Raccoons are like having a fulltime 2 to 3 yr old, if you can plan on giving lots of attention, adjusting your lifestyle, they can make good pets. pfff, strike that, they can be great friends. If you find one when its young, and I state find, not go searching for, you may have just received a blessing!

I used to trap and kill raccoons on my property but after watching these videos i started putting them in a box after i trap them and bring them 5 miles down the road from my property and release them
One of my friends rescued an abandoned coon and he was kind like a dog and cat mixed together with the way he acted. He also had a thing for high heels. If he saw them, he'd run over to whup up on 'em but if you knelt down so your skirt hid them, he'd run all around trying to find them. He was hilarious! That coon lived to a ripe old age and was huge! Sweetest guy around though. Never bothered anybody.

Wow why in the hell first of all you didn't cage her, while you looked for a refuge to take her to, and secondly you must have the worst vet in the known universe if he/she/it didn't cage her until a refuge could be found. Third raccoons are one the quickiest animals to revert back to the wild, you could have taken her back to the wild, if released in an appropriate spot in early summer, she had a chance to survive the few months she needed to revert back. There is no bigger form of conservation action than the practice of controlled hunting and use of the wildlife as a resource. Anytime an animal has no monetary value, the species suffers. Where do you think the majority of funding for wildlife preservation comes from? It comes from hunters and sportsman through the sale of hunting licenses and special permits.

OMG..You killed your raccoon! I had a female and when she went into her heat cycle she was cranking, so we had to watch what we did around her. I gave her extra busy toys during that time. But, she did go back to the gentle girl that we knew and loved. Coons have a great innate sense to survive, so if you would have let her go, and maybe placed some food outside for awhile, she would have made it. What a waste.....

They are wild, so you should have known they "get a lil out of hand." But what do you do? I have raised coons my whole life and have a 3 and a 9 year old female and i can tell you now that there is a very good reason this female started acting this way, She was comming in to heat. If the woman lived in the country and could of let the coon go, the coon would of went out and gotten bred and got bred and then came back and been back 2 her some old self. Mine came back and although have found their own den trees 2 live in behind the house, come home everyday for food and love.

She didn't kill her, she put her to sleep because she couldnt just let her go to the wild because she wouldn't know how to fend for herself and would probably die in the wild slowly and more painfully then were as when she is put donw, she cant feel anything.

I'm sorry to tell you that you killed your raccoon needlessly. All you had to do was to get her spade at an experienced vet . When Violet was a year or so, she went into "heat" (meaning that she was looking for a boyfriend). This makes an otherwise loving and sweet raccoon kind of crazy and mean while it lasts. Once it's over in a few weeks, she would have returned to normal; but if she didn't breed she would have developed piometra and would have died from this unless you had her fixed .
@jlwvdvalk1 uuuhhhmmm...raccoons don't always find mates in the wild, they don't 'develop piometra' if they don't breed the first chance they get. That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my life.
2 maybe 3 years...they are usually victim to distemper...yet people love to think of them as rabid (same stats with skunks) They can live much much longer with the proper care in captivity (most people fall into the feeding too much trap :)
I am really sorry for what happen, I want one no matter what, today I set a trap on a zone that I have seen a lots of racoons on the road, hope to catch a baby or at least a pregnant female to keep it till have babys and when they get big enough let them go and keep the cutest one, I have a 5 year old cat, a 3 years cat 2 two years cats a 5 month and a 3 month old kittens and a 3y pitbull but I am really lonely and my animals make me feel good happy and spetial because they really love me.....
PLEASE don't do this; wild animals belong in the wild. Many people end up hurting or killing their wild animals because they don't know enough about how to take care of them - like Violet's humans - who killed her unnecessarily because they didn't understand her developmental stages. Once you raise a raccoon with dogs and cats they can NEVER live in the wild again - they will get ripped apart by coon hounds or killed by people who think they have rabies because they are too friendly.

Wild exotics take a LOT of responsibility and knowledge. a lot moreso than a cat or dog. You wouldn't have any idea how to care for them

I do work with wildlife rehab in FL and I can tell you how hard it is to love and lose them, either in death or releasing them with they are old enough. I have raised about 20 25 babies and it is truly love!!! Bless you and sorry that you had to make that hard choice.

You did the right thing... if Violet had bitten one of the mean people the tides would turn and they would have an immediate change of heart. Violet lived the best life an abandon wild animal infant could live. No where in life is it said that it is suppose to be fair. Violet looks down from heaven with love and blessings for you.

That is so sad. I Know a decision like that can never be easy. All females become quite vicious when close to or in heat. If they are fixed it is not as bad. It does last about three or four months as far as I know. People who have them as pets in Florida actually dedicate an entire room for them for this purpose they are not social during mating season.

ive had two raccoons . very hard animals to make "pets" . the learning curve is very short. they are dangerous . i love and miss mine , but will never have another. they can get worms that eat humans brains. i hope that is enough to scare people from keeping them at home. 95 percent of raccoons kept in captivity die before they reach natural death. i had 1 in a million , MIKO, the greatest -but he was more than a handful. i lost both of them.

After a year and when there's the mating season (spring) female raccoons will become vicious.Always remember that!When the mating season is over, they will be your cute little pet again.With males it's different.

I think maybe she could have had distemper? Some vets in the states will treat pet Raccoons with distemper and rabies vaccines like they would any other animal. Sorry to hear bout having to do what you did. They can be a handful and they also can win your heart in One second flat. She would have never made it on her own at that age and usually the rangers will not help them if they are too full with other animals. The song is sad tho...sorry for your loss.

His name was Banjo and he was one of the best things that ever happened to me. It was amazing to see him grow and get smarter everyday. The bigger he got the more he wanted to get into stuff!lol

I rescued a raccoon back when I was thirteen years old. As soon as he was weaned I took him out with me and taught him what a raccoon needed to survive! He never spent one day in a cage, and he was my friend, not my pet!

I remember I once wanted a pet raccoon when I was younger because I thought that it'd make a great companion. That is until my parents told me the true but harsh reality surrounding these animals. Its common knowledge that raccoons have never made good pets in the past, and they probably never will. It's hard to accept. But its something that we must deal with as human beings.

One of my friends rescued an abandoned coon and he was kind like a dog and cat mixed together with the way he acted. He also had a thing for high heels. If he saw them, he'd run over to whup up on 'em but if you knelt down so your skirt hid them, he'd run all around trying to find them. He was hilarious! That coon lived to a ripe old age and was huge! Sweetest guy around though. Never bothered anybody.

Wow why in the hell first of all you didn't cage her, while you looked for a refuge to take her to, and secondly you must have the worst vet in the known universe if he/she/it didn't cage her until a refuge could be found. Third raccoons are one the quickiest animals to revert back to the wild, you could have taken her back to the wild, if released in an appropriate spot in early summer, she had a chance to survive the few months she needed to revert back. You are fucking cruel and heartless.

There is no bigger form of conservation action than the practice of controlled hunting and use of the wildlife as a resource. Anytime an animal has no monetary value, the species suffers. Where do you think the majority of funding for wildlife preservation comes from? It comes from hunters and sportsman through the sale of hunting licenses and special permits.

OMG..You killed your raccoon! I had a female and when she went into her heat cycle she was cranking, so we had to watch what we did around her. I gave her extra busy toys during that time. But, she did go back to the gentle girl that we knew and loved. Coons have a great innate sense to survive, so if you would have let her go, and maybe placed some food outside for awhile, she would have made it. What a waste.....

I have raised coons my whole life and have a 3 and a 9 year old female and i can tell you now that there is a very good reason this female started acting this way, She was comming in to heat. If the woman lived in the country and could of let the coon go, the coon would of went out and gotten bred and got bred and then came back and been back 2 her some old self. Mine came back and although have found their own den trees 2 live in behind the house, come home everyday for food and love.

I'm sorry to tell you that you killed your raccoon needlessly. All you had to do was to get her spade at an experienced vet . When Violet was a year or so, she went into "heat" (meaning that she was looking for a boyfriend). This makes an otherwise loving and sweet raccoon kind of crazy and mean while it lasts. Once it's over in a few weeks, she would have returned to normal; but if she didn't breed she would have developed piometra and would have died from this unless you had her fixed .

I am really sorry for what happen, I want one no matter what, today I set a trap on a zone that I have seen a lots of racoons on the road, hope to catch a baby or at least a pregnant female to keep it till have babys and when they get big enough let them go and keep the cutest one, I have a 5 year old cat, a 3 years cat 2 two years cats a 5 month and a 3 month old kittens and a 3y pitbull but I am really lonely and my animals make me feel good happy and spetial because they really love me.....

PLEASE don't do this; wild animals belong in the wild. Many people end up hurting or killing their wild animals because they don't know enough about how to take care of them - like Violet's humans - who killed her unnecessarily because they didn't understand her developmental stages. Once you raise a raccoon with dogs and cats they can NEVER live in the wild again - they will get ripped apart by coon hounds or killed by people who think they have rabies because they are too friendly.

I do work with wildlife rehab in FL and I can tell you how hard it is to love and lose them, either in death or releasing them with they are old enough. I have raised about 20 25 babies and it is truly love!!! Bless you and sorry that you had to make that hard choice.

You did the right thing, you rescued a fellow soul in dire need and to the best of your ability and with a loving heart and to the best of what you knew, you tried to make it's life better. Had you not picked it up it would've become roadkill, and better than half the people or so in the US would've run over the precious little thing and thought it sport. God bless you!

That is so sad. I Know a decision like that can never be easy. All females become quite vicious when close to or in heat. If they are fixed it is not as bad. It does last about three or four months as far as I know. People who have them as pets in Florida actually dedicate an entire room for them for this purpose they are not social during mating season.
Glad you were able to have her for the time you did and she certainly had a good life with you The life span of a wild racoon is very short.

ive had two raccoons . very hard animals to make "pets" . the learning curve is very short. they are dangerous . i love and miss mine , but will never have another. they can get worms that eat humans brains. i hope that is enough to scare people from keeping them at home. 95 percent of raccoons kept in captivity die before they reach natural death. i had 1 in a million , MIKO, the greatest -but he was more than a handful. i lost both of them.

Its illegal to keep a wild animal,so you should have contacted a rehabilitator,but you wanted to have fun with it until the game got rough because it wanted to have its own babies.

But you should read more about raccoons in the future before rescuing one again.
After a year and when there's the mating season (spring) female raccoons will become vicious.Always remember that!When the mating season is over, they will be your cute little pet again.With males it's different.

You can also try to avoid your female Raccoons bad moods in mating season by giving her a place where she can be completely alone.
A Place where no human goes to - not even to clean.
Females get often angry because they search a place where they can raise their kids and defend this place "with their lives"
And if they dont find a place where they can retreat, they say "thats my house, i want to raise my children - go away, all of you!"
And if you dont go, they can become aggressive...

I think maybe she could have had distemper? Some vets in the states will treat pet Raccoons with distemper and rabies vaccines like they would any other animal. Sorry to hear bout having to do what you did. They can be a handful and they also can win your heart in One second flat. She would have never made it on her own at that age and usually the rangers will not help them if they are too full with other animals. The song is sad tho...sorry for your loss.

thank you somethingcoolxox, people do not understand. violet was so young that she was helpless. her eyes and ears wasnt even open yet and the mother was no where to be found and we couldnt of left violet there hopeless and ik damned well if some of you ppl found a lil hopeless baby animal abandoned you would pick it and help it, its the right thing to do. i magine alot of animals die that way evryday(abandoned and hopeless) and having a wild animal is an awesome experience. they are so cute.

Your video almost made me cry! My dad found a baby raccoon abandoned in someones backyard and he was within hours of dieing. So we took him.
His name was Banjo and he was one of the best things that ever happened to me. It was amazing to see him grow and get smarter everyday. The bigger he got the more he wanted to get into stuff!lol
Sadly we had to release him.
I will never forget my Baby Banjo.....Never.

@TWAincorperated OMG..You killed your raccoon! I had a female and when she went into her heat cycle she was cranking, so we had to watch what we did around her. I gave her extra busy toys during that time. But, she did go back to the gentle girl that we knew and loved. Coons have a great innate sense to survive, so if you would have let her go, and maybe placed some food outside for awhile, she would have made it. What a waste.....

look people, that BABY raccon would have died on that road if they didnt take it... people r saying, o u should of left it there, the mom im geussing was long gone people, because it would of attack them when they tried to take it. So would u rather it die on a cold dark street by a car? or by hunger? or with a loving family? hope i made my point....

we caught a baby raccoon in the attic and when he climbed up the cabinet and opened a new box of cereal we new he could find food for himself so we let it go

I rescued a raccoon back when I was thirteen years old. As soon as he was weaned I took him out with me and taught him what a raccoon needed to survive! He never spent one day in a cage, and he was my friend, not my pet!
He was fifteen years old when he died in his sleep in the nest he made for himself in the attic of my parents house.
You took a wild animal out of the wild, and killed it when it became inconvenient!

i had a pet rat nameed bell. we loved her like a person would love their dog, but she caught a tumor that got so big she could not move. i could not doit myself so a family friend did it for us. it hurt a lot more than i thought it would, but i'm happy she is not in pain anymore. T_T

I remember I once wanted a pet raccoon when I was younger because I thought that it'd make a great companion. That is until my parents told me the true but harsh reality surrounding these animals. Its common knowledge that raccoons have never made good pets in the past, and they probably never will. It's hard to accept. But its something that we must deal with as human beings.
