  • Nice demo! Ive been running 9.10 on a Dell 1.4ghz 2GB RAM netbook. Im really starting to like Ubuntu so I threw together an old AthlonXP 3000+ w/ 1GB RAM and a Radeon 9800 256MB. The netbook video is a 44mhz chip that simply cant keep up. I will try this Docky thing, and check out some more demos here on Youtube. Think I will be downloading some Aliens tunes as well, sweet song, very captivating. Hope the rips are in FLAC! Thanks dude!

  • @gulskjegg No problem! I'm amazed this particular video has 37,000 views, because it's not really as interesting as my others. But there you go. Glad you like The Aliens, they're a great band.

  • Use gtk-RecordMyDesktop instead of a camera. It's quite helpful.

  • great program, but if i recall right, it doesn't like recording 3d games.

  • I used Ubuntu 9.04 and after I installed my Drivers for my NVIDIA GeForce 3 Ti200 graphics card it made the Title bar of the windows disappear and the Icons on the panels were in random places and i Researched it on google for a fix found a few but they were confusing so I am going to try out ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 1!

Hopefully a little more luck with that! If not I can report it as a bug to the Ubuntu Community!

  • I use no panels, Docky totally replaces it for me.

  • @EMGPJt I deleted all the panel.

However, how can I get network manager in docky?

  • Is it possible to get Itunes for Linux? (Well Ubuntu?)

  • Not iTunes itself (Apple refuse to help), but there are a number of alternatives which support iPod (not touch, yet) syncing.

  • @mazza58 there is wine if you dare to test it. I would rather use amazon MP3, better deals, works on every MP3 player/i pod. If your looking for something to sync with your ipod try Songbird. It syncs with most ipods and mp3 players. Also it can browse the web and add ons.

  • What a vision of beauty :) Nicely done!

  • Docky isn't to the point where it can replace the Gnome or KDE panels though. AWN is much better in that respect, I love Gnome-Do but I use the pop-up interface and either AWN or a panel.

  • How do I move the Dock? I have Docky all setup, I just need to know what to do to move it.

  • Nice :D Ubuntu 9.04 is just awesome. Everthing just works perfectly (for me at least) nice setup with dock and everthing.

    Ubuntu rocks!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Awesome vid and desktop setup man.

What window border and icon theme are you using there?

  • Shiki-colors and Meliae icons, I think.

  • gnome-do is awesome. By far this single little app has filled a much needed hole in desktop computing -> quick access to your shit. I hardly use the menu's on the gnome panel anymore. Epic piece of software.

  • Well i can't upgrade because i have a laptop, but if i were to go back in time, i would choose invidia :( and i'm upgrading to jaunty right now XD

  • Loving 9.04, but since I have an ATI X800 XT, I'm not getting everything out of it that I should be... leave it to ATI to be a damn day late and dollar short again with their drivers for older cards. I guess ceasing support is supposed to encourage me to buy a new card... and it will... an nVidia. GG ATI.

  • The Final Version of Ubuntu 9.04 is out now!

  • As for the gnome on top of the screen, similar to video?

  • I miss ubuntu so much... sniff u.u

  • then download it again xD

  • Adobe Photoshop

    Adobe Illustrator

    AutoCAD

That's why I can't use ubuntu... the only three reasons that keep me away from it.

  • try wine it'll run a couple versions of photoshot anyway.... and now there is opengl support in virtualbox... you can run it in seamless mode so the apps appear to be running in Linux... for what that is worth anyway

  • dual boot them

  • And all these problems can be solved using a little WINE.

  • Same reasons as satsuru (without autocad) I can not use Ubuntu as much as I would like to!!!

And forget about Wine, nice software but no way for a quite intense use of Photoshop especially CS4 or even CS3...

  • GIMP

    Inkscape

    QCad

Three reasons you CAN use Ubuntu.

  • Nope these reasons you can use LINUX.

btw these program's has also an Windows port too.

  • Hi,

I like your Interface & skin

    Please can u tell me what icons / themes / effects are you using :}

    Pretty sweet 5 Stars

  • Thanks mazza for the song title. Would you know off the top of your head if Jaunty is fully compatible with SSD drives?

  • It is. Just a few tweaks are necessary. If you use ext4 as your file system, you'll be fine.

  • hi dude. great vid. i do have one question.

whats the performance on nautilus like in 9.04? as on 8.04 it just keeps using up ram. i have 1gb and after an hour or so it goes from 250mb to 800mb and i have to log out and back in to get it back.

  • how do you change the orientations of the dock? like top or bottom :-o

  • If you have 0.81 you can change it in gconf.

  • I've intalled Docky 0.8.1.3, but there is no option to set the default location of the dock on screen, in Preferences.

    Where can I find that?

Any chance of a guide to the way you've set it up? It looks fantastic. A lot better than the default.

  • You can find that option in gconf-editor, searching for gnome-do and looking in the DockyPreferences section.

  • Great; thanks!

  • simple and clear video, thanks for this.

  • What song is this?

  • Music is "Boat" by "The Aliens"

  • On that laptop did you have Vista or XP or Windows 7 Running on it????

Do you have a Dual boot on that Laptop?

Anyway Ubuntu 9.04 looks good I hope I can get it to run on my Dell Dimension 8200 Desktop PC with 256MB RAM and an NVIDIA 64MB GeForce Ti200 Graphics Card I had XP but it ran way too slow but I might put XP back on when I get some new RAM for that machine!

  • I had Vista on it a while back but it kept getting BSODs all day, so I wiped it and installed Ubuntu.

  • Anybody had experience with upgrading from Interpid?

I upgraded from Hardy to Interpid without troubles and I would like to keep my current install.

I guess I'll wait about a month or so before I do my upgrade, just in case there is some bug with upgrading.

    Share your experiences please.

  • I'd backup all your data and do a clean install of Jaunty. It really runs fast after a clean install.

  • Thanks for advice.

  • How much % do think Ubuntu 9.04 will be better than Ubuntu 8.10 because I installed Ubuntu 8.04 in December and I didn't like it at all?

  • What do you mean by % better? In what way?

  • I'm saying that do you think Ubuntu 9.04 will be a lot better than ubuntu 8.10?

  • "I'm saying that do you think Ubuntu 9.04 will be a lot better than ubuntu 8.10?"

IMO 8.10 was definitely a step up from 8.04. Though I have yet to use it, 9.04 seems like it would have been a better LTS release. The added feature count doesn't seem very high but it seems more polished in a decent amount of things and has an increased focus on performance. May I ask what you didn't like about 8.04?

  • is this free and well when i have 8.10 will they say that i can download it?

  • Of course it's free!

You can upgrade to 9.04 from the Update Manager, which will tell you when the new release is out.

  • ok well how long should that take?

  • Depends on the speed of your connection and PC, but around 2-3 hours for me.

  • ok well how much better than 8.10 is it?

  • Depends on your PC. For my laptop (specs in signature) it was a much better experience than Intrepid.

  • why so?

  • Because all the hardware worked better with Jaunty than it did Intrepid, so the experience was more ... fluid.

  • ok sounds nice

  • I just updated 8.10 to 9.04rc and looks really nice... I'd say it was a worthwhile update... it looks a lit like 8.10, but a lot more polished...

  • Is the boot time faster than 8.10, and by how much?

  • About 10 seconds faster, from 42 to 32 seconds.

  • for your desktop

    for your notebook

    for your server

    UBUNTU 9.04

    13 days to go

  • How come you dont have the bar set to autohide?

This allows it to zip upwards when not in use and would solve your overlapping windows issues!

  • Hi mate, what GTK theme are you using? and please also tell me your icon theme... Thanks :D

  • Shiki Brave GTK, Meliae icons.

  • hey mazza, im thinking of ugrading to 9.04 from the gutsy gutsy 7.10. do you think its best to do a fresh install or upgrade?

  • Do a fresh install. Gutsy and Jaunty are very different and there could be lots of breakage otherwise.

  • hey..thanks mazza..i do a fresh install when 9.04 is out! im really quite new to linux although i been using since the gutsy days..

  • I would recommend making a separate home partition mounted on /home if you can. That way you won't have to worry about writing over your old home directory when you do a fresh install next time. You can even run experimental dists and feel right at home.

  • April?! Damn, i just requested a Live CD for 8.10, i should have waited!

  • Mazza, thanks for posting. How much snappier is it than Intrepid? What's the single biggest change?

  • On ATI, a lot snappier for me. Your Mileage May Vary though.

  • Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Kubuntu???

    Hard to decide!

I've never been a fan of GNOME, I'm a KDE guy, but I have to say this is tempting.

Good job for the GNOME team.

And thanks so much for the video, am downloading the BETA =D

  • I'm going to wait until April 23 ... if I can!

BTW what is the name of the background song. It's great too.

    M

  • According to my TrackID

    Song: Boats

    Artist: The Aliens

    Album: Luna

  • i'm using do, too. got rid of both gnome panels, though. everything i want can be done through do. nice video. never heard the aliens before; pretty cool. nice and chill. good music to relax to.

  • i love the dock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • bad dock. It covers the window title bar

  • It can be put on the bottom. I wanted to try it out on the top.

  • yes, i know that it can be put on the bottom. But the thing is it will always cover something, wherever it is. Can you configure it to keep below window when not in use like awn ?

  • Not yet but this is an upcoming feature. Bear in mind that Docky is just an extension of Gnome-do, and the focus of the developers will be to develop the "Do" aspect first.

  • yeah, i set it up so the windows don't overlap. there's obviously some waste of screen real estate when your windows don't maximize to more than the top of the dock, but at least nothings overlapping

  • Comment removed

  • thanks, very nice. also great music.

  • I hope those Gnome apps are just as stable like those in Kubuntu 8.04. I had much problems with stability while exploring files etc on Ubuntu hmm.. was it 7.04? :). Now I'm waitng for Kubuntu 9.04 but I have some bad feelings about KDE4. Theres no way it starts on my HP G6090 EA. (I mean KDE4 on Kubuntu 8.10.) I'll try again new Gnome, however.

  • How you put docky on the top?

I have it on the bottom of the desktop and i can't see any option to change it.

  • You have to compile the latest version, or wait a month or two for the next official release.

  • Ok,cool,thanks.

  • i just switched from using awn and so far i am happy using it.

  • Very impressed!

  • WHO is the artist singing in the background?

Is their whole CD this good?

  • As I said in the description, it's The Aliens, from their album "Luna" and the song's called "Boat". Each track is completely different, but yeah, I think the whole album is this good.

  • nice vid

better if you increase the brightness

    :)

  • or use gtk-recordmydesktop ;)

  • ATI drivers do not work well with it unfortunately.

  • is it free?

  • awesome thats going on my eee pc 701 :)

  • It's a beta but it's already very stable indeed. I'd go for it!

  • I am resolved! I shall try gnome dock! How stable is it? My experience in the past with docks on linux has never been a very long lasting one. Cairo dock has loads of funcionality, but not very stable, and AWN is the oposite. What is gnome dock like? I'm not to fussed about jaunty though as I've just moved from ubuntu to arch linux. I think I'll try it when it comes out though, in a virtual machine.
