  • emlyn the brave

  • A beautiful instrument

A firm hail to all celts from a Norse-Gæl in the Faroe Islands!

    Skál!

  • There's no better sound on this earth than that of the Uilleann pipes

  • this is my uncle Brian O'Brien and i'm proud to say that. <3

  • Davy Spillane ftw! pulls at your heart strings.

  • @edeanp This isn't Davy Spillane

  • the most beautiful sound I`ve ever heard......brings tears to my eyes..........love it

  • I am from Glasgow, Scotland ... and i love the Uilleann pipes (means elbow in Gaelic) while i am not Irish, the Scots and the Irish have some very firm ties, and are probably the closest of all the Celtic nations, been to Ireland so many times, i love it, the culture calls to me, and as a speaker of the tongue ... well, if your Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Cornish, or whatever ... be proud to be a celt .... Alba (Erin!) gu bragh !!

  • o come now folks, Brien did admirably. If you play the pipes, you realize all of what's going on.

    They're both wonderful players

  • gosh this brought tears to eyes - reminds me off my heritage my mum and dad and the island of softness and joy makes you think - such a sound unequal

  • One of the best sounds I have ever heard from Uilleann Pipes is 'An Angel Cried' from the film 'Waking Ned Devine' Now THAT is hauntingly beautiful!!! As a lover of the Scottish Pipe Music I would change my allegence without any hesitation!

  • not bagpipes! Uilleann pipes. The chieftains made them commercial... amongst others.

  • @ScubaLady1000 The Uilleann pipes are every bit bagpipes as the GHB is.

  • @frotz661 indded! the up is more complicated to play, i think! i play both and the GHB is only a thing of fast fingers! when you play the UP you have to think about jor fingers and the regoulators! then you have to think about your own interpretation of a tune! there are so many different things more to think about and also to build for the pipemaker, so nobody can say, that UP are not bagpipes!

  • these pipes are so chilling and spine tingling. but what a magnificant sound

  • Just beautiful, if I could get my guitar to sound like that I'd get a red wig, an irish accent a flowing gown and run away to Tara Hill and call the unicorns from out of the mystic mountains, ah! sigh..thanks..did I say gown? crazy..

  • makes you proud ta be irish long live the celts

  • rip mum x

  • These are the Uilleann pipes.

  • nobody ever metions the Cumbrian Pipes

  • @jillianbland i live in cumbria and i have never heard of cumbrian pipes

  • Search for Awesome Irish Pipes River dance if it doesn't grab the inside of your chest and pull at the end then..

  • amazing song im starting to play the scottish bagpipes but will be getting a set of Uilleann Pipes i play the flute and other wood winds but will be my first time playing bagpipes dose anyone know this guys name and were he is from

  • For 4:19 minutes, I am in Ireland - home of my ancestors.

  • Not to dispararge this musician, but Davey Spillane is the far superior piper (IMO) - just saying.

  • such beauty in music

  • @OkWhoFarted, Aye what @Mr2Badboybrown said. They are Uilleann Pipes, variation of the standard bagpipe. And the song is "Caoineadh Cuchulainn" or "The Lament of Cuchulainn"

  • You wanted to know what type of pipes were used in the above upload. They are called Uilleann Pipes.

  • there's such beauty in music

  • Uilleann pipes. In Irish that means "elbow pipes" you squeeze the bag with your elbow.

  • @shutout951 amazing, your knowledge of this!!!

  • This is how I know I'm Irish. 4th, maybe 5th generation American, maybe even more, haven't counted that far back... and yet I hear this and something deep inside me is HOME.

  • @swiggydiggy second generation Scottish and Irish, best of both worlds for me. I want to go someday.

  • stunning piece of music

  • Called Caoineadh Cu Chulainn by the amazing Davey Spillane <3

  • Uilleann pipes ....far more haunting than Bag Pipes...

  • @magisterludi92103a Uilleann pipes ARE bagpipes?

  • @PuddelUndercover Yes, they are bagpipes. I think what he meant was that they sound better than the Great highland Pipe.

  • This is Brian O'Brien on the Uilleann pipes playing Caoineadh Cu Chulainn (lament)

  • Ye'll do for me,brother .... that was the absolute bollox.... awesome.

  • This is my fave selection from the whole show, and an all time fave amongst celtic music selections. The sound of the sun still rising , even with the bittersweet tones of life still playing. That's how it makes me feel.

You feel it all the way to the soul.

  • Oh my god if you have heard this song and not been moved to TEARS, I tell you, TEARS, you have no goddamn soul. This is the most beautiful thing I have heard and it the freaking most beautiful thing that will ever EXIST.

  • Shame Davey has banned us from sharing his version. Hoping for more money?

  • Shame Davey has banned us from sharing his version

  • Saw this live a few years back. Not a single dry eye in the audience.

  • Seriously who hit the dislike button? That had to be on accident.

  • spartanT48 yes I like Daveys version better as well, BUT I'd like to play this good !!!

  • I have the the original River dance version who is this player it is very good indeed. sound track I think is better than river dance

  • @40thegardener2 his name is Brian O" BRIAN

  • @40thegardener2 his name is Brian O" BRIAN i meant Bryan o" Brien

  • OMG The goosebumps!!!!!!!!

  • WOW...... 8O

  • Uilleann pipes

  • I feel sorry for the guy, he just can't match what Davey did. And he tries so hard

  • @SpartanT48 him and Davey have different interpretations on how it should be played. to each his own i say :P

  • ONE person disliked this. :P

    meh to them

  • The pipes being played here are called Uileann Pipes, Uileann is the Gaelic word for elbow and as can be seen there is a lot of elbow movement in playing this instrument

  • Caoineadh cúchulainn is Gaelic for Cúchulainns lament, Cúchulainn being an ancient Irish warrior hero who, in his last battle, had to fight and kill his best friend.

  • Haunting spiritual music from the Celtic ancestral soul that speaks across time directly to our soul and spirit. Our soul cry tears and our spirit spreads wings to soar to new divine heights of enlightenment and understanding all at the same time.

The language of the soul which breaches the great mystery to speak the unspeakable and understand the incomprehensible that which words can not express.

From the Celts this is truly a great gift of spiritual story telling to us all. Blissful.

  • @Scar1934 Beautiful Words my Friend! Exactly what I feel! Thanks for that!

  • UIllean pipes! Irish parlor bagpipes if you will. and they are far more expressive because they aren't limited by the moisture of breathing into a tube. Wider octaval range and better sound, really.

  • Where can I get a Mp3 of this? I have been searching everywhere. I really would like Davy Spillane version better but this one would be fine too. Any one could tell me where I would appreciate it.

  • Goosebumps everywhere... just beautiful!

  • ..extraordinary *****

  • not a patch on davy spillaine

  • @21bigkev66 snap again lol Davey wins

  • @21bigkev66 still did pretty well, I've heard worse

  • fantastic!!!!! Absolutely Beautiful!

  • send chills up my spine every time i listen to this

  • 2:34 ~ epic... <3

  • The uillean pipes are the most beautiful instrument ever played....

  • A beautiful instrument played perfectly

  • They are Irish Uilleann Pipes, the song is called Caoineadh Cu Chulainn, in English it means Lament.

  • I'm a Scot and think these pipes are far better than those of my homeland. Beautiful !

  • I saw the show in Bremen Germany and this tune brought tears to my eyes.

    Im proud to be Irish

  • uilleann pipes for sure:)

  • *beautyfull * xD

  • So beautifull <3

  • Just goose bumps everywhere. So beautiful...

  • it's a Uilleann pipes, not bagpipes :')

  • @Kakaroane Uilleann Pipes are bagpipes there just a differant kind. When people think of bagpipes they think scottish Highland pipes but r LOTS of differant kinds.

  • @Kakaroane

Oh I know :') I just had to grin when I saw 'modified bagpipes' XD

  • @Kakaroane Uilleann pipes ARE bagpipes.

  • I know.

Just as there are Breton bagpipes, scottish bagpipes, french-dutch bagpipes, Northumbrian smallpipes, tulums, gaida's, duda's and so on.

Not everyone you comment to on youtube is completely daft you know.

  • @theheuft No they are not, there are many different parts on the uillean pipes which are not on the bag pipes and visa versa

  • @Knifejaw100 I think you're confusing the term bagpipes with the specific instrument known as the Great Highland Bagpipe. The term bagpipes refers to a family of instruments which includes the Uilleann pipes.

  • Comment removed

  • it's kind of sad to me

  • This brings back so many memories... i dare you to find a more moving piece of music

  • Es ist wunderschön

  • This guy sounds nice but Davey's version is superior compared to this one

  • @Oliviajiyah506 far superior indeed.

  • @Oliviajiyah506 far superior indeed.

  • @Oliviajiyah506 Yes but Davy's version was recorded and EQ'd in the studio. This way it was guaranteed to sound identical every single time, free of chanter malfunctions, and EQ for the best possible sound. For the live performance Davy took the reed out of the chanter and 'air played' along to his own recording. At least this guy is playing live, which is quite a feat. Many things can go wrong.

  • @Oliviajiyah506 thats not true at all, they are both amazing. Davy's version is better I agree but not "superior" to this one. get real

  • @Oliviajiyah506 that's one opinion...

  • @Oliviajiyah506 snap lol

  • The pipes moved me. I wish I could play them like him.

  • i thought it was a hichichri

  • Keine Widerrede. Und ich freue mich schon auf nächsten Monat, da sehe ich Riverdance bei ihrer Abschiedtournee

  • egal was ihr alle grad sagt und streitet...ich höre das grad und ich finde es wunderbar und unendlich schön

  • Couldn't disagree with anyone anymore than christhepiper, Are you freakin kidding !Dig the wax out of your ears. I assume you play....................what? the Kazoo

  • Does it really matter what kinda bagpipes they are? He is a good Bagpiper, and it sounds awesome.

  • Sorry Irish pipes are not more musical than Highland pipes. I my self am a Bagpiper that plays both highland and Irish pipes. Both can make music than can takw your breath away you just have to listen. open your heart and let your self fall in time and breath.

  • they're Uillean pipes. ("elbow" pipes) Irish bagpipes.

  • they may be more musical than bagpipes but i love the sound....i could listen to the pipes all day....its a shame that some people will never respect the pipe

  • My skin tinglesd with either version.

    Ron in OZ

  • irish pipes are way more musical than bagpipes !

  • Brilliant song but i agree with everyone that says not as much soul as Davy Spillane. btw this is def not Davy Spillane in case anyone doubts that fact

  • i was at this show on Broadway it was incredible

  • This is ok, but lacks the emotion Davey Spilane fills this tune with. It sounds mechanical by comparison.

  • The most exquisite piece of playing ever, Brian makes the pies talk. That is what mastering your art is.

  • Absolutely!

  • Most beautiful thing I have ever seen!

  • It is so amazing and beautiful!

  • i remember watching the video when i was younger, i thought it was the most beautiful thing id ever hear in my entire life.

  • The piper here is Brian O'Brien. He is playing Caoineadh Cu Chulainn. A lament on the uilleann pipes to Cuchulain. Its from Riverdance the New Show 1996 live from NYC. ~Ric~

  • This show was Brobway in 1998. I think it might be David Spillane or at least on of his songs.

  • I just saw Riverdance in Seattle, it was encredible! I absolutely love the Uilleann Bagpipes.

  • Shivering. Music Harmony is awesome! Player is master. Instrument is as pure as "Agnus Dei". razy how well this traditional instrument goes with synth. Can I get whole CD of such quality music?

  • Beautiful

  • Most Beautiful ever it gives me goosebumps and it makes my cries when I think of not so pleasant thoughts ..

Gonna see riverdance next week in antwerp! gonna be awesome!

  • I have never seen or hear something more beautiful in my whole life.

  • Those are Uilleann bagpipes (irsh pipes)

  • the type that is also used in Braveheart.

  • These pipes are not modified, they are Irish uilleann pipes.

  • Thank you so much for clarifying the pipes. The sound they make is hard to describe. Pipes for sure, but perhaps it's the song itself or the musicians style that I felt was best described as "haunting." I do love the sound and checked out your uploads. Thanks again.

  • @OkWhoFarted The average person is not aware that there in fact DOZENS of different kinds of bagpipes, and only a small amount are loud warlike instruments. This type is called an Uilleann pipe, and it is made in Ireland. They are a LOT harder to play than the Big Scottish bagpipes, and can not be played while marching, but they are a very soulful and mournful sound that is more suited for indoor events and somber occasions. Uilleann is the Gaelic word for elbow... I think..
