In the book Esmeralda is a silly, shallow girl of sixteen, who is in love with the Capt. up to the very end. She isn't even an actual gypsy. I really didn't like her, so it annoys me that she lives in nearly all versions. It also annoys me how in a few versions they turn her into someone with a socio-political agenda. The Esmeralda in the book had no such lofty ambitions.
awwww poor quasimodo.....why do people always look at the outside....y cant people also look on the inside......seriously!!! idiots!!!! esmeralda should really get that in her head!!
This movie is a little bit more accurate than some of the other adaptations although I am pissed Sister Gudule never makes an appeareance in any of them.
Frollo's death scene pisses me off in this movie;;
he openly admitted her was deeply in love with Esmeralda (in the book he even stabs himself when he thinks shes dead) but him dieing a cruel death in front of her doesn't bother her. She just shakes it off like its nothing!
Quasi would never kill his master, either, especially in such a way!
Derek Jacobi's the best Frollo and that's probably the best thing I like about this version + the test to become a vagabond. I hate how stiff and charmless Esmeralda is :-S pisses me off!
i wish that the boat scene was in this movie.... and also , i'm reading the book for english and i love it but really i can't understand why gringoire is in love with the goat.
@randomcandy567 Since Gringoire can't have Esmeralda since she is in love with Phoebus he respects her decision and takes out his sexual frustration on the goat or at least that is what's implied.
Poor Quasi...First he has to stand and watch as Esme is reunited with Pierre and THEN because of his broken heart he...*sobs* I LOVE THIS VERSION! Anthony Hopkins is a god.
what was frollo trying to do with esmeralda? i'm asking myself was he trying to betray her to the authorities, or was he helping her sneak out off the church?
In the book he and Gringoire helped her sneak out of the cathedral. Just in time, cause a moment later the soldiers arrived with orders to hang Esmeralda. I think that he wanted to save her in the film too.
In the film he is saving her, but in the book it is suggested that he is the one who asked the court for the dissolution of sanctuary (because he wanted her alone away from Quasi),and at the same time agreed with Gren to cause the attack on Notre Dame, so as to get her out unnoticed. Very cunning our Dom Claude...
Yes, the book is not clear on this-gives me an excuse to read it again! btw thanks again for all your wonderful clips esp. the ones from the musical, excellent!
i think in this version it was another attempt of rape. he wanted her all to himself , so he was taking her from the safety of the bell tower because he knew quasi was there. i don't think its to sneak her out in this version, the forceful way he drags her down the stairs seems to suggest that he was once again trying to rape her . i hope that answers your question a little, but in truth i'm not sure of the true answer^^
i'm sad! grrr! they completely abbandoned frollo's magistral exit from the stage... almost nothing is more unique and frolloesque than his great falling from the stone hights of Notre Dame!
I so agree!I love this film-Sir Derek Jacobi as Frollo, what more can a NDDP/SDJ fan ask for?!He does his best(that dungeon scene leaves me breathless every time I watch it),but there is not much one actor can do when the rest of the role is poorly written. I am still waiting for a production that shows THE KISS, just to mention another ommition...
ohhhh. you're right! that kisssss. and btw. i don't like the esme-phoebus scene. i mean (in the book)frollo actually saved the silly esme from the thilthy hands of phoebus, who was carelessly taking advantage of her ignorance. in this version all that phoebus says is "i'll never understand a gypsy...etc" and then frollo appears and stabs him. why? anyway phoebus' actor is fit for the role (even if too ugly), he's soo annoying.
yes, exactly, thank you for pointing that out! that scene makes no sense at all, since esme is obviously not going to go all the way and F hears all, then why the stabbing???Such a poor handling of the story! This film,as much as I love it,is a wasted opporunity IMO.Such great actors and yet the script is inept!I have to point out though, that there are 50 minutes missing so we are not seeing the complete version.
Don't get me wrong, HugosNotreDame has posted the entire DVD version, which is the same as the VHS one.Still, when it was first edited for TV,it was 50 min longer. There are moments when it seems fragmented(ie the beginning of the scene where Grin incites the attack on ND is a bit abrupt). And another thing:in the end credits there is an actor listed as Coppenhole.I don't remember any such role in the film(there is one in the book though),maybe it was cut when the film was trimmed down???
no they havn't, and no production has shown esmeraldas true identity with the amulet , which is the part that also explains why quasimodo was left at the steps of notre dame.
I always wondered about the fight scene between Derek Jacobi and Anthony Hopkins - it seems that art imitates life here, considering the fact that in many cases they were competing for the same parts...
i read somewhere a sir d.j. quote saying that anthony hopkins was looking for hollywoodian fame(that's why we all know him. he IS one of my faves too), sir derek never cared too much about fame, he loved theatre and quiet life.

Do I get that right? Esmeraldas 'husband' did convince all the poor guys to save her life and Quasi just killed and attacked them?
This is more tragic than Esmeralda would actually die. Stupid fool, he didn't earn her kiss... Phah! Now I am in a bad mood.
