@brianCIM Sorry but we cannot forgive your impertinence words. These both pianists are much mor better than your experiments to try to play Chopin. We think Alkan and Fast Wller became good friends If they knew each other. Most of todays universitary pianists are people without impression and real knowing how to play
@broadwood1830 Next time the BBC contacts you asking you to share your thoughts on the history of pianism based solely on the knowledge displayed on your youtube comments and performances call me. Until then please shut up and let your playing do the talking. Preferably in real concert attire next time. Arrogant prick.
On "Thou Swell" Fats is on organ and James P. on piano. On "Chicago Blues" (?) they play a sweet little duet chorus that musically is just riffing but somehow makes you understand where the expression "playing" the piano came from. (Sorry, this is from memory).
O. G. Killin' floor. Yowzaa. Thank you for the node, James P. n' Fatty blowin' hard. Amazing! Wonder if Bud heard this when it first aired/came out...
This is simply one of the greatest and most intensly inspired moments I've heard with Fats Waller allthough they are many... Didn't know this existed. Thanks!
Actually, they did several recordings together in 1929 with James P. orchestra. But this one is really rare and is from a radio broadcast. I don't think many others are existing...
They also did one duet piano roll, QRS #3818 of a JPJ tune, called ,"If I could be with you one hour tonight". QRS still sells copies of this roll performance, and I think there's a recording of it on YouTube somewhere. It's obviously rehearsed and refined for the roll(not improv), but you can definetely discern their different tricks.
Thanks very much for sharing this recording. It's a real treasure. I have a huge collection of Fats' recordings, but this one had escaped me. And to hear him play a duet with James P. Johnson ... that's just magic. Thanks again.

It is night time where I am. Am I dreaming or did I really just hear this? If I'm dreaming, I want to stay asleep forever to hear this again.

The two geniuses at work together. Check out the dynamics. Fat's singing is a conversation. They never get into each other's way!

0 dislikes - possibly the only video on youtube which can boast that. And rightly so.

this is either the music of angels or devils, for music this exciting has to be the product of some sort of devine intervention.
If it be angels then take thee lord....
If it be devils then I am ready for the firey pits...
the heat don't sound so bad if this is the soundtrack.

How could I not have heard this after about 32 years of listening to Fats and James P.?
You can still hear the reverence from Thomas to James.
