Conan was going to leave and NBC wanted to keep him so they told him that if he stayed he could take over as host of the Tonight Show in 5 years time. Problem was, at the time Conan took over, Leno was number one in the late night ratings and had consistently beaten Letterman in the ratings for 15 years. The whole thing is really NBC's fault.
i don't think leno is a victim in this. why did he say he would retire when coco was announced 6 YEARS before this happened. Leno needs to step back and let Conan do this things

I've never found him funny, one night after I was done watching some of the NBC comedians I switched it to CBS, and I see an... alligator puppet? That was an immeadiate turn off.
There's no difference between Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien. Both are funnier than Letterman and Fallon combined, and both combined aren't as funny as Ferguson.
@VictimOfBoredom Ferguson is actually very funny, but at first people only see the slap stick, and think that's all he is about. after you watch a couple of shows, you really get a feel for his quick wit, which flies over the head of many. @VictimOfBoredom Ferguson is actually very funny, but at first people only see the slap stick, and think that's all he is about. after you watch a couple of shows, you really get a feel for his quick wit, which flies over the head of many. I like Jay and Conan also, Jay is best for interviews, plus i love his headlines segment, Conan is fun because he is so off the wall sometimes.

I'm glad he's got a job & makes good money etc. but I can't understand how he got hired in the first place or what he would do without a laugh track & applause sign. Bill Simmons of ESPN predicted in March of 2009 exactly what would happen to Conan in January of 2010. Jay Leno is a hopeless applause junkie who conspired to hurt Conan's ratings by moving to 10 PM to syphon away the best guests.
