McCain used to be substantially different from Bush. In 2000, Bush's smear machine trounced him in the SC primaries, ending his political ambition to get the republican nomination. He was really pissed at the time at how dirty he'd been treated. Then he sold out during Bush's term by backing him, voting with him 90% of the time, and most importantly by hiring STEVE SCHMIDT, a Karl Rove protege, to run his own dirty campaign against Obama in 2008.

Once in the 80s after the S&L fiasco (that McCain should've gone to jail for along with Keating), and then again in the late 90s when Wall-Street lobbied for it (including Phill Gramm and McCain, among others).
