Yeah this went all the way up to 3 winter/spring of '79, first part of that year was swamped in disco. Nice to hear this retro 60ish tune out there at the time fighting the good fight for classic instrumental music. Loved it then, love it now.
Oh lord I love this song so vary much . Daddy and I would dance to it as I stud on his feet and whirl around the living room floor. Gosh darn it I told myself I wouldn't cry here I am Blubbering like I old dope. I sure miss daddy .
The only song that ever moved my father enough to bring home, as a single.vinal 45, me my siblings and my father, them days are some nice memories, think I was around 10 or 11
I heard someone say that this is the most famous song in the world of music. Most famous? Probably not. Most recognized? Quite possibly!!! It's so catchy, sticks in your mind all day. I find myself humming it at work but the horses never seem to mind!
This is on of the most beautiful and haunting melodies I have ever heard. I wore out two 45s listening to this over and over again when I was young. Thank goodness for CDs.
The first time I heard this was when I'd switched over to BBC2 by accident one evening, and hit on the "A Round with Aliss" golf program. I was about to switch channels when this melody started as the program finished. This has been with me ever since.
This used to play on Top 40 popular radio when I was a kid, back in the 70s. Would never make it in with the shallow crap they pass off as music, today. Those were better times.
I can remember this being the song the local news played for their ending creidts, too. That meant "Star Trek" was next! Memories....memories....

Always loved this from childhood, never new what it was called, glad I found out, will listen to it with great affection, absolutley brilliant tunel, love love love it with all my heart
Good day daveboy, this is not that difficult. I have played this song in the '70's and my lil cousin of 9 is playing it now. There is the intro then the first fase and then second there after it is just repeating itself.
When I listen to this song, I think of my grandmother who passed away in November of last year at the age of 91. She loved this song and would play it for me when I was a little boy of about 4 or 5 yrs old. I still love listening to this song.
I first heard this song when I was young 10 ish or so.. and was so enraptured at the magic, when I encounter my first reliably usable piano I taught myself how to play this, note by note, one hand at a time. Took me about a year or so by playing it over, and over and over until I played perfectly and without flaw once.. since then whenever I pass by a music store display in a mall or a piano that someone I know owns, I try to recapture and enrapture any passersby. It always brings a smile.
@berneyvonk1 My dad NEVER did and I also never heard him sing too. It's a shame because by brother heard him sing when I was very young and he said he was an awesome singer. What a waste of talent to never use it. My mom sang a little when she was happy, and I think that's why I'm so hooked on music.
My mother is an excellent pianist and used to play this for me to try and inspire me to play. Unfortunately lessons with mom never worked, but I LOVE THIS SONG and this version is awesome!
I ABSOLUTELY "LOVE" THIS SONG!!!! WHEN I WAS A CHILD, (5 OR 6), AND I WOULD HEAR THIS SONG, IT WOULD DRAW ME TO IT AND I WOULD SIT UP ON THE COUNTERTOP WHERE THE RADIO WAS. MY MOM FINALLY BOUGHT ME THE 45 BUT UNFORTUNATELY I DON'T HAVE A RECORD PLAYER ANYMORE! THANK GOD 4 YOUTUBE!!!!!! NIKKI (38)

@kaitlynhb01 I used to walk around my grandma's coffee table with my finger slightly dragging on it, making ballerina steps, and I would make my aunt do the same with me, I was 2 years old, but I remember. This song made me the happiest!!!
When I was 3 or 4 years old, my dad bought my mom a jewelry box shaped like a tiny grand piano. When you opened it, the wind-up mechanism would start up, and play this song. I used to break into my parent's bedroom around 5 years of age, and play this song, wind it up again, and play it, over, and over, and over again. This song brings incredible childhood memories back.
The local Ice Cream Truck uses the hook from this song as his music, everytime I hear it I think of this song and play the CD I have it on! And ironically, I think of ice cream for some reason ...
@Kitsuneranger Yes, think of the main hook done in Muzak style (old time elevator music would be a step up). And the part about when I hear it on CD I think of Ice Cream was a partial joke - I really think - oh, the real version, but then the thought of having some vanilla ice cream DOES creep in from time to time. Yes, I know, I need a life! :P
Who do you suppose are the 4-fry brain bozo's that singled themselves out to DISLIKE this piece? JERK dancers with ears so fried that they can't appreciate excellence when they hear it? There are TO MANY young people out there that appreciate the finer things in life...the simpleton 4 must have cooked their clarity buttons.
@ClayVessels I don't know. They'd have to not like music to not like this. I've been listening to this since I was a little boy, and I never get tired of Music Box Dancer. It's one of my all time favourite instrumental pieces.
Fantastic piece of music... would love to be able to play this on the piano. Need to try and find the music for it or a decent MIDI version that I can convert in Sibelius. Can anybody help? Let me know via PM or reply to my comment if you can please :) @fdrww2 Sorry to hear about you Dad, its a very moving story you post and brings a tear to my eye even though I don't know him. I'm sure he will live on in every who knew him's memory.
I can't believe I finally found this ... you have no idea how long I have had this in my head, I was resigned to never being able to find it! Do you know hard it is to find a piece of music without lyrics! almost impossible! I cant believe I've found it!!
All those days trying to recreate it (when I dont even play the piano) asking people on yahoo answers "whats that famous upbeat piano piece...you know the one?" I had nothing to go on to give any more information, but now I've found it... wow
@TheTalkingCamera - Hello. Me, too. I could only remember that the title included music box or boite de music and the artist was Frank somebody. I tried to look up "charted piano records" and such. Finally, I stumbled into this and am thrilled. Great music lives forever. Thank you for posting. Peace to ALL.
This is one of the greatest if not the greatest instrumental ever! I grew up listening to this with my dad and can never forget his reaction as we listened.
I completely agree. The only other instrumental that I think ates right up with this one is Paul Mauriat's "Love Is Blue". I like that one VERY SLIGHTLY better.
A great instrumental from Frank Mills! This received an immaculate amount of airplay when it was originally released. Peaked on the U.S. Billboard chart in March 1979!
This record was my first present to my mom on mother's day 1978. I supposedly bought it for her, only I was only seven months old. Makes me all teary eyed.
The 1st time I heard this song I was three years old and I was in the back seat of the car with my two brothers(one of the few times I got a window) we had gone sled riding and were on our way home when this song came over the radio
Not only do I love this song, but so do my dogs. Whenever it thunders and they get afraid, I play this song. It calms them right down! They even have big toothy grins as if to say "Thanks we needed that."
Ain't too many other tracks like this, so rooted in the spirit of the '70s... in fact, I think it's in an elite group with Chuck Mangione's 'Feels So Good' and Simon Park Orchestra's 'Eye Level' (although this one and the Mangione track are the only 2 I directly remember hearing during the 70's). Great for waiting in airports, having lunch at the Hudson's Bay restaurant, the list goes on...
My Grandpa used to work at a university, and when ever school got out, he'd go on one of his "schools out shoping spree's". A player piano was one of the things he bought, long before I was born, and Grandma wouldn't have let him get it if she couldent get this song. Now this song is a part of my past, because of the player piano, and the player piano is part of my past becuase of this song.
This song makes me shiver in fear. It is the theme tune to a tv show in Richmond VA, and the host is a know pedophile. He used to go to Pollard park and touch the children there inapporpriately. He now spends his days in a deluded paranoid state claiming that the world is out to get him and all sorts. Sorry to throw cold water on everyones stories, but this song makes me feel ill.
@diaherri You're weird. Hitler was a vegetarian but I don't go around telling other vegetarians that vegetarianism makes me ill. Just because a bad person likes something doesn't mean that thing should forever be condemned.
I lived with my Great Grandparents when I was younger :) this song brings tears to my eyes.. they use to play Frank Mills before I went to bed, He inspired me to start piano.
head phones on flyin on wardair 747 prestwick- toronto , on ma way 2 sfo , grt flight sic and mems , best airline i eva flown on, typical canadian music wif gordon lightfoot, wreck of the edmund shere brill !!!
It looks like this song is nostalgic for everybody! My Dad played piano only by ear (and I did many times too), and we used to sit down and play this on the piano together. I remember hearing this song so much on the record player too.
This song reminds me of my nanny (BomBom) who passed away almost 4 years ago now. She was a music teacher and used to play this for me all the time. Right from when I was a little girl, right up to a young woman, I used to ask for this song and she would play it. Miss you BomBom, RIP. Having a little cry as I listen to this, brings back so many memories.
I loved this song as a child! It brings back so many memories! I cant believe I finally found it. I spent alot of time when I was younger trying to find this song and it seemed like no one could ever remember the name of it.I could only remember music box and after awhile, I thought I was wrong and even gave up! thank you for uploading it! still cant believe I found it!
I spent almost 20 years of my life without knowing the name of this wonderful piece of art. Today I heard it on the radio, picked up my IPhone as fast as I could, opened Shazam and voilá!.
Thanks for uploading. Really something worth to listen.
I first heard this song when I was in High School and my Dad got a recording of for me for my birthday because I liked it so much. Over the years, I found that Dad played it often himself, long after I had stopped listening to it. After he passed away last year, I found a tape of it in his stereo, he had been listening to it most likely the day he died. I play this all the time again and I think of you Dad.....
@fdrww2 what wonderful memories for you, im exactly the same, my dad loved his music and i could ask him to find a certain song or piece of music that i didnt know the name of and usually the same day he would give me the information i needed, i too think of him all the time and miss him every moment of every day...
@fdrww2 I can imagine how you feel. My dad passed away when I was in high school and certain songs remind me of him. I will think of you and your dad from now on when I hear this song :)
@fdrww2 I know what you mean. My dad always liked all of the old Glenn Miller music. I listen to them all time on you tube and think of my dad while I do.
When I hear this song, I picture a beautiful ice skater just gliding across the ice. Used to be when I was alone, if I was listening to this song, I would dance across the cement floor of our family room, as if I was an ice skater.
My grandmother and i use to clean house every saturday morning when i was a little girl, i got to pick the records we listended to while we were cleaning and this was alwas my first choice. God how I miss those days, times were so much more simple when you were a 7 year old little girl.
I know this going to sound odd, but it had been quite some time since i'd heard this song my mother has a music box that plays it and i always loved that music box..and there I was outside with my kids and this ice cream truck comes up the road playing that song and it just all came back to me.
Tried finding the free score for this online but to no avail, so had to play by ear. The instant chord change at the start of the right hand melody i didnt expect! I love it!! ^^
My parents use to play this for me as kid so i would fall a sleep. One night my parents took me to a quartet, my dad got them to play this song and dedicate it to me. One of my favorite memories as a kid. <3
Always brings back beautiful memories of my childhood when I hear this song. My older sister and I would dance around whenever we heard it on the radio. Of course, it was always random, and we couldn't wait to hear it again. Such innocent and sweet memories! Thanks for posting the music video!
Thank you for uploading this. I was really looking forward to listen to this. I had listed to it many years ago, but I didn't know how to find it because I didn't know the name.
my wife says her mother used to play this on the piano when she still lived at home. I thought she was kidding, until I heard my mother-in-law play the piano. She said she had it on a record and would play along with the record to make sure she had the right speed.
I saw a video of this song, where the dancer on the lid of the box came to life and performed a ballet before turning back into a statue at the end of the song. Has anyone else seen this video?
This song is part of one of my favororite memories. My father was an amazing musician, he was a band teacher and played almost any instrument. I bought this song on a 45 record, came home a played it for him because I thought it was just beautiful. He listened to the song twice and went to the piano and played the song. I was amazed. Always thought my dad was the smartest man to ever live!!!
@belairbum For your Father , Check out the song "Leader of the band" by Dan Fogelberg. If he's alive it may be the kindest song you can play for band leaders, If he's gone, Then I guess you walk in Dan Fogelberg's shoes A mile or two
@belairbum How fortunate for you! Truly a talent to be able to do that. I have requested it from several pianists and they always say how hard it was to perfect it.
This always makes me think of my dad; when I started playing the piano he gave me his old sheet music for this song. It was one of the first things I learned how to play and will always be a favorite of mine.
awsome sauce song!

A great instrumental from Frank Mills! This received an immaculate amount of airplay when it was originally released. Peaked on the U.S. Billboard chart in March 1979!
Bravo, Frank Mills!

This song is part of one of my favororite memories. My father was an amazing musician, he was a band teacher and played almost any instrument. I bought this song on a 45 record, came home a played it for him because I thought it was just beautiful. He listened to the song twice and went to the piano and played the song. I was amazed. Always thought my dad was the smartest man to ever live!!!
belairbum 1 year ago 2
@belairbum For your Father , Check out the song "Leader of the band" by Dan Fogelberg. If he's alive it may be the kindest song you can play for band leaders, If he's gone, Then I guess you walk in Dan Fogelberg's shoes A mile or two

@belairbum How fortunate for you! Truly a talent to be able to do that. I have requested it from several pianists and they always say how hard it was to perfect it.
