do you use a projector rather than free hand, i only ask as, an artist myself i find a projector inhibtis all the pleasent changes from the initial image that can occur, also you dont really learn to paint or draw when and if your tracing imo at least.

I am fairly certain that he is either using projection or a grid to create an under-drawing. There are ways of using these photo-realist techniques that do not end up feeling "stale," or look like screen printing (check out jenny saville). I agree that projection doesn't teach you to draw but to say that it isn't "really painting" is silly. what's "really painting"?
