bridge" part that makes it sound like a different song. The "low bridge" part is in the original. Sammy's based on the Village Stompers version and maybe other versions that removed the "low bridge" part. in fact most versions I have heard in my life do not have the "low bridge" part in and a reason would be it destroys the tempo. Burl Ives recorded a very different version in the 50s. I had it on a 33 record until I lost most of my 33s in 2002.

  • @tomdoh345, Thanks for the additional info about Thomas S. Allen and "Fifteen Miles on the Erie Canal". From what I heard on other videos on YouTube, including Suzanne Vega and The Boss, it does not sound quite the same, maybe it's the slower tempo. Interesting nonetheless.

  • @qaptainqwerty and crazy hanyu : Sam Hui song is probably based on the Village Stomper song But they are not original even though they called it "Washington Square"as if it was a new song. I thought it was an Anon. Folk Folk or Common Domain until recently when I found out that it's original name of the song was "Fifteen Miles on the Erie Canal" and it was written in 1905 by Thomas S. Allen. Versions of this song have recently been done by Bruce Springsteen (Live Dublin) and Suzanne Vega.

  • @tomdoh345

Thanks for the info on the origins of the song. i suspected it went back to way before the Village Stompers...

  • @manyi226 wtf

  • wow, so much memories. I sang this song when i was kid.

  • @mlsi

  • From the bottom of my humble heart....Thank You so much GanonC.

Whats the tittle of this movie PLEASE.... anyone???

It would be lovely if some kind hearted person could translate the lyrics of this song in English for the general public ( for me as well I should admit!!!!). You see I dont speak cantonese. It must have some lovely words too I should think so. If only I could understand them...... *sigh........

  • @PPLKUL hi im a local. if u want, i can do the translation for you. this song is very meaningful for me since i was in elementary school. also, the lyrics is so positive.

  • @ABC29965

Hi there good fella. Its so nice of you to volunteer. I shall be anxiously waiting for the lyrics. Ummm... you could display them in here you know. Break em up into 2 or 3 postings if the volume is too large. Something beautiful such as this is more meaning if shared...thankies anyway.

  • thanks for sharing these. i want to go out and get a Sam Hui greatest hits CD. remember listening to this as a kid, and singing along.

  • love it. (:

我都好中意聽舊歌(e.g.Beyond.....)

  • sounds like a black and white minstrel adaption.

  • Washington Square by the Village Stompers 1963

    - but probably had more traditional roots.

Sam Hui does a nice version, anyway.

  • I love the songs, me and my sister used to sing this and laugh along with the lyrics.

  • @crazyhanyu Thank you so much for posting. I heard the Sam Hui song first then one day saw a TV commercial that uses the Village Stompers version. I have been searching off and on for the name, since I know Sam Hui often sings Chinese versions of popular tunes. I played the Sam Hui song for Shazam to I.D., hoping maybe it would not be able to tell Chinese from English, but perhaps because Hui is now more popular, it tagged the song as such.

  • @qaptainqwerty

Good to hear that Sam is becoming more widely known. Ironically I met a young person in HK the other day who hadn't a clue who he was. I hope she was an exception...

  • I love this song. they used to have this on tv.

  • classic meaningful song!

  • classic song

  • I believe in myself......

  • DO YOU BELIEVE IN GOD! If so i get one question.......... Why every cornea of the EARTH HAVE A DIFFERENT GOD? (THE WEIRD THING IS THAT WE ARE THE SAME SPECIES) DO YOU BELIEVE IN GOD? IT IS YOU CHOSE.

  • Per Myrberg "Washington Square"

  • Thank you!

  • Great classic song!

  • exactly wat is this suppose to be about/

is it suppost to be on kids, or god?

  • mind to share your view?

it's an inspiring song for children, in my opinion~

  • its about students, and their exams, and how they just play around.

  • Exactly wat is your agenda suppose to be about/ is it an unfunny joke, or god?

  • A simple yet inspiring song to share :)

  • Imagine that this song was made to inspire those kids in the 80s to be diligent students so they'll contribute to the society and get themselves good life. these kids are now more than a full adult and they're probably grateful if they recall this song

  • where did they capture the movie? i would like to go there for a visiT
