  • Lord...the chair. Love it!

  • Love that song so much -- so, so captivating to the point of enchanting -- "sigh no more....."

  • Ha! His confusion with the chair...

  • I would've taken the prince.

  • awww poor him, Beatrice doesnt want to marry him :(

  • "and then there was a star danced. And under that was I born"

    *love!*

  • @ratmaaan really!? that's interesting - anyone who knows more about this theory!? mother of fools - any shakespearian theorists online??

  • oh the prince and monsiure lurrve! XD when did we stop talking like this lol srsly!

  • His grace hath made the match, and all grace say amen to it! - I love that line, and also: "I were but little happy if I could say how much!"

  • aaaahh they're annoying me I don't like these two hero and that freakin guy!!! go back to beatrice and benedict!!

  • Emma Thompson is awesome.....and very very hot

  • Keanu Reeves, you are wildly attractive. But you failed epically in the movie.

  • Thanks for uploading! Its been years since I saw this`1

  • Benedick has always been and will always be, my favorite character from this. xD

  • I love this film - well done Shakespeare-what a guy! :-)

  • @Nimue1974 But did Shakespeare really write them? Or was it someone else ;)

  • @bob37898 dont tell me you've heard about a theory that shakespear was only a pen name and he did not actually exsist?

  • @MusicLovinTomboi Had to do a friggin project on it. Waste of time.

  • @bob37898 XD we had a homework mini booklet thing based around it

  • Wow. He is hopeless with that chair. xD

  • he's basically very naive

  • is that really kate beckinsale?

  • kenneth branagh did many shakespeare adaptations in those years. OTELLO, HAMLET, LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST. and there was Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in which De Niro made what Anthony Hopkins made in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. -some are underappreciated films indeed-

  • is there a part 5?

  • is it not strange that sheep's guts should hail souls out of mens body's?

    lol

i love kenneth in this film, he does such a good job

  • Not as much as you'd think.

The Italian city-state of Florence was actually ruled by a black man in the early 16th century. His name was Cosimo d' Medici.

  • @Shild really! he was black?? That is way cool and very unexpected! How was that??

  • good soundtrack

  • Yeah, Patrick Doyle did the music. He did the music for some of the Harry Potter movies too. :)

  • he also did the music for sense and sensibility

  • I agree, Don John isn't exactly the best choice. I do like who they chose for Don Pedro though...I thought it was interesting how they chose an african american actor, when in this time period there was a lot of racism.

I also think the actress and actor that plays Beatrice and Benadick are perfect! :)

  • Is the guy who plays Benedick the same guy who plays Lockheart in Harry Potter? Or is that Claudio?

  • Lockhart in Harry Potter.

  • Yes, Kenneth Branagh played both Benedick and Gilderoy Lockheart, and in my opinion he was perfect for both!

  • yup its the guy who plays Benedick

  • speed the matrix, all perfectly fine main roles requiring no major acting talent. all I'm saying is maybe we keep him away from the shakespere...

  • Monsieur l'oeuf? Mister egg? Or monsieur l'oevre? What?

  • It says "Monsieur Love" in the original text, Benedick just says it with a kind of french inflection.

  • Merci bien. It's nice to be replied to by a teuton (in the pre-German sense).

  • he says monsieur love..

a bit of mockery there as he is strongly against love and marriage :)

  • Merci, monsieur sanity!

  • lol, I love how everytime don john (reeves) appears there's dramatic organ music.

like, oh no bad acting approaches!

  • Damn that's funny!!!!!!!!

  • It's so true.

I love this movie, but Keanu Reeves is horrible as Don John

  • I am just relieved that they didn't cast him as a protagonist, that would have been worse. I feel comfortably with him as Don John.

  • I am tryin to think back, was there ever a role in which he fit well? That radio station Dixie film, he didn't fit. But I think he fit well in Bill & Ted, and maybe that "dad" film with Fred Ward. "Speed" was not such a bad fit, either.

  • @thrulookingglass he is prettty!!! lol

  • @thrulookingglass jajajja, you made my day hahhahaha

  • this play is quite hard to watch for a foreigner...

the way they speak is not common nowadays

  • haha, that chair...

  • ill have you denzel

  • Ive dissected this text as deeply as I could and I need help-were Beatrice and Benedick envolved previously, or was beatrice in love with him or what? Im not seeing my director for several days, so help!!

  • Im doing this play also and its hard to say for certain, the way Beatrice speaks sarcastically and some of the things she says indicates they have known each other previously. it is possible they loved each other but ido not think Beatrice loved alone.

  • I would appear so. In Act 2, Scene 2 Beatrice says:

Indeed, my lord, he lent it me awhile, and I gave him use for

it, a double heart for his single one. Marry, once before he won it of me with false dice. Therefore your Grace may well say I have lost it.

This would imply that they both love one another but something went wrong. Who knows? With these two, anything could have happened!

  • Benedict is the best!!! :)

  • lol everyone got naked

  • "Hah. The prince, and Monsieur Lurve!"

    Lols at you!

  • I adoooore Ken sayin' word "oyster" xD xD xD it's so funny!

  • I love this movie, and the romeo and Juliet. I didn't know this movie was made until we had to watch it in my literature class in collage

  • when wasthe movie published??

  • i think in 1995...., i think..., i'm not sure...

  • hahahahah!!!!!!! :D

btw: it's Kate BeckinSALE not dale...i made that mistake too

  • wait were beatrice and benedick a couple once???

  • no they never were a couple.

  • they were

  • I think that they were in love, at least she loved him but I don't think that they were a couple.

And I wouldn't interpretate Don Pedro's words in that way...

  • It's pretty clear there's some history... all that stuff about how he lent her his heart, and she gave him a double heart for his single one, etc.

I think the precise nature of their history is open to interpretation.

  • Poor Don Pedro... he go re-jec-ted!

  • their parts were given to bad actors and thus became umimportant

  • hahahahahha, sorry, that just made me laugh

  • actually it is don john.

  • yeah, but then theres keanu reeves

  • This play is like the ultimate rom-com. XD

  • is this the soliliquy when benedick changes his opinion on love

  • Emma Thompson. Brilliant.

  • If you listen th what Benedick says between 7:43 and 8:25, I'm sure that everyone will agree with me in thinking that he sets his standards for women way too high.

  • What exactly is John(KeanuReeves) plotting?

  • Don Pedro is totally taken in by Beatrice (starting 3:28). Although when I first read the play, I did not interpret it that way.

  • haha.....benedick and that chair....lol

  • Depends on what everyone else in your cast is wearing...interesting that you're playing Benedick...and as an additional costume note- invest in some ACE bandages!!!!

  • yes! I remember, there was this girl in my drama class who had to play a guy, but she was a size C.

We had to use a LOT of duct tape on her. Xd

  • Duct tape?! Owie....... XD

  • lol, we she had an undershirt on, and we strappd THAT down.

I can't imagine the pain if we applied duct tape directly onto her breasts...i shiver thinking about it.

  • Keanu Reeves is such a shmuck.

  • what is keanu reeve's character's name?

  • John the Bastard...fits don't it?

  • keanu reeves as john the bastard and tom cruise as don pedro would look cool ^^

  • don john

  • I wish I could play Beatrice! yeah man Claudio I want to hurl him into the gallows!

  • i played Borachio in my class

  • I think the Prince loved Beatrice and thus assured her happiness with her most compatible partner Benedick.

  • This is indeed very possible. It is of course bizarre that the prince is the only one left single in the end of the play.

I really enjoyed D.W. as the Prince!

  • In my class last year i played Claudio

  • I'm in love with beatrice.

  • i love it when Benedick keeps trying to fix his chair! :0) and then falls....

  • Claudio's such a dork.

  • lol!!! Benedick could open da chair!!!

    ROLF!

  • the bit when pedro and leonato are talking to claudio, he doesnt look like he's listening to a word! kate was so good as hero!

  • D: I love this movie/play, especially this scene with Benedick mocking Claudio for falling in love - and then promptly falling for Beatrice minutes later. xD Oh the irony.

  • Kenneth was absolutely PERFECT for his role as Benedick!

  • i love benidicks speech about what he want in a woman, its to funny!

  • ghah, the prince and Monsieur LOVEEEEE.

    SO FUNNY

  • Denzel Washington did an excellent Prince, and even more gentle and noble than the play original. It's a real pitty that he's the one that remains alone at the very end.

This is one of my favourite Shakespeare adaptations, God bless Branagh and the rest of crew for this work!

  • I agree with you five thousand percent on everything you say. Denzel's Don Pedro stands out from all the others because, unlike the others, he never resorts to being an absolute boob at any point. Which is not to say he can't be comedic and hammy when he needs to be! His proposal to Beatrice is just so moving. I love everything about this movie, but I especially admire his performance.

  • I love his proposal! I would've accepted him!! :)

  • I absolutely LOVE and ADORE the Benedick's monologue...

  • Um. Is that Denzel Washington

  • Yep, it is!

  • the question was total rubbish huh?

i had no idea wat to write..

but i got thru it with time at the end for a nap lol :)

  • ha ha ha noooooooooo!

  • Oh! I think that the prince did love Beatrice dear! ^_^ they would have been cute, if not for Benedick.

  • 8.35 > 8.39, love the wide shot lol

  • big deal

  • lol, I'm doing the speech from 6:00 onwards by Bennedict for my drama school audition speech :P

  • Good choice.

  • How can she turn down the Prince, he's wonderful!

  • The tradition back then was for the lord to woo the lady and then give him to his man. The Prince isn't going for Hero...

  • Benedict looks ridiculous when after he says "i will hide me" he picks up his chair and scurries around bushes... i laughed out loud

  • shakespeare= GENIUS! i love this play..!

  • LOL the way he says mosieur love is so funny at 8:29

  • lol, she just turns down the prince!!!

  • LOL. We're doing this play at my school and the guy who plays the prince was like "Dang, I feel so rejected." XD

  • Claudio is a freaking drama queen!

  • Agree about Claudio! Claudio is just scary - just so dramatic, and stalkerlike and psychotic about his feelings for Hero... not much selfesteem there is all I'm sayin'... a real man doens't go around thinking this or that just without talking to her! He is the precise defination of a guy who looks shy and drling - but ends up cutting your face and raping you because he thinks you looked at another man.

  • very very true!

why does he do that it seems so out of his nature?

  • he thought that Hero cheated him.

  • i guess that could turn some guys into raving lunatics

i mean think about this chick says "i'm totally pure for you!" then one of your friends seduces her...

i guess he kinda does have a reason

  • i don't think Claudio was supposed to be forceful but more like a "deer-in-the-headlights" kinda guy; really shy and honest

  • hahahaha she just turned down the Prince!!!

  • Emma Tompson was Sybil Trelawney in HP films and Kenneth Brannagh was Gilderoy Lockhart and Hero's uncle was King Richard the 4rth in the Black Adder. Imelda Standon (I don't spell the name correctly, I know) was Professor Umbridge in HP and the GoF, and Hero (I don't remember the real name...)was playing in Underworld I and II.

  • yeah but who are they all in THIS film??

  • Good grief! Okay, here's the breakdown: Emma Thompson: Beatrice Kenneth Brannagh: Benedick (was married to Thompson in this film) Brian Blessed: Antonio Imelda Stauton: Margaret Kate Beckinsale: Hero Denzel Washington: Don Pedro Keanu Reeves: Don John Robert Sean Leonard: Claudio Michael Keaton: Dogberry Richard Briers: Leonato Does this help now??????
  • lol, "Civil (Seville) as an orange". I love Shakespeare's puns.

  • hehe benedick makes me laugh at this part....he cant work a deckchair can he!

    great film

  • Keanu Reeves doing Shakespeare is one of the silliest things I've ever seen.

  • the acting in this is superb, beatrice is so strong and claudio melts my heart when he is talking to hero.

  • "If they were but a week married, they would talk themselves mad." :P

  • This has got to be one of my favorite movies!!! Thank you for posting. I've been lookin for this vid for a long time.

  • omg thhis video is like so totally awesome!!! and i want to be Hero so i can kiss Claudio man i totally nv hero b/c he is so hot, sexy, and spicy.

  • Lmfao at Benedick and his chair xD

  • Am I the only person who wants this song?

Then sigh not so, but let them go...

  • Branagh is hilarious and awesome in that soliloquy

  • Hero is just right. Beatrice is perfect.Emma Thompson is a wonderful actress. I think Reeves is miscast but what do I know. Too bad they didn't just do British actors but I suppose Branagh was trying to gain international appeal.

    Shakespeare is always wonderful.

  • branagh makes me laugh!!!!

  • This is bloody brilliant. Cheers for the posting.

  • The Count needs to calm down and not be a jealous bastard

  • Yeah, haha. Sometimes in this film I think Kenneth Branagh probably has to calm down too. He seems to be screaming his head off some times, he looks positively mad and not like the Benedick in the play.

  • I think Branagh is just PERFECT

  • LOL me too when I looked at Don John! But for his brother have I my eyes for! Ah Don Pedro pick me!

  • Denzel is one of the all time greats.

  • That song was SOOO top ten way back when.

  • pmsl Beatrice rejects Pedro :p stinkk dont worri Pedro im sure Leonato will have you :p lozl

  • lmao the prince n misure LURVVVVEEEE

  • lovin the film not loving the fact it is being used for my SATs D= oh well atleast we get a chuckel out of it =D
