Both Mello and Matt die January 26, 2010 in the manga, which should be considered the official canon -- before the anime -- because it was made first and directly written by Tsugumi Ohba.
I think Death Note killed off all of the most awesome characters it had (Light DEFINITELY does not count in this) I mean, really, L, Mello, Matt...it seemed like when I like someone in Death Note, they were destined to die.

I like to imagine Light dying, going to this place, and then getting the crap kiced out of him. This includes L, Mello, and Matt, of course (And maybe Watari can get in on the action? I mean, he is pretty handy with a gun...and he doesn't get nearly enough love. That old dude is mad awesome.) That idea always makes me feel better.
...God this is sad. The music in the background, considering it's played at the ending of Death Note as well, makes me tear up. Poor Mello and Matt... At least Near acknowledges what Mello did in the end, even if Matt is not mentioned.

They weren't cops, they were Takada's bodyguards. But I agree, I didn't believe that they had just shot him like that. When I first saw it, I was screaming in my head: "IT'S FAKE BLOOD. IT'S FAKE. HE'S WEARING A BULLET-PROOF VEST. I JUST KNOW IT. D:" Mello's death added with Matt's made me cry for way longer than fictional characters needed.
Me too I cried much longer than I should have...I few hours later I couldent get the picture of Matt's death outta my head it was so sad he was my fav along with Mello...

Yeah; I remembered that at the end of the day that Kira was dead... for some reason, following the anime seems traitorous because the manga was written first... but they'll still die in the end. :(

When I found out that Mello had died, instead of LAUGHING IN KIRA'S DYING FACE like I planned too, I was sobbing over the fact that without Mello & Matt & L, Near would be NOTHING, and he knew it. I had watched the episoded all together too, becuse I watch online. *sob* MELLO!!!! I'll think of chu whenever I get chocolate.... WAIT! If Mello dies on 1-26-10,, and he hasn't died yet... I think Death Note killed off all of the most awesome characters it had (Light DEFINITELY does not count in this) I mean, really, L, Mello, Matt...it seemed like when I like someone in Death Note, they were destined to die.
All I know is, I'm going to be doing some serious mourning on January 26th, 2010. I think I'll literally cry on that day. It's going to be, like, the worst day EVER.

That's what I hoped, until I read the last rule of the Death Note in the manga. Everyone goes to the same place. "Nothingness" :'-(
I like to imagine Light dying, going to this place, and then getting the crap kiced out of him. This includes L, Mello, and Matt, of course (And maybe Watari can get in on the action? I mean, he is pretty handy with a gun...and he doesn't get nearly enough love. That old dude is mad awesome.) That idea always makes me feel better.

...God this is sad. The music in the background, considering it's played at the ending of Death Note as well, makes me tear up. Poor Mello and Matt... At least Near acknowledges what Mello did in the end, even if Matt is not mentioned.
These two will remain my favorite characters of all all-time for the rest of my life. <3

They weren't cops, they were Takada's bodyguards. But I agree, I didn't believe that they had just shot him like that. When I first saw it, I was screaming in my head: "IT'S FAKE BLOOD. IT'S FAKE. HE'S WEARING A BULLET-PROOF VEST. I JUST KNOW IT. D:" Mello's death added with Matt's made me cry for way longer than fictional characters needed.
