This is fantastically.. just wrong.. terribly, terribly wrong. At least part of this argument is that the guy that made it can't imagine the concept of infinity, therefore infinity can't exist.
He should talk to a mathematician. I'll bet a proper mathematician could make his head explode. I've heard a little talk attempting to explain the concept of the infinite to the less mathematically able. It was some freaky stuff.
So... his argument is we're at time's ending because time is infinite and we exist...? WHAT!?!
He's saying that time isn't something made up by us humans. Its like language, apparently this argument is like saying "209801809280duojasoijoisqjoij, therefore god exists"
By the way, if you spend time opening an infinite amount of doors you can still count the infinite doors. Its not like the universe pushed the pause button and turned off the television to stop existing. I hate this guy >=/
Mbison, the celebration of the solstice predates Christ by many centuries. Nearly all the things we identfy with Christmas are pagan in origin. Like many things in the Bible it's just a story.
I say we should put the Krumpus back in Christmas. That should make the holiday more fun.
It is simply a nice little holiday about a fictional god. It exists because enough people believe it to be true. The same goes for idols and other gods. They're celebrated because people THINK they exist.
umm it kinda did already. Most christian holidays were already holidays before christians put their stamp on it. Christmas was Saturnalia where parties where held since soon the wether would be getting better and farming could start again............
@mbison83 Christianity has done this with all holidays they celebrate just as when they converted ppl who where 'pagan' they would build thier new church right where they worshiped before so they could see that even though they worshiped a new 'god' it was still in the same place. I do like how you made the word holiday into holy-day, see you did it just like the church.
the fact that some people will go so far to try and prove a religion is wrong just blows my mind. i don't care what you say, i'll always strongly believe in God and you can't change that lol
We go that far because your beliefs are a retard to the persuit of real knowledge and human progression. It blows our minds that people are still willing to adhere to arcane beliefs that have been proven wrong just because that's what they were taught as a child.
Sorry, stormchaser, the universe is 13.7 billion years old, evolution does happen, and your deity and Jesus don't exist.
If your mind is stagnent, just go ahead and leave now. You have no business here.
i...know the universe is that old, what has that have to do with anything? and evolution is a THEORY, you can't prove it. besides, i wasn't even talking to you.
Proving you dont know what a theory is. notjustatheory(dot)com explains it well. This also leads me to believe you don't know much about evolution, what it proposes or even why you disagree with it other than it contradicts previously held views. You do have the advantage here in that you could google it really quick paraphrase what you saw and make it look like I was wrong, but I'm sure youre more honest than that. What does the theory propose?
ok well i didn't GOOGLE it. im pretty sure that the theory of evolution suggests that all living creatures derived from one single ancestor. a theory is a proposed explanation, just like the "big bang" theory.
Well that's really good actually. That's the position one should have (although I don't think you shouldn't care). And I'd still like you to know what a theory is because you said it like it's a bad thing, when it's quite the opposite.
A theory is no a "proposed" explanation except when laymen use it. Theory of evolution is the scientific definition... i.e. an explanation for a phenomena based on a body of FACTS: ERVs, fused chromosome #2, and the fact we've OBSERVED it happen, for example.
I'm pretty sure you think germ theory, atomic theory, gravitational theory, theory of relativity, etc are all correct. Amazing how all of a sudden people use the laymen definition when they talk about evolution...
The Big Bang Theory is a theory in the scientific sense as well, NOT the laymen definition. The laymen definition is called a hypothesis in science. The Big Bang theory has been proven via studies in Red Shift and is also confirmed by the cosmic microwave background radiation (and that's just for starters).
Seriously, stormchaser, I can understand if you're just ignorant of these things and ask questions, but don't go around spouting canards like "just a theory." It just makes you look silly.
It's all fair. if they want to pretend that scientific theory and lay theory mean the same thing. Then when they say jesus just correct them and say there are many Jesuses is my brother's gardener, he's a horrible man who cheats on his wife. If they try to say "Not that jesus" you just say "It's the same word it's gotta be the same guy."
well at the point they say "It's only a theory" they're so indoctrinated that the only way to make them think outside their training is to hit their emotions in a way that makes them question the logic they're using. Fun ones are "if God is the source of morality if you were asked by god to do something immoral would you do it?" The messiah son of god parodox. The messiah needs to be decended from david, mary wasn't joseph was. If jesus is the son of god he's not the messiah.
Once someone uses the "it's only a theory" excuse I know they're indoctrinated beyond a point that will really help. I continue because of someone else who might end up reading it and learn something.
Also, I don't care if you weren't talking to me, stormchaser. You're posting on an open forum. If you don't want to be criticized or ridiculed, then either keep your ideas to yourself, or don't have such ridiculous ideas.
Especially in a forum below an atheist video... one who's audience will be mostly people who know the science and won't think twice about destroying your argument without thinking twice about hurting your feelings. Feelings have no place here. Only evidence does.
No. My goal is to educate. I was just warning you that if you plan on putting your beliefs out in an open forum, then it doesn't matter who you were talking to, anyone can respond.
I was also warning you that the people here care more about truth than your feelings so be prepared if you want to continue a discussion here.
yes YOUR goal...to educate. i'm already educated. and i do get the concept of posting stuff on an open forum. and i already know the truth about everything. the end.
Apparently you're NOT educated very well, stormchaser, since you pulled out the "just a theory" argument. Only people with an almost complete lack of understanding of science and the scientific method would use that argument and think they could get away with it.
You also don't understand the concept of posting on an open forum if you tell someone you weren't talking to them.
Did you seriously just say that? Did I miss a bit of sarcasm or something? Only a complete moron would actually think that's true. I want to give you the benefit of the doubt, but you're just making it harder with every post you make to give you any credit at all.
Btw, Jesus did exist, it's a historical fact just like Napoleon having been the Emperor of France, ask any historian and he'll tell you that there is indisputable evidence to show that he did exist.
No, it's not a fact lesdavies. There is not a single contemporary record of Jesus ever having existed. (BTW, that comes from my fiance who has a degree in history and is a devout Christian. All you have to go on is faith.)
Besides that, even if Jesus was a real person, there's still no reason to believe that he was the son of God.
If you want real person provide a record of his existence that is both contemporary and written by someone who actually met him.
The closest you have now is the Gospels which were written at least 40 years after his supposed death (but most are 60-70 years after his supposed death), and none of those were even written by anyone who actually met the guy. They're, at best, written by a 3rd party.
Look, lesdavies, the people in this forum are only going to respond to real evidence.
If you want to use faith for your reason to believe, that's your deal, but don't try to come here, lie for Jebus, and expect us to just go "oh, okay."
The people in this kind of forum will more than likely know your religion better than you do. If you say you believe based on faith, then all we can say is believing based on faith is silly. Try to claim fact and we'll tear your argument to shreds.
It's because religion has damaging effect on society that we try hard. Telling people they have the ultimate source of morality in the pages of a bronze-aged book has that effect. Secondly your last statement read to me:
"I like living in my delusion and I'm so afraid of reality that I will close my mind to the possibility of my security blanket not being there. I see no reason and/or don't care whether or not my beliefs are reality, it's too hard to think critically and this feels nice"
Well that's not what I said and if that is how you read it then i think YOU are going though an illusion. how in the world do you think you're are going to correct a corrupt society (i think that's what your saying) when the majority of the U.S. (assuming you live in this country) is Christian? That's like, what, 300 MILLION people.
I understand that's not what you said but how I always read that. How can you think not changing your mind no matter what someone says (including sound logic and evidence) be a good thing?
I never said "corrupt society", I was saying religion is inherently illogical. And illogic is the bane of the world. Not all problems are cause by religious illogic but it can be a major factor. All I'm asking is for people to be rational and 'fighting' for that end. Not trying is not really an option.
because it's my decision. and the same goes for you. you're surrounded by non-atheists, yet you don't change your beliefs. how can that be a good thing?
So you think it's ok not to change your mind even in the face of contradictory evidence?
"non-atheists" also known as theists.
Why should I change my mind based on who I'm surrounded by? What does that have to do with it's validity? If we were in Sweden you'd be surrounded by the non-religious, would/should you change your mind? What about Saudi Arabia? Would you become Muslim? What is important is, is the claim supported by the evidence? Show the evidence and I'll change my mind.
I must say, it was nice the way he formalised his argument. I'm a bit disappointed you didn't attack the individual points rather than making a general disparaging comment. One can attack the inference to a first cause 'everything finite has a cause' as well as the inference to a first cause with a mind (as implied by Creator) rather than simply stating the conclusion was false.
They didn't attack his points directly because he had no new arguments. They've finched all of this argument in other videos and don't need to do it... again.
I'll destroy his argument for you though: The argument of "everything must have a cause" is a bullshit argument. There is only the two conclussions to that argument, and niether is valid. Either you make an infinite regression, or you assert your god doesn't need to have a cause.
This is NOT the kind of attention you want your video to have, Syrenav. The banana man tried to make the same argument saying that it helped his book sales. All it really does is get him laughed at when he tries to had out copies of the Origin at schools with students that laugh their asses off thinking about him sucking off a banana.
What if you got this great magical clock that has existed since infinity. The magical clock runs with magical bateries that never run off... But at some point someone, let's call it Dave, take off the magical bateries making the clock stop and then he put the bateries back making it begin again...
So you have a gap on the magical clock's running. The fact that it's run started on the moment Dave took the bateries off does not mean it didnt existed before.
The thing that gets me about these videos is that the creationist never sees where the logic they are arguing goes. If the universe can't have existed forever because NOTHING exists forever..
You guys know where this is going.
Then their god can't have existed forever, AND it needed some external force to create it.
This weak argument always ends in their chosen god getting a special exemption from what they were just arguing was a universal law.
I wish the Finches would riff a video I saw where creation is proved by a dinosaur fossil found that with preserve soft tissue...I know, silly, ain't it?
Tell me more about this Chili Monster, I'm beginning to doubt the existence of the Flying Spaghetti Monster as plausible as it is. Don't mention the Invisible Pink Unicorn though. That's just silly.
I feel left out not having this sent to me-- But I guess that;s like feeling left out for not getting swine flu. Playlisting cult movies does not make one the target of theists keen to convert one.
I don't care what anyone says, not only is the flying spaghetti monster deity awe inspiring, he is also benevolent and delicious! What more could worshipers ask for?
Wait, did I mention that he has a holy trinity too? A pair of meat balls are one and separate with him also.
I call on the wrath of Ziti unleashed, the fury of Hot Sausage run amok, the fire of Garlic in cloves to rise up and lay waste to you and all that you love! Doom be upon your people!
the chili monster will not be mocked, fear him for he is all powerful, all knowing, jealous and vengeful. and he will send you to damnation is the tomb of saurkraut for all eternity
The chili monster is a misbegotten off spring of the great and wise flying spaghetti monster when he decided to rape a salad bar. Repent for the serving ladle is nigh and whoa unto you who fail to wear the sacred bib.......it's far better than what the Mormons get too!
Wow this is all totally new stuff! Oh wait, I guess not, it's the cosmological argument again; first described by Plato and Aristotle over 2000 years ago. Nice try - NOT
Why do they always have to talk about "intelligent intervention"... Are your cells repairing themselves caused by Yahweh? Is that why we age, Yahweh just says "screw off, I'm tired of looking at you?"
It's a very big leap to go from 'the universe had to be created' to 'God did it'. I mean, God can't be proved as he is illogical. Therefore, you can't use human logic to prove his existence. You either believe in God or you don't, that's down to faith, so it gets on my nerves when people try and prove something illogical is logical.
2:18 I'm sorry thedarwinfinches, but you're wrong. If you were to say that, you would be talking about the entire video, not just the part.

That's like, what, 300 MILLION people.
stormchaser34869 2 years ago
I understand that's not what you said but how I always read that. How can you think not changing your mind no matter what someone says (including sound logic and evidence) be a good thing?
I never said "corrupt society", I was saying religion is inherently illogical. And illogic is the bane of the world. Not all problems are cause by religious illogic but it can be a major factor. All I'm asking is for people to be rational and 'fighting' for that end. Not trying is not really an option.
CriticalAtheist 2 years ago
because it's my decision. and the same goes for you. you're surrounded by non-atheists, yet you don't change your beliefs. how can that be a good thing?
stormchaser34869 2 years ago
So you think it's ok not to change your mind even in the face of contradictory evidence?
"non-atheists" also known as theists.
Why should I change my mind based on who I'm surrounded by? What does that have to do with it's validity? If we were in Sweden you'd be surrounded by the non-religious, would/should you change your mind? What about Saudi Arabia? Would you become Muslim? What is important is, is the claim supported by the evidence? Show the evidence and I'll change my mind.
CriticalAtheist 2 years ago
I got this one too, and it included the message "atheism refuted". How do I refuted lack of belief, guise?
On a side note, as a graphic designer I was more offended by the godawful photoshopping on the original clip more than anything.

Sorry guys, I found this criticism a bit lacking.
miksedene 2 years ago
They didn't attack his points directly because he had no new arguments. They've finched all of this argument in other videos and don't need to do it... again.
I'll destroy his argument for you though: The argument of "everything must have a cause" is a bullshit argument. There is only the two conclussions to that argument, and niether is valid. Either you make an infinite regression, or you assert your god doesn't need to have a cause.
Done.

1. An infinite number of moments cannot be traversed.
2. If an infinite number of moments had to elapse before today, then today would never come.
...
God is infinite, and existed before the Universe. Therefore, the Universe was never created. Q.E.D.? ::rolls eyes::

Dave, come back with my magic bateries!
nyarlotep 2 years ago
The thing that gets me about these videos is that the creationist never sees where the logic they are arguing goes. If the universe can't have existed forever because NOTHING exists forever..
You guys know where this is going.
Then their god can't have existed forever, AND it needed some external force to create it.
This weak argument always ends in their chosen god getting a special exemption from what they were just arguing was a universal law.
