  • Probably the best hurricane footage ever filmed..

  • i remember in the national geographic video cyclone you said the rain had been drivin into the walls through the stairs coming down the stairway. wasn't the 150mph wind hitting something at the bottom of the building?

  • The gust from 17:10 to 17:21 makes the hair on my neck and arms stand up...I've been through many hurricanes, and I will never forget that sound.

  • I survived Hugo and it changed my life; how I have missed the islands....

this blew me away hearing and remembering the sound of WiND.... thanks for sharing .

  • my parents were in this.

  • I still remember this happening, I watched through my window as debris and mini tornadoes passed through my front yard. This storm is my earliest childhood memory, I was almost 3 years old when this happened.

  • I HAVE GEORGE 2 LOL

  • I was in St. Croix for it, went room to room as they were being taken away. Thanks for being brave and recording it as it happened.

  • crazy

  • Wow... I left PR the month before this happened I was 12 yrs old.... Then I returned to PR right before Andrew hit Florida... For some reason I always get to skip hurricanes... But this was an awesome video!!!

  • i was only 6 yrs old at the time but my parents & i didnt live in pr. but the rest of the fam did :(

  • damn....i was born the day hurricane hugo hit..lol....=\

  • The long version is better IMO.because you get the full appreciation of the event as it unfolds. The gradual increase in windspeed lets you see just how strong it gets and every second of the strongest wind is important for the full effect.. The difference in quality between the two versions is not significant enough to really matter. This vodeo rocks. It is the best footage I have ever seen. Thanks for posting it.

  • @cape6000jkg Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video... Hugo was an absolutely unbelievable experience. When I originally posted this video, YouTube allowed "director" accounts to upload clips of any length. Unfortunately, by the time I had the remastered version, they had restricted all video uploads to ten minutes or less. Thanks again for the comment!

  • wow yo tenia 4 añitos para ese entonces fue horrble for me and my family

  • Awesome video! i remember being at home and watching this unfold through an area of my bedroom window that was not covered.

  • i was 2yrs old so i dont remember anything about it :(

  • I remember very well that days...I was totally scared. My family and myself left our house in Carolina to stay at other family more secure house in Trujillo Alto. The worse thing I remember was the sound of the terrible force winds. It sound like a large scream, instead of wind. It was so creepy. Thanks for the video. I couldn't see the eyewall...your capture was great!

Hoy tengo 30anos y todavia me acuerdo como si fuese ayer...I love u Puerto Rico.

  • wow i was 5 living in Bayamon

  • i was only 1yr so i dnt remember

  • i was so scared that day

  • I have a year when Hurricane Hugo step

  • excelente video.

  • Im gonna cry now i'll never forget this day I call this the great storm in puerto rico of 1989 and I also call this the world recored great storm of 1989

  • i will neva forget that day i cried soo much with my mom .. i was soooo scared...

Mere pai...

  • Please!! Use English correctly. These are two different statements. Your message should have read: "English, please!! People, please, you are USA citizens.

  • Yeah, indyfan22k! Are you and American citizen? Isn't that ironic? Learn to speak your native language (English? I doubt) correctly first and then you will have the standing to demand from others to speak English.

  • americans have no native language they speak a european language.

  • @elquijote007 For you if you read this, and for those that, at least check their history and our history.

  • The Animals Go Everywhere When The Weathers Like That In P.R

  • Hello, thank you very much for this footage. I remember I was 7 years old when it happened but I was living in the northwest part of the island, so it wasnt that intense.

  • Puerto Rico is in the Caribbean and is part of the American Continent. It's been a territory ( more like a colony) of the USA since 1898. All Puerto Ricans are American citizens by birth, though they don't vote in the Presidential elections.

  • hey vmax135 are you from purtorico or amerca?

  • SNIFF SNIFF

  • Great footage!

  • Thanks so much! I recently uploaded a much higher quality (and shorter) version here on YouTube. It's linked in both the video and the video response areas above.

  • I cant beleive I watched this video. I was in Fajardo at the time of HUGO locked up in the house with my family and had a 3 year old and 7 month old twins at the time. Thanks GOD we didnt suffer like some of our neighbors and we had little damage to our home. Thanks to FEMA we got the house back in order after 2 years

  • George was bad, Hortense was too wet, marilyn was too little, BUT HUGO WAS SO NASTY nobody gonna forget this one... LO QUE HUGO SE LLEVO!! ( What HUGO BLOWs)

  • What Hugo took...is a better translation..

    o What Hugo blew...

  • really cool video.

  • Nice... if only we had HD video back in 89... still amazing.

  • Thanks, Billy! Yeah... having an HD video camera for Hugo would have been incredible! That said, the quality of this video is much, much better than what is seen in this clip. Back when I uploaded it, YouTube had a much smaller file size restriction which forced me to highly compress the video file to meet their criteria. Since then I've actually completely re-mastered the Hugo footage and have rendered a new upscaled version in HD... so, look for a shorter, much higher quality clip soon.

  • how did u uploaded a 28 minute video? i thought it was only 10 minutes? by the way,i hated hugo so much.though i didnt had to go to school, but my house got mess up.

  • I was in St. Croix at the time when the eye went over at Cat 5 much worse than this. The gusts peaked at 200 mph and the sound was like a freight train with a low picthed deep humming sound that would cause tremors. Those were the gusts. Hugo moved around 8 mph through the island and lasted over 9 hours before it moved away. The US Marines had to come in declaring martial law/curfew for 4 months. If it weren't for Blue Mountain in St. Croix, you would have filmed a CAT5+ Hugo[=

  • 15:04 thats what a bad hurricane sounds like. Same sounds from Ike just not that loud

  • Well done Mike Laca. Geat vid!! any other hurricane footage you can share?

  • i really love hurricanes

  • it looks like a man outside on 9.39

  • Pretty good video you uploaded.

  • One of the best eyewall videos ever, up there with Omar, Charley, and a few others

  • Mike, you once told me that there was one particular gust that occured when you were in the hallway that you thought may have been in the 170mph+ range. Do you know where that gust is in this film, if it is included?

  • Hi Max. The gust I was referencing is located between 17:13 and 17:29 in this clip. Jim, Andy and I are in the stairwell and there was a very sharp increase in the wind speed during those 15 seconds(when the wind noise jumps from the more constant wail, to the high-pitched screeching sound). Though it's possible higher gusts occurred at other times, this was the highest gust I can remember during the eyewall.

  • I was in Rio Grande when it hit and it was the worst Hurricane ive been in especially when the eye wall came in you could see the sun and all the sudden .... Horror again.....great video..

  • Cool I went go el ELYunque rain forest and Rio Grande Last week for spring break.

  • Excellent footage indeed. I was 10 when Hurricane Hugo happened. I remember watching it on the Weather Channel, following it from the central Atlantic, to Guadaloupe, to Puerto Rico, missing the Bahamas, and then smashing into South Carolina. This was my first major hurricane to track, and one of the most memorable. I have been fascinated by these storms ever since.

  • I was 5 years old when this happened I can still remember it like it was yersterday but despite the force of the storm the structural integrity of the houses made out of concrete did withstand the inmense force. Now I live in F.L. and I wonder why people here still prefer the use of gibson board & plywood when desining their homes in a hurricane friendly zone. Thanks for the video its a great documentation.

  • OMG I remember seen a catt fly by my house in the hurricane i was in PR my home

  • I passed the whole Hurrcane in a building in Condado near to where you were filming It was an incredible expirence ,we survived also on the stairs of the building with my wife and two boys

Thank for recording what most people havent seen here in P.R.

  • yeah! hear the sound of the wind!!!! i remember that sound...i was 14 years old.

  • Eso es peor que un temblor.

  • Very impressive Hurricane Hugo, Michael; a real machine with endless strength.. These hurricanes of the 80's are never forgotten.

  • hurricane hugo was in the 90's

  • After Hugo of 1989, the name was eliminated. This was the last Hugo, the devastator. Greetings :)

  • I was 2 when Hugo hit Charleston a few days after this video was taken. I live in Moncks Corner which is about 30 mins away from Charleston. I dont remember alot from it but I have some very vivid memories that have been stuck in my mind since then that I will never ever forget.

  • ok man...this is so cool!!You just captured the day I was born!!!!!wow!!september 18,1989,exactly I'm 19 now!! for the first time in my live I saw what happened that day!! thanks man. God bless you!!!

By the way my grandfather put me a nickname after that"Hugo" hahaha What you think about that?

  • Fucking Shit! that acm i luv hurricanes!!!

  • WOW!

  • HHHOLLY CRAP~!!!

  • Incredible an so real. That wind sounded like a screaming child. How horrible and scary that most have been for all those people in Puerto Rico. God help them all!!.

  • Hi?

  • I was living in new york at the time and I remember calling my Mom and there was no answer. I was scared thinking that my Mothers house didn't make it, then the call went thru and my mother was ok.

  • i was 11 no water light in two months (FOR HUMACAO)

  • I was 15 when it hit our area, Las Piedras. I remember dad taking us out to see how the sea birds passed our house searching protection. We were with all the family and my mom's sister. The water came in trough the electric plugs in the wall. We were without water for two weeks and without light for one month. El Yunque was like elrapto says, like it was badly burned and all the houses were covered in leaves plastered to the wall.

  • I was 5 when this one hit us in PR. I only remember pieces of it, though, not the full devastation it caused.

  • A este huracan no lo midieron bien. This hurricane was stronger than the Weather Channel said.

  • I lived in Isla Verde at the time. The condo next door the windows blew out and the furniture right behind it.After the whole ordeal there was no electricity, water etc.A beautiful flamboyan tree that was near Lloren torrens came down on La Baldorioty. When I saw the devastation I sat on the sidewalk to cry.I had never in my life gone through anything like this. I was sedated the rest of the day.next day we emptied our water bed for bathing and use the bathroom.I can survive anything now.God bless

  • The sound is what gives me the creeps. This is one hell of a video!

  • I was 6 and we lived in Charleston, SC. I remember the sound of the wind and hearing the trees snap all over the place. I also remember being really upset that the power was out, including my nightlight. I was afraid of the dark. We lost power for two weeks. It was unbelievable even at six years old. Everything was destroyed and I mean, everything!

  • wow...I have always wanted to see what hugo looked like. I was born in 1987. so I was only like 2ish. my mother said I slept through it. I lived in NC. and I don't know where it hit the worst at.

  • This was my first and last hurricane in PR. I was 14 and I remember my mom and I trying to hold the awning down through my grandmother's broken window so the wind adn the flying aluminum signs wouldnt hit it. It was so scary...

  • I was 7 years old living in La Villa De Torimar (Guaynabo) when I went through this hurricane. My parents had me sleep in heir romm the night before and I really didn't understand why. Next morning I woke up to the sound of srong whistling winds, it was scary. Later that day I was watching TV with my sisters when suddendly a Huge Glass Wall in our house exploded. The wind was so loud... My sisters and I ran to our rooms but it was so hard to close the doors. The hurricane lasted all day.

  • wow! O_O! that was intense... great video.

I have scattered memories of hugo...I was 4 and living in yabucoa... palm trees moving like that are the strongest memories, hehe. weird...

  • I was born 20 days after that. My mom says that it was the most horrible experience she passed. The part were the person is in the building is super freaky!!!

  • I had 4 years and I remembear clearly... it give me the creeps! I was horrible! For me as a child...

  • thats one impresive video! thanks from HATILLO, PUERTO RICO

  • When the guy in this video said "the pressure's too strong" what he meant by that was if you did not try to swallow saliva every 15 seconds or so, your ears would pop! You always had that popping sound when you would swallow and if you went past 15 seconds and you tried to swallow the pop in your ear drumps was extremely painful because of the pressure.

  • Commerical bulding all over the place could be seen with spray paint on them "You loot I shoot" "Looters will be shot on sight" The Arab supermarket owners would sit on roof tops with machine guns. One man who tried to go in & loot anyways got shot right between the eyes. At night you could hear gun fights with U.S. troops and prisoners. We lived like cavemen for 3-4 months till power & water was restored. It was nothing I will ever want to experience again.

  • I was in St. Croix at the time & the eye went right over the island. Most powerful event of my life. The island looked like it got a direct hit from a nuclear bomb. Not a leaf could be found on trees. All structures were severely damaged or destroyed. Americans were swimming out to coast guard ships to escape. Their homes were being taken island natives. Prisoners escaped. The police was looting. U.S. troops came in and declared martial law for almost 3 months because lawlessness was the rule.

  • my mom was in hugo when it hit all thw way inland in Camden, SC. It was still a Cat.3 too! they had a 120ft tree on their house. and during the hurricane, the whole house was shaking. nobody was prepared inland because they thought it wouldnt hit inland...man they were wrong!

  • The house shaking is something you get used to after a while. All you can do is pray that the gusts that follow don't finish the job. The whistling sound is one thing but when the gusts would come you would hear a deep angry groan. That was the scary sound.

  • I remember hearing about Hurricane Hugo!

  • My grandpa had a country house about 20 minutes from El Yunque. There was a large metal shed in the property, where he kept his lawn mower, some tools and stuff like that. The wind was so strong, that we found the shed some half mile away on the side of a hill. The thing did not even look like a shed; it looked more like a giant accordion. We never found the contents of the shed...

  • wow....

before georges the sky was in orange scary....

  • i remember hugo, i was 17 at the time. i slept through the whole storm. i live in chester sc, abot 3 hours from the coast and we still got hit by it. when i woke up the day after and went outside, i was speechless. trees were everywhere, houses were torn apart.

  • Me too, lived on Meadowbrook rd near the state park. I was 9 and slept through the entire thing. We had trees down everywhere.

They are looking at Ike to a Hugo if it hits Charleston (where I am now).

  • i have alot of family that live in charleston, on johns island. they didn't evacuate when hugo came through. hopefully they will get to safety if ike comes close to them. hopefully you will too. good luck!

  • Just insane. I was 12 when Hugo came through Charlotte and I remember every second. It is the reason I LOVE (and hate of course) hurricanes now. Been through 7 more on purpose now and am heading down for Hanna. She will be nothing compared to Hugo though.

  • the worst of it was THE NOISE !!!!THE WIND SOUNDED LIKE A TRAIN AND HOWLNG AND THE SAME TIME I WAS THERE AND MY DOOR WAS SHAKKEN DO BAD THAT I THOUGHT IT WAS GONNA FLY OFF !!!!!! WE WERE UNDER OUR BEDS ..PUT IT THAT WAY....!!!!

  • I was here for hugo as well. My bday is Sept 20, I was turning 5, I didnt celebrate till oct. We stayed. We lived in Summerville and had about 13 ppl in our hallway of a one story 3bed home. Waiting the storm out is prob one of the most vivid memories I have from that age (other than the snow we got that following Christmas.) And yea Hugo was most def worse than George. PS, I have a really bad feeling abt Hurriane season this year, it might not be hanna, but a bad feeling is a bad feeling.

  • i was in summerville sc when it hit i was 2 but i remember it soo vividly..now just hopin hanna isnt as bad

  • i do remember Hugo...and it was worse than Georges

  • I live in Charlotte NC and I remember when it hit here. It hit in the middle of the night and I awoke to the howling winds and trees falling in my backyard.

  • What building of Puerto Rico was this??

  • Yup around 20:24 when you can hear the howling is what it sounded like that night in Myrtle Beach South Carolina,as it gained strength just prior.I was in a Church, laying on a bench and the hanging lights were titled 45 degrees and they stayed angled.I said my Blessing and went to sleep.

  • Everyone here saying Georges was stronger than Hugo clearly didn't experienced Hugo or was to young to remember it. Hugo literally shred the island to pieces, the devastation it left behind was unbelievable. I was 6 years old when hugo hit but i remember clearly.

  • You are rigth. Hugo was worst. George bring more water but Hugo was the strongest Huracane I have ever experienced. I live in PR
