It's taken from their first EP called "An Ideal For Living" (released in 1978). They hadn't really found their sound yet - neither instrumentally nor vocally. Still, Warsaw is one of my all time favorites. =)
He was a big fan of Iggy Pop and other punk bands of the day. This influence shows. Later on, the band grew into their own style and Ian adopted more of a baritone style, possibly due to his admiration of Jim Morrison, but it also fit the style more. Any band sounds different at first and then later on.
because this is early work of them, back when they called themselves Warsaw. Later on, Ian started singing more baritone, what he is known for now. Both styles sound great imo.
I love Unknown Pleasures, but I wish that they did a full punk album or two before they made it. Warsaw is one of the best punk songs ever, it's such a cock tease.
Yeah like Wire did with Pink Flag. I hear you. I'm not big on Joy Division and don't agree with some of Ian's beliefs, but this song is badass I must say. My favorite from the band.
Ian Curtis' real voice is not deep as what you usually hear him sing. In the early days when Joy Division was called Warsaw and when they were a punk band, Ian sung with his real voice, but when they became Joy Division and their music changed to a post-punk sound, Ian sang with a deeper voice. You can hear his rather soft voice during an interview that is also available on YouTube somewhere. People didn't know if it was his or Barney's voice, but it was in fact Ian talking.
I'm only 16, but i was out of the womb and on to the Joy Division. Every single song i've written has been influenced by Joy Division, wondering if Ian Curtis would like it haha. They could have been huge, they've made such an impact on so many peoples lives in such a short period of time, and just to think if they were able to continue for a few more years...have to settle for New Order i suppose!
I have listened to these dudes for the last 27 years- I recall when Ian topped himself of course- being old enough- this music is so damn excellent- many memories for me every time I hear it and one never tires of them no matter how often one listens- I have found!
i remember when i started going to clubs in 1980 something, they were playing the hell out of this. and lots of old siouxie stuff too. god i'm old.......
So he tried to sue for peace and that makes you hate him? Do you believe that it was right that he should have been imprisoned for life and be banned from human contact?
And by the way what do you mean "with the Allies"? At the time the UK was the only one and had already attacked their former ally and then neutral state France murdering thousands of their non-combatant sailors.
My personal thought on Ian's assumed nazi tendency unrelated to anything said or written about it: how can something be labelled joyful in a concentration camp ? In all his lyrics there's desperation, distruction, waste to name a few.

i don't understand why everyone keeps asking if jd were nazis. aside from the name, there is absolutely NO EVIDENCE that they supported fascism, anybody who's read their lyrics would know that.
Joy division werent faschist's. Personally I think they were just facinated by the nazi's organisation and there acomplishments throughout there existance.

i', from Poland, and hitler was fighting with my country during the world wars: I and II and i know how cruel was he! millions of Polich pepole died in concentration camps and its not olny about Jewes. Maybe U saw last movie of Andrzej Wajda, which was nominated to Oscar - Katyń. Movie told about union of stalin and hitler. I know my history and i know its bloody and how dangerous nasism is. But not
Well, first of all, Hitler was just a soldrier during WWI, he wasn't a leader at that time. Second of all, there was no such country as Poland during the first war, we all know from history lessons, that Poland became independent again AFTER World War One. Don't get me wrong, just wanna get the facts straight. I do think that Hitler was one sick bastard. He wanted to eliminate all the Jews from the face of the Earth and create a master race of super-germans for goodnes sake.
my grandfather was literally within 3 feet of him with a concealed pistol, but got killed before he could shoot, this would have ended hitlers reign by almost 10 months earlier.
You can give this guy all the thumbs down you want but he is correct. During WW1 Hitler was nothing but a peon soldier and Poland was not a country. Idk what the previous argument was because I'm not going back to look but those 2 facts can't be argued......
I dont realy care about those thumbs up or down. I'm not an expert on history, but knowing things like that about my own country is a must.
