Nice demo! Ive been running 9.10 on a Dell 1.4ghz 2GB RAM netbook. Im really starting to like Ubuntu so I threw together an old AthlonXP 3000+ w/ 1GB RAM and a Radeon 9800 256MB. The netbook video is a 44mhz chip that simply cant keep up. I will try this Docky thing, and check out some more demos here on Youtube. Think I will be downloading some Aliens tunes as well, sweet song, very captivating. Hope the rips are in FLAC! Thanks dude!
@gulskjegg No problem! I'm amazed this particular video has 37,000 views, because it's not really as interesting as my others. But there you go. Glad you like The Aliens, they're a great band.
I used Ubuntu 9.04 and after I installed my Drivers for my NVIDIA GeForce 3 Ti200 graphics card it made the Title bar of the windows disappear and the Icons on the panels were in random places and i Researched it on google for a fix found a few but they were confusing so I am going to try out ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 1!
Hopefully a little more luck with that! If not I can report it as a bug to the Ubuntu Community!
@mazza58 there is wine if you dare to test it. I would rather use amazon MP3, better deals, works on every MP3 player/i pod. If your looking for something to sync with your ipod try Songbird. It syncs with most ipods and mp3 players. Also it can browse the web and add ons.
Docky isn't to the point where it can replace the Gnome or KDE panels though. AWN is much better in that respect, I love Gnome-Do but I use the pop-up interface and either AWN or a panel.
gnome-do is awesome. By far this single little app has filled a much needed hole in desktop computing -> quick access to your shit. I hardly use the menu's on the gnome panel anymore. Epic piece of software.
Loving 9.04, but since I have an ATI X800 XT, I'm not getting everything out of it that I should be... leave it to ATI to be a damn day late and dollar short again with their drivers for older cards. I guess ceasing support is supposed to encourage me to buy a new card... and it will... an nVidia. GG ATI.
try wine it'll run a couple versions of photoshot anyway.... and now there is opengl support in virtualbox... you can run it in seamless mode so the apps appear to be running in Linux... for what that is worth anyway
whats the performance on nautilus like in 9.04? as on 8.04 it just keeps using up ram. i have 1gb and after an hour or so it goes from 250mb to 800mb and i have to log out and back in to get it back.
On that laptop did you have Vista or XP or Windows 7 Running on it????
Do you have a Dual boot on that Laptop?
Anyway Ubuntu 9.04 looks good I hope I can get it to run on my Dell Dimension 8200 Desktop PC with 256MB RAM and an NVIDIA 64MB GeForce Ti200 Graphics Card I had XP but it ran way too slow but I might put XP back on when I get some new RAM for that machine!
"I'm saying that do you think Ubuntu 9.04 will be a lot better than ubuntu 8.10?"
IMO 8.10 was definitely a step up from 8.04. Though I have yet to use it, 9.04 seems like it would have been a better LTS release. The added feature count doesn't seem very high but it seems more polished in a decent amount of things and has an increased focus on performance. May I ask what you didn't like about 8.04?
I would recommend making a separate home partition mounted on /home if you can. That way you won't have to worry about writing over your old home directory when you do a fresh install next time. You can even run experimental dists and feel right at home.
i'm using do, too. got rid of both gnome panels, though. everything i want can be done through do. nice video. never heard the aliens before; pretty cool. nice and chill. good music to relax to.
yes, i know that it can be put on the bottom. But the thing is it will always cover something, wherever it is. Can you configure it to keep below window when not in use like awn ?
Not yet but this is an upcoming feature. Bear in mind that Docky is just an extension of Gnome-do, and the focus of the developers will be to develop the "Do" aspect first.
yeah, i set it up so the windows don't overlap. there's obviously some waste of screen real estate when your windows don't maximize to more than the top of the dock, but at least nothings overlapping
I hope those Gnome apps are just as stable like those in Kubuntu 8.04. I had much problems with stability while exploring files etc on Ubuntu hmm.. was it 7.04? :). Now I'm waitng for Kubuntu 9.04 but I have some bad feelings about KDE4. Theres no way it starts on my HP G6090 EA. (I mean KDE4 on Kubuntu 8.10.) I'll try again new Gnome, however.
As I said in the description, it's The Aliens, from their album "Luna" and the song's called "Boat". Each track is completely different, but yeah, I think the whole album is this good.
I am resolved! I shall try gnome dock! How stable is it? My experience in the past with docks on linux has never been a very long lasting one. Cairo dock has loads of funcionality, but not very stable, and AWN is the oposite. What is gnome dock like? I'm not to fussed about jaunty though as I've just moved from ubuntu to arch linux. @EMGPJt I deleted all the panel.
However, how can I get network manager in docky?
Albertnetymk 2 years ago
Is it possible to get Itunes for Linux? (Well Ubuntu?)

Not iTunes itself (Apple refuse to help), but there are a number of alternatives which support iPod (not touch, yet) syncing.

And forget about Wine, nice software but no way for a quite intense use of Photoshop especially CS4 or even CS3...

It is. Just a few tweaks are necessary. If you use ext4 as your file system, you'll be fine.

how do you change the orientations of the dock? like top or bottom :-o
nom9rouge 2 years ago
If you have 0.81 you can change it in gconf.
mazza558 2 years ago
I've intalled Docky 0.8.1.3, but there is no option to set the default location of the dock on screen, in Preferences.
Where can I find that?
Any chance of a guide to the way you've set it up? It looks fantastic. A lot better than the default.
wilyc0y0te 2 years ago
You can find that option in gconf-editor, searching for gnome-do and looking in the DockyPreferences section.

I upgraded from Hardy to Interpid without troubles and I would like to keep my current install.
I guess I'll wait about a month or so before I do my upgrade, just in case there is some bug with upgrading.
Share your experiences please.

lillen300 2 years ago
Of course it's free!
You can upgrade to 9.04 from the Update Manager, which will tell you when the new release is out.
mazza558 2 years ago
ok well how long should that take?
lillen300 2 years ago
Depends on the speed of your connection and PC, but around 2-3 hours for me.
mazza558 2 years ago
ok well how much better than 8.10 is it?
lillen300 2 years ago
Depends on your PC. For my laptop (specs in signature) it was a much better experience than Intrepid.
mazza558 2 years ago
why so?
lillen300 2 years ago
Because all the hardware worked better with Jaunty than it did Intrepid, so the experience was more ... fluid.
mazza558 2 years ago
ok sounds nice
lillen300 2 years ago
I just updated 8.10 to 9.04rc and looks really nice... I'd say it was a worthwhile update... it looks a lit like 8.10, but a lot more polished...
