@Isleshire1 The first time this played to the batallions of the Austro-German army, the soldiers started clapping along. And since it has been tradition to clap along, and the conductor should conduct the audience.
Happens every year at Austria's New Year's Concert.
@Dan474834 It was no longer Austro-German, if you are referring to the Holy Roman Empire of the German People which ended in 1806. It was already the Austrian Empire. After 1867 it became the Dual Monarchy of the Austrian Empire and Kingdom of Hungary, or Austria-Hungary. It's a great tradition that the People join in. Radetzky was a Brigadier General at the battles of Aspern and Wagram in 1809 and won the victory of Novara against the Kingdom of (Piedmont ) Sardinia in 1849, 40 years later!
Normally I would agree with and the usual 'German' clapping annoys me, too. BUT......The Radetzky-March without the clapping at the New Year's concert would not be the Radetzky-March. Not clapping would be extremely impolited to Austria, Strauss and all who love Radetzky-March :) So - bear with us and enjoy it :)
@Isleshire1 normally it would be considered impolite also in Austria, but it's a tradition that the audience claps during the Radetzky-March at the New Year's Concert, that's why they do it. And I like it, it adds some life and comedy to the performance :)
@Isleshire1 It's just the tradition of this concert ! But it's not your fault if you don't understand it, you're American, you have no spirit and no culture...
@Isleshire1 With all due respect loosen up. In Europe it's impolite not to clap along to tracks like this one. It's the clapping from the crowd and the orchestra's music that combines so perfectly. Besides it is pretty hard to avoid clapping the tempo to this awesome track anyways.
@vstman Even in Europe, we do not clap along to tracks at classical music concerts. Vienna's New Year's Eve concert and this particular piece is the ONLY exception!
@LordHettrick i think he is mad because of the flowers in front of him. you cant see nothing of the orchestra in the first row. actually the only thing you can see 2 hours long is the conductors head^^

Lol, looking bck at all those crazy stuff the conductors did while conducting the Radetzky march, I can't wait til I see what "next" years conductor do.
Tjoah sowas nennt man noch Musik. Davon ab kann ich den sogar spielen ich liebe diesen Marsch! Also weg vom Rap hör mal ne Runde Klassik ^^ Ist echt geil kannst mir glauben^^
What is amazing about Barenboim is that he is one of the few conductors who understand the orchestra's capabilities and limitations. He knows a piece like Radetsky March does not require a strong conductor presence, and so he is able to pursue other forms of conducting such as entertaining the audience.
@ayuprnkcller The weak caring for the orchestra and strong attention to the audience is quite usual with the Marsch, but I have to admit this one is particularly emphasized and effective. I agree with you Baremboim is a great musician in general and conductor in particular.
@ayuprnkcller Actually that's a tradition at the New Year's Day Concert in Vienne. They do that every year no matter who the conducter is. =) But u are right he does an amazing job with entertaining the audience.
I tried to get there many times but it´s like this: you cannot buy a ticket, you can join the lottery that takes place every year from January to .. February I think. And if you´re lucky, you get picked! That prestigious the concert is. I hope I´ll get there finally some day :-)
he's acting like that, because he doesnt have to really conduct the orchestra, do u know how often they played this piece, i think they can play this by heart!!
They do this at every Vienna New Years Concert as a tradition, just look up "Radetzky March 2008" or 2007, 2006, 2005, any year. The audience always claps along and the conductor almost always directs them as well.
Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic on January 1, 2010 in January.
I wanted to purchase two tickets for 30 Eur.
In April Vienna Philharmonic sent me results of competition for the purchase of tickets and they said me that they are unable to offer me any tickets. :((((
I remember listening to a recording of a previous Neujarhskonzert, and Willi Boskovksy was saying "Happy New Year" in German, then French...then accidentally said "Happy Christmas" in English, before correcting himself. I really think there are few pieces or composers that exemplify an entire nation like this one...although Ein Deutches Requiem comes pretty close.
I so want to be there: the beautiful chandeliers, the wonderful music, the travel through centuries of music, the wondrous performances. It somehow doesn't fit into today's world, where few people stop to admire beauty in its simplest state.
It`s a tradition, that on the end of the NEW YEARS concert the RADETZKY MARCH is performed.
and its tradidion that the conducter takes the audiance into the "SHOW" and every year we are waiting for the special "SHOW" the condutor makes to GET the audience into the FINALE
Not that I'm very interested in classical music, but I saw this concert on TV and i just loved he way the conducter gets the audience into this "Radetzky Marsch", and it sounds so good! Fabulous!
Wunrerfull!!!!

Fabulous!
