for the acoustic intro, are you muting the "in-between" string when you strum, you know, when the two notes are separated by a string like the A and G strings? I always finger picked the intro for this reason and can't figure out how you are strumming it and not hitting the open string?

use the 2nd finger or the 1st to gently touch the 4th string and mute it.
