  • It also protects the launch pad and surrounding structures from damage from the over pressure blast of the engines and Solid Rocket boosters.

  • This is how Chuck Norris takes a shower.

  • @7T1RT and it doesnt wash his hairpiece off? the really is a bad ass

  • What if they used ass-water instead?

  • I know what it does, but why.. to protect peoples ears, or to protect the shuttle and launcher from the concussion..

  • @Burnz2much The water system is designed to protect the Shuttle and its payloads from any damage that may occur from acoustical energy reflected from the Mobile Launcher Platform (MLP) during launch. The system was first installed at the pad when reflective energy from the top of the Mobile Launch Platform was causing minor damage to thermal curtains on the SRBs and putting stress on the wings. After adding the system, the sound pressure was reduced by half.

  • @noxious890 So the latter, thanks for the reply.

  • @Burnz2much to protect shuttle and launcher and crew's ears. Other people are far enough so they can't be harmed. :)

  • @Burnz2much you do know they have this awesome website that can answer all your questions much faster then waiting for a response on a comment in youtube. it's called Google.

  • @mnagmobile You know I don't care enough to do that, It doesn't provide the chance to respond to douche bags.

  • Some sprinkler system. Biggest shrub heads I've ever seen.

  • @upajos

Do you even know what the sound supression water system is made for?????

  • @predatortheme Of course. When I'm not answering questions from amateurs with no sense of humor like you, in real life I'm a professional engineer.

  • Well then why are you acting like a retard?. engineer or not, doesnt make you any special then the rest here. your still a retard that you have to use your job as an argument.

  • @predatortheme You don't know me and you have no cause to be calling me or anyone else on YouTube names.

  • how does water dampen the sound?

    wow, no pun intended haha

  • @andrewnonymous The water simply absorbs the sound waves. Think of it as listening to a radio underwater. You could imagine that the sound from the radio would be muffled and quieter underwater. Same general idea here.

During a lunch, the vast majority of the "smoke" generated from a launch is actually steam once the boosters start to boil the water from the sound suppression system.

  • Impressive. The Sound Suppression System holds 1.2 million litres. At full flow, it can empty in 20 seconds.

  • From the beginning, it sounds as if someone had washed the toilet!

  • Very cool video. Thank you for posting it. Does anyone know when and/or why this water system test occurred?

  • The water system test was for the Ares I-X rocket. It suppresses the sound of the booster engine. It was conducted on early of 2009.
