This is a beautiful piece of machinery, and I feel privileged to see it in action. I'm glad people restore and maintain these older machines. But why are some of the comments saying things like i'd like to see your new diesel tractor do that?
Sounds like someone put some real TLC into that valve gear, that timing is near perfect.
I earned my first coal shovel blisters at 13, on one very much like that, at the elbow of a man the same age as the engine, who had started on that same engine at the age of 5. Good to see the "religion" still going strong.
the clutch could fail? these things can drag like 20 tons up a 10% incline? or something ridiculous like that. I wouldnt coun't on anything failing while its driving itself up that hill. and those old steam engines have already lasted longer than ANY vehicle today will, and will probably still be around longer than todays disposable vehicles.
We put a chain around the flywheel spoke and clutch spoke to prevent any clutch failure. It's really no big deal. The engine and steam do the work. It was 35 degrees that day and the steam looked worse than it would have on a hot day.
Good chance judgment going on incline with good clutch shoes otherwise clutch could failed to rollback. It happened like the one on incline hill accident and personal death last week in Indiana show ground. A plow pin would be advantage.
My dad still owns two of my great grandfather's steam engines - a Case and an Avery. We used to go to thresher shows across Kansas with Dad and the big tractors. The sound of the whistle brought back great memories of my childhood! Thanks for sharing! - A Yoder from Yoder
If the price of gas keeps going up we may see people go back to farming with steam, much more beautiful then any new tractor, thanks alot for saving some history!
Ive heard rumors that in poland, they are switching back to steam locomotives on some lines! I know its not the same like a traction engine, but its still steam, and steam is wonderful :)
It's not a rumor.. they still run steam because they cannot afford new engines.. some of the old engines have been running for 60+ years. I'd like to see any modern deisel engine do that.
My Caseman "Old Gift Shop" is now open on my site. There are tractor hats ,steins, shirts, calendars, and a lot of other tractor related gifts. You don't have to be a member to buy just go on my web site and find the board "Old Gift Shop" . Thanks
I have a Antique Tractor Forum Site and would like to have you as a member.
We have members all over the world with lots of pictures and stories. We are always looking for new members. We have a board for farm animals horses, mules, goats, etc. We also have a board for modern tractors and machinery.
There was a man who brought his steam tractor to our Historic Farm Days Show in Penfield Illinois last July and he ran that thing down the track after the tractor pulling was done. He shoveled two bushel of wet sawdust in the firebox and you should have seen the shower of sparks! He was driving into a slight wind and the sparks flew back over the cab to make it look like he was going 100 MPH down the track. What a sight.
I like the sound of it

Does this have a feed water pump? How does the clutch on this steam tractor work? Nice and powerful tractor.
Thanks
edisonphonographs 2 years ago
brilliantly enough, there is no clutch! no need, just control the flow of the steam. starts itself.
eatpogs 2 years ago
Oh, I thought that this engine could be disconnected from the wheels to become a stationary engine.
Thanks
edisonphonographs 2 years ago
Steamers have a clutch, but no Breaks.
ejcantrell 2 years ago
i think the clutch system is the same kind on a john deer A i don't know for sure
GundamKnight07 2 years ago
Yes, these do have a feed water pump and the clutch consists of two shoes that either engage or disengage on the inside of the flywheel.
