I live in zone 5 and I just planted a clematis last July. I had killed 2 others before this one. I got it in a bargain bin at a grocery store. I've never pruned it or have done anything special and it's grown and grown, and given such beautiful blossoms right into fall. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of it. Recently I bought a florida sieboldii one, so I hope I can keep it going. =)
if you have a picture of it you could send it to Linda at the Rogerson site and she might be able to tell you the variety. Glad you found one that works for you...
Lindas garden is private and located in Portland Oregon. She does open it up to visitors a couple of times a year. You should check out the Rogerson Clematis Collection site. He was truely a great collector! Be looking for another story in a couple of weeks from Raymond Evison about his new introductions of clematis.
Thanks, this was really helpful! The Clematis is among my favourite plants!

I didn't even think of that. Thanks for suggesting that!

Thanks for posting, GardenGuy! I wonder, do you know where this garden is located? They mentioned having a lovely long growing period?
