British HSTs have new engins now which is a shame but just as fast, but people do miss the screams bing the Valenta back! and They are soon to be replaced :(
Our XPT's are crap, they have seen many refurbishments etc... and honestly are past their used by date seeing they came out about 1982 and ifd the whole fleet shit itself 2morrow Countrylink has nothing but buses to back them up with says alot in how our Railways have the lack of knwoledge to plan ahead
how i agree with you on that on signaller44 which is probably why i like the sound of a Valenta on Britain's HST's but now they've been fitted with MTU Engines which unlike Valentas don't have the screem of a Turbocharger
Nah just get rid of the Valenta's from the XPT fleet and fit ALCo prime movers in them, mind you the XPT's blow enough smoke now but just imagine an ALCO donk in them, hmmmm a 44 class in discuise
@Lurch125 Loved the class 43's jet takeoff sound from the napiers on the Valenta engines but you can't have that noise forever times move on. Class 43 Valenta V12's with the huge turbocharger were replaced with German MTU V16 engines which have 8 turbo's (one turbo for every 2 cylinders).
1982 is not old! we use trains from 1976 which are our HST's and theyve been refurbished a few times, some freight locomotives like the class 37 which were built in 1960 ish
What was amazing was I didnt know they had ripped up the line on the other side the fence. I use to catch the Comet from there. Have not been back to Orange for over a decade. Thanks for sharing.
They could never decide what colours the XPT really should be, I have somewhere on video tape, the XPT in its original colours of red and white with chrome from 1991, I must dig it out and add it to my collection of XPT vids.
the XPTs are very similar to HSTs. they even have the same screaming valenta engines although downrated by 2000 horsepower. but apart from that in essence they are HSTs. although they made their own rolling stock go with them rather than Mk3s. in january im going on one from brisbane to sydney, cant wait.
XPTs are the best.

@signaller44 Same goes about them C sets! Cityrail announces it will be off the rail at the end of 2010.
I dont understand why they would spend money on designing a new Hunter car when that could of been on redesigned XPT.

@signaller44 Even on the waratah train they invested on that could of gone for new xpt loco.

Well that might have a Valenta but the HST has a Paxman wich is more powerfull and screams out of a station.

The rear engine was doing all the work, it would appear, the driver can alternate between front and rear as needed
