  • Mine has eroded after almost 3 years and 140 weight loss. Surgery is Friday.

  • Stunning New Research: "Placement of a gastric band appears to be a disservice"

    "The placement of a gastric band appears to be a disservice to many morbidly obese patients and therefore, in the current culture of evidence based medicine, the prevalent use of laparoscopic gastric banding can no longer be justified. " Dr. Guller from Toronto, Canada. Furthermore, they state: "There is mounting and convincing evidence that gastric banding is suboptimal at best. "

  • I have dropped 124 lbs in 4 years.i am down to 178 now but I have just started having some pain i will go to my dr. for a flora-xray in the morning..

  • Nothing is 100% What I have found is that if you don't follow the program you will fail, and then there is medical error that can happen with anything. I had the lap-band in feb of this year and I've lost 96 pounds and it has been a fantastic tool! Somethings work for some people and some things don't. The other reason I've seen with the failed lap band is lack of education, you go out of country... you get what you pay for.

  • My husband wanted to get this done and now this video has convinced him NOT TO!

  • Lap band seems inherently dangerous. You have to eat less anyway -- only if you eat too much with a band, you get sick or die.

    Why not just pay someone to punch you if you eat too much?

    Better yet, only have salmon, oranges, blueberris, and beans in your house, and only eat at home?

  • DrR, I have no doubt the google numbers of failures are high - however as this is world-wide I was wondering on a regional level how common is this? I am booked for lap-band surgery and am researching every eventuality, just curious to know how common failure can be and what causes it. Does it have to be removed altogether when this happens? thks.

  • I also had a problem with my band:erosion. I had my first surgery to put it in Brazil, 1999. I had to remove it here in New York, March, 2007 by Dr. Domenick Gadaleta, at North Shore Hospital. Since then I have gained all the weight back. I almost died with the removal surgery. Could someone help me?

  • Ok...You can blame the patient for the band slipping...but what about erosion sp? How often does that happen? That's somthing you can't pin on the patients!

  • Yes bands can indeed slip. Bands only ever slip if they are place not properly or if the patient throws up too much. I work for the company that did my surgery and any case of a slip has only been user error in our clinic. I'm glad your friend is better.

  • update from my friend who's lap band slipped while flying from Vegas.She had previous lost 265 pounds within two years.Her total now is 300 pounds.Her last 36 pounds was a hard way to lose weight.Vomiting for 7 days ,24/7, taking in liquids and out it come.She was extremely dehydrated and almost a goner.She is much better now.

  • The band doesn't fail; the patient fails.. If the band slips it is almost always the patients fault from throwing up too much.

  • Google "Lap Band Failure" and

    1 week ago there were 219,000 hits with LapBand Failures!

    1/15/2009 Google "failed lapband" increased to 397,000 citations...

  • a friend of mine just had her lap band slipped while flying home from Vegas. She felt a sharp pain and was very uncomfortable.She prepared for a cruise for 7 days.Once on the ship she became bedridden and for 7 days began vomiting terribly. Lost 36 pounds.Emergency surgery was performed once we returned home.We were told within a week if she had not come to the hospital she probably would have died.She now is doing great.Had lap band was adjusted and opened. So lap bands can slip.

  • To DrR: "Hi...I have had the Lapband for 3 years and I have lost 32 pounds ..."

    ** Read it and Weep;

    Go to the internet;

    Google "Lap Band Failure" and

    Read over a Quarter of a Million stories of People with LapBand Failures!

    Wait another Year and the Number will rise by the Hundreds of thousands
