Old Tibet had an air burial where the corpse was chopped up and tied out for scavenger birds to eat the pieces and spread the droppings. Make sense to me and JP.
My late sister played this song so often that my little 5 year old niece could sing it word for word, up to and including the closing line..."Send my mouth way down south and.....", I hate to admit it, but it was cutest thing you ever heard :-)
What I love about John Prine is that he tries, but he doesn't try too hard. He doesn't overdo any one song. He puts emotion into the songs and may tell a story about the song to his audience like it's a group of his good friends. Gotta love a man like Prine.
I have worked in the transplant field for 20 years and also play guitar. I stole a line from Joe Walsh when intoducing this song... and call it "an industrial love song."
When ever I play this song live, I introduce it by saying "I think this is a song about donating your body to science". John is my favorite song writer and I always liberally sprinkle a bunch of his songs in my live set. John is the guy that made me pick up a guitar and play!
It took my brother dying for me to listen to his favorite John Prine tune-Paraside for me to discover this man when I am 63,LOL,better late than never! You Go Mr. Prine-play that Life Music
Good for You. Once the Spirit has crossed over, why not use the remaining organs to prolong another life? I dont want anybody to get my Liver, Lungs, or Anus (hemmoroids) but my Heart is good, my 'willie' works, sometimes too well,...and I have an exceptional Colon. My Legs have delivered me from Incarceration so many times,....I should offer them on E-Bay! Once I am deep six, take what you need. But Bury Me with my John Prine Record Collection.
@1grain1infinitebeach Sorry about your brother , my brother of another mother...you listen to enough John Prine and you'll get to where you should be going in the first place. JP is just that good!
The folks who run the organ donation organizations and fundraising should use this sonto g for a promo for their cause. It is morbid now, and this would put a new face on it...a smile thinking that one has sent their knees to the needy...It would send organ donations through the roof. ..or, better, ro living people who might die without them.
great.

I've been doing this for 20 years, and like I say above introduce it with a stolen Joe Walsh line calling it "an industrial love song."
