  • does anyone know what keys are each harmonicas?

  • Adam, you say this song is in G minor and you are playing a C harp. It sounds very third position type song to me so wouldn't that be an F harp? Just askin'

  • @fsoliver: I'm playing a C harp in a way that avoids the major third. I'm not playing an F harp. I'm flatting the 3 draw and I'm avoiding the 7 draw iin favor of the 6 overblow.

  • What a sweet sound you guys get

  • I study at the kudzu univercity

  • Great stuff guys!

  • No way, you know Jimi Lee?! I have seen him a couple of times in Austin and he and I just recently started talking a bit. I am a harmonica player out of San Antonio and I get a lot of inspiration from your music Adam. I've never had formal lessons before in the 8 yrs I've been playing and I'm hoping I'll have the opportunity to learn some from him soon. Meeting you one day of course would be a great honor.

  • at first this put a smile on my face and then my reaction changed to serious appreciation for the music. inspiring. so that tune is a G minor jam and the key of the harp was WHAT?

  • good practice ; - ) =

  • I love how the 2 of you make this all meld together so well.....Love it!

  • apisteuto!!!

  • great guys thankyou !

  • I think Jimi Lee is using a Eb major harp in 5th position brilliantly

  • too low to be an Eb, and doesn't sound as a lowEb

  • 5th position, that means you start blowing on second hole making a G

  • So, it's in gminor, needs to be played on a Bb or F or C if you can bend it down to minor by valve, tuning or genius. And if you master that, ìt was so hard, you forget how it works. Beautiful and sad instruction experience for your students Mr Gusow

Amused and still searching for the right bend...

    Stefan

  • Hey Adam,

All your videos have really helped me along more than any book I've ever had. I've been working with this song on my C harp, and it just doesnt sound right. Maybe its because the two harps just make it sound different, but I'm not sure. For the intro i play 3b 3d 4d...3b 3d 4d 4b 3d 3b 3b 2d 2d. Is that basically right, or am I missing something. It would be great if you could lead me in the right direction. Thanks a lot.

  • I never use the 3b as a melody note, so get rid of it. I think you'll need to ask Jimileemusic--that's Jimi Lee himself--what we were doing.

  • This is great! So do you mean that you'd always use 2d under any circs? (Happy New Year, Mark, UK).

  • it's in the key of Bb

  • thank you for posting this, it was awesome!

  • what a damn Luck..My C harp is Just Broken..i dunno if i will be able to find a new C in the Music Shops

  • every time i hear these guys, makes this old guy want to throw his harp away! Good Stuff!! Thank you!

  • Adam, Word On the Street was my favorite album of the year.

  • very cool

  • *Great* playing and musicianship as usual, & five stars as usual!

  • the best damn live jam i've ever heard.... well may be not the best but it is certainly one of the best.... you guys are simply the best man.... keep rocking..... and merry christmas and a happy new year!!! ;)

  • It's a really great sound. Hope you guys do more with this.

  • 5:20 is awesome

  • Were the solos parts in the original song?

  • Heck no! This is our original interpretation of a non-harmonica song. It's Jimi's interpretation--he showed me the melody, then he figured out a harmony part.

  • fantastic :)

  • great tune. great playing.

    I love Jimi Lee's playing.

    I love Gussow's Playing.

I took several lessons with Jimi last month.

He is a great dude and a great teacher.

    thanks guys

  • I tried this myself and its very hard to do and you pull it off for the most part, very well done guys!

it shows that even a Master of the Harp can make fumble or two,and still come back kick it down to nice groove!

  • Hi, Adam! First comment to you ever. I love the tune, I love your feel of intonation, or whatever it is called technically (what's the key please? I'd love to jam with it). Apart from that, let me honestly tell you I owe you half the harp player I currently am. I may buy your transcriptions, your albums, I also may tip you, but what you're giving away is for us harmonica fans definitely priceless. Sincerely, your fortunate virtual-apprentice from the Basque Country, Kixki. Keep up the good work!

  • I tried playing this, and it sounds just right playing in Bb with my Eb harp. Try it and see how it sounds.

  • Actually scratch that. Nevermind the harp, but I'm pretty sure the song is in Gm.

  • The song is indeed in G minor. I was confused myself when I first took out harps just now and tried to remember what key I used. I used a C major harp, played cross with the 3 draw held down a half step for the minor 3rd. I'm not sure what harp Jimmy is playing, frankly. I believe he's using a minor tuned E-flat--the 3 draw tuned a half-step flat so he DOESN'T have to hold it down (bend it), because it's already bent. But I could be totally wrong on this.

  • The wisdom of Gussow prevails. I think you're right about this. Thanks a bunch.

  • Actually, on second thought, although I was definitely playing a C harp, he, too, may be playing a C harp--minor tuned, and starting from an unlikely note, like that (retuned) 3 draw. I'm not sure. His soloing, if I"m not wrong, suggests that he's playing cross harp. Big mystery. Email him! He's got a YouTube channel of his own.

  • you guys so great ! what a beautiful works!

  • GEIL!!! Too cool guys!!!

  • Eb's working for me...cool tune

  • wow, this was great!

  • Brilliant playing guys! love that tune.

    S.

  • Just superb.

  • Great. Thank you both.

  • Very Cool Riff....Fun watching you guys working it out....sounds awesome the two harps...harmonizing. Your book " Mister Satan's Apprentice " is a great read. It's cool to read your 70's, 1980's & 90's history of the Blues Harp In the Apple. I love that you created your own style...I have all your CD's and share them with many.

Dan Lynch's was so much fun. Thanks for Sharing & Keeping the blues Harp alive. Wow...somewhere a ten year old is going to keep the real blues harp alive. Thanks Again.

  • Wow good fun!! You left all the rehearsing and everything. We look like we're having a ball and ahh, yes we were indeed!! Good memories, good times! Thanks for posting...

  • That song was incredible. I think the best material comes when Jammin out. Hi Adam, my name is Steve and I have been following your stuff for a few months now and love what you do and how you do it. I found you as I was looking for some tips on playing the harp and very glad I stumbled upon your vids. Thank you and great, great song.

  • No, I'm playing a standard Marine Band. Key of F, maybe? I can't remember. I'm playing cross harp in whatever key we're playing in. I shoulda opened my hands and blasted out my notes louder; Jimi has such a fantastic bright sound.

  • Really Great video...Thanks Adam...

  • great song man, i was wondering if you new the song bad bad whiskey i think by the piano player Amos Milburn, well i have been studying a version by junior wells and buddy guy, the harp is simple raw hard blues, but i love it, i figured it out, but not the key of the harp, i guess i dont have that one, but anyway, i think it'll be a great eye opener for many harp players, good luck, as always, and thanks for being so committed to this thing

  • Gussow you sound pretty much influenced by Greg Zlap when you improvise

  • Actually, he was influenced by me. When I started playing the harp, he was three years old. When I started overblowing, in 1987, he was 16 years old. When I released my first overblow-filled album, in 1991, he'd only recently moved to Paris and started taking the harmonica seriously. I first heard his recordings in September--a handful of cuts, once; I made this video in October. I love what he does. But no: any influence, if there's any, is my influence on him. C'est moi, l'originateur.

  • So acording to that its kind of funny what I just said. I dont know what C'est moi, l'originateur means but well, I said it because u are not a jazz player and I havent heard u before playing that way, but I should worked out better.... Well anyway, nice playing Mr Gussow, I gotta say u did terrific playing ovr this song

  • It means that he's the genius behind his soulful funky style

  • My faux French is my way of saying, I am the source. I'm being tongue-in-cheek, since we all steal from each other. But no: much as I grooved to the few songs of Greg Szlap's that I've heard--and I DO like them, a lot--he hasn't had any influence on me. We're on parallel tracks, though. His live album is amazing stuff.

  • great soloing from th eboth of you guys!

  • friggin sweet. Never heard a harp duet. nice.

  • I liked this duoversion! It's also a really catchy song.

Adam, are you playing a B-flat Harp in this video?

  • I haven't played the song since and honestly can't remember. I was playing cross harp.

  • just jammed with you guys, good times...good times

  • Yeah man! This goes in my faves!

  • Thanks chaps. To think that you can have music of this quality in your kitchen. In my youth I have paid loads of money and heard worse at Wembley Stadium and I don't think that situation has improved over the decades. You should be given greater appreciation as two true masters of the art.

  • That was sweet I just wish you put up some tabs so I can play along.

  • nice. I really enjoyed that.

  • Ghe sbo...!

(in my regional, actually town dialect it is an expression meaning lots of things, among them a very positive feeling of appreciation; its litteral meaning is quite vulgar...but you now here in Venice it's like that!)

    You guy are kickass!

  • Very nice groove!

  • I guess this is how the pros do it. Great video. I had to grab my harp and play along, jamming with you guys. And though I ain't anywhere near your level it was inspirational. I've always thought that the best reason to play with a band is to get to make music with musician, who are better than you are. Makes you wanna improve your game.

So, thank you, both of you, for this. Made my day.

  • SWEET!!!

  • roockin!!

  • I like this one a lot :)

nice to see you guys doing your thing :)

    Cheers to ya all !

  • Truely outstanding!! Two masters doing what they do best, although two different styles of playing you compliment each other wonderfully.

  • Oh yeah nice. Children, Now THAT is umm, called ah MO-MOTHERFUKIN-JO :)

  • Nice playing and backup!

  • No, he's playing his own minor tuned harp in 2nd position. Gotcha!

  • Got me indeed! Haha, he make that himself? Or does he play a harp that's manufactured by for instance Lee Oskar? And is there even a difference between either one? I'm asking because I once owned a minor scale Lee Oskar, but I just couldn't figure out what to do with it. Then again, I could hardly play any 3rd position stuff at that time so I didn't know much about minor playing. maybe I should give it a go again?

  • I don't know any harp player who REALLY knows what other harp players are doing in the matter of adjusting their harps; it's a personal thing, and Jimi's personal thing, vis a vis creating and adjusting harps, is way beyond mine anyway. Write to him and ask. He has a YouTube channel.

  • Haha, OK! Well I know NOTHING of adjusting or creating harps, so I had no idea. Time to smarten up then, thanks for your replies!

  • Oh and Jimi's playing 3rd position, sweet! :)

  • Sounds really good, cool song :). Love the harmony part!

  • pretty good. I like Jimmi Lee's style.
