His music is OK, but I cannot see that he really understand Mahler's despair in Sym 5. The conductor might analyze the score well, but he didn't feel Mahler's real emotion in the score.
This is really just an excellent performance of the opening solo, so German sounding and phrasing is spot on. They should make us all use rotary trumpets for the German romantic composers, it's really just always sounds so much better to my ears.
@designersunglasses1 They're just Rotary valve trumpets. The sound is a little more mellow than the valve trumpet. I honestly like the sound of them better than the valve trumpet, but they're crazy expensive. There is a video on here of Allison Balsom playing a rotary valve piccolo trumpet and it sounds very nice if you ever find it, she's playing an oboe concerto. Just in case you want to see more of the rotary valves in action :).
@GregHales I must ask...why is it that you constantly take shots at such a prestigious group? To me, it sounds like a sports fan who is ripping on the team that spurned them in the playoffs a year ago. Is there an underlying reason you dislike the Chicago Symphony?
@greenerroee hmmm... arent these german trumpets? im from switzerland and in my country we say german trumpets... but... no idea... maybe cornets. so if theyre cornets... sorry :D
I am contiinually amazed at the consistently high quality fo the German radio orchestras. I remind my American friends that the Berlin Phil is not the only good orchestra in Germany. In fact, I have yet to hear a recording by any German orchestra that was not at least pretty good.

The New York Philharmonic went from Mahler (Outstanding) to Bernstein (Genius), to Maazel (Not Bad) to Gilbert (Not Good).
Please... You could at least try to bring Simon Rattle in?

Great trumpet solo! A good argument for using a rotary valve.

@benjaminsurber just watch videos of german/austrian orchestras... (Berliner Philharmoniker/Winer Philharmoniker Lucerne festival orch. Gewandhausorchester, hr-sinfonieorchester... etc.)

@SchwarzeDose21 Oh yeah, Berlin is probably the best to listen to in my opinion. Gabor Tarkovi is an amazing trumpet player.

they are rotary valves and chicago symphony is not overrated at all you have no clue what your talking about i guess

Not bad...not edge or obnoxious like the Chicago Symphony....more musical than the overrated Chicago Symphony.

Those are rotary valve Trumpets. There are no Cornets in this video.

I feel like every time I find a video of the first movement of this symphony that I really like, it gets removed.

Trompeter1971 1 year ago
