Just read the column, "Gimme 10, Practical Advice from a Pro Who Knows in Modern Drummer Magazine with Jeff Ballard (Jan 2010 page 18). Yup! This just shows, Ballard is one who knows. What a feeling. Great drummer. Great band!
I played with Mark in the early 90s, and he would transcribe Trane all day long, except when he was practicing, or on the bandstand. Hes also a really cool guy.
Id like to see you go up against turner and see who shows up who. In fact why dont you put your sax playing up on youtube and lets see your unairy emotional lines and then lets let the people compare. Peace and love.
music with balls lol anyway i have to disagree whole heartedly with you mark is has plenty of emotions you just have to let go of any preconcieved notion that you might harber in order to appreciate the music this guy is great matter of fact i am currently study with this guy
Ballard and Turner are going to be talked about in jazz for the next 50 years. Their music together is so modest and tasteful. I really love these guys. They make all music they touch sound so special.
Unfortunately that is the way jazz is: horizontal not vertical, just like in the job market. They move around and they're seem to be having fun. There are exceptions: Keith, Jack and Peacock to mention one. Stenson and Jorman like being together. Way back when we wanted Miles to keep Coltrane, Cannonball and Bill Evans. Did Miles do what we wanted? Hell no! He went and got Tony (the amazing Williams), Herbie and Wayne. That group became one of the greatest in the history of jazz, so go figure.
shit.. chris is huge

Mark's bustin' the rovner, it's amazing how open he sounds with it, I much prefer Francois Louis Ligatures. Major Props to Mr. Turner, though

this is so musical...I actually love the bass being so quiet, humming in the background.

did mark turner write this song?
holladayinnn 3 years ago
yes he did. A lot of the lines are derived from lennie tristano compositions however, most notable "background music" and "line up".

This comment has received too many negative votes show
turner plays the most airy, unemotional lines i have ever heard. Ballard is killing fo sho
